Chapter 11 - The Door Between Them.

The discovery did not make Gabriel kinder.
It made him quieter.
For two hours he sat alone in his study with the original company agreement on the desk.
Twenty percent.
The number bothered him more than the money.
It meant the official story of Vale Meridian had been false since before Gabriel was old enough to read it.
Thomas Avery had not merely worked for Richard Vale.
He had helped build the company.
At 8:10 that evening, Chloe knocked on the study door.
Gabriel did not answer immediately.
She opened it halfway.
"Helen said you hadn't eaten."
"Helen worries professionally."
"She sent a sandwich."
Chloe placed a plate on the side table.
Gabriel looked at her bandaged wrist.
"You should be resting."
"You keep saying that."
"You keep ignoring it."
She turned to leave.
"Chloe."
She stopped.
Gabriel looked at the contract.
"Why didn't you show me this earlier?"
"I found it in my mother's box."
"That is not an answer."
"Because I didn't know if it was real."
"You could have asked."
"I was a maid in your house."
"You keep saying that like it prevented speech."
Chloe looked at him.
"Lauren poured tea on me because she thought I stood too close to her chair."
The room went silent.
"Do you really think I believed I could walk into your study on my second day and accuse your father of stealing a company from mine?"
Gabriel looked away.
She continued.
"I came here for documents, not for you."
The sentence landed strangely.
Gabriel lifted his eyes again.
"I know."
"Do you?"
"Yes."
"Because everyone else is going to say something different."
"What?"
"That I got close to you on purpose."
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"We are not close."
Chloe almost smiled.
"Exactly."
He understood then why the sentence had bothered him.
He did not examine the feeling further.
His phone rang.
Amelia Ross was calling from the board.
Gabriel answered.
"What happened?"
"You need to turn on Channel Seven."
He looked at the television mounted above the fireplace.
A financial news panel was discussing Vale Meridian.
A photograph of Chloe appeared beside a headline.
SECRET HEIRESS INFILTRATED CEO'S HOME BEFORE BOARD CRISIS.
Chloe's face drained of color.
The anchor continued.
"Sources close to the Whitmore family allege that Chloe Avery, daughter of a disgraced former Vale Meridian executive, obtained employment inside Gabriel Vale's private residence using another surname."
Gabriel muted the television.
"Lauren."
Chloe stared at the screen.
"Or Evelyn."
Amelia's voice came through the phone.
"There's more."
"Of course."
"A video was released."
Gabriel unmuted the television.
Security footage showed Chloe entering the archive wing at 1:53 a.m.
The clip cut to Gabriel and Chloe standing close together in the pantry.
Then it cut to Gabriel throwing the black titanium ring onto the dining room table.
The sequence made it look as though Chloe had searched private records, confronted Gabriel with something, and caused the engagement to collapse.
It omitted Lauren spilling the tea.
It omitted the threat.
It omitted everything that gave the moments meaning.
The anchor said the word manipulation three times in less than a minute.
Chloe sat down.
"They edited it."
Gabriel's voice was cold.
"Yes."
"People will believe it."
"Some will."
"My name is everywhere."
"We'll respond."
Chloe looked at him.
"With what?"
"The truth."
She laughed once, bitterly.
"Your mother said truth was expensive."
"Evelyn said that."
"Either way, she was right."
Gabriel ended the call with Amelia.
His phone immediately filled with messages from board members, reporters, business partners, and people he had not spoken to in years.
Chloe's phone began doing the same.
She shut it off.
"I should leave."
Gabriel looked at her.
"No."
"If I stay, they will say I'm hiding here because we're working together."
"We are working together."
"On evidence."
"Yes."
"They'll call it something else."
Gabriel stood.
"Let them."
"You can afford that attitude."
"Meaning?"
"If this goes badly, you lose a title."
Chloe's eyes flashed.
"I lose the only name my father has left."
Gabriel went still.
She regretted saying it as soon as it left her mouth.
"That's not fair."
"No."
Gabriel's voice softened.
"It isn't."
He looked at the television again.
"Which is why you are not leaving because Lauren's publicist wants you isolated."
A notification appeared on Gabriel's laptop.
An email had arrived from Marcus's private address.
Subject: IF YOU WANT THE ORIGINAL DINING ROOM FOOTAGE.
Gabriel opened it.
There was only one sentence.
COME TO THE WESTBRIDGE GALA TOMORROW NIGHT AND BRING THE NORTH HARBOR LEDGER.
Chloe read over his shoulder.
"It's a trap."
Gabriel nodded.
"Obviously."
"You're not going."
He closed the laptop.
May you like
"Obviously I am."
