Chapter 17 - The Building They Abandoned.

Vale Meridian's original headquarters stood beside an old freight yard in Queens, surrounded by chain-link fencing and redevelopment signs.
The brick building had been empty for almost eight years.
Its windows were boarded on the lower floors.
A faded metal sign above the loading entrance still showed the first version of the Vale Meridian logo.
Gabriel had not been there since his father took him to a company picnic when he was ten.
He remembered balloons in the parking lot.
He remembered Thomas Avery only as a name he had learned that week.
Now he arrived behind two unmarked police vehicles with Chloe, Collins, and a detective from Greenwich.
Nobody allowed Chloe to go inside first.
She did not argue.
Lauren's note had been enough to prove that courage and recklessness were not the same thing.
Police entered through the loading entrance.
Five minutes later, an officer returned.
"We have two people inside."
Gabriel's stomach tightened.
"Lauren?"
"Yes."
"Marcus?"
"Yes."
"Are they safe?"
The officer hesitated.
"They're talking."
A detective handed Gabriel an earpiece connected to a directional microphone.
"We want this to stay a conversation."
Gabriel nodded.
Inside the building, Lauren and Marcus stood in the old executive conference room.
Dust covered the long wooden table.
Marcus held a laptop bag.
Lauren stood near the far wall with her hands visible.
Her voice came through the earpiece.
"You said your father made sure Thomas couldn't testify."
Marcus answered.
"I told you too much."
"Not enough."
"Lauren, give me the drive."
"No."
"You don't understand what's on it."
"I understand my entire life was used as a legal strategy."
Marcus sighed.
"You enjoyed the strategy when it benefited you."
Lauren flinched.
"I was awful to Chloe."
"You were useful."
The cruelty of the sentence silenced even Lauren.
Gabriel looked at Chloe.
Her face remained still.
Marcus continued.
"You think apologizing changes anything?"
"No."
Lauren's answer surprised Gabriel.
"But I'm done helping you."
"Then you'll lose everything."
Lauren laughed bitterly.
"I already lost the wedding."
"This is bigger than a wedding."
"That's what everybody keeps saying."
She stepped closer to the old table.
"Tell me who told Robert Dean to follow Thomas Avery."
Marcus went quiet.
Lauren did not move.
"Was it my mother?"
"No."
Chloe's fingers tightened around the edge of the patrol car door.
Lauren asked again.
"Was it Margaret Vale?"
"No."
Gabriel's heart began pounding.
There was only one obvious name left.
Lauren whispered it.
"Richard Vale."
Marcus exhaled.
"Yes."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
Chloe looked at him, but there was no triumph in her face.
Only sympathy he did not want and could not reject.
Inside, Lauren sounded shaken.
"Gabriel's father ordered Thomas killed?"
"No."
Marcus's voice sharpened.
"Stop turning every ugly fact into the ugliest possible version."
"Then tell me the version you prefer."
"Richard ordered my father to recover the duplicate ledger before Thomas reached federal investigators."
"How?"
"He told Robert to stop the car and scare him into surrendering it."
"And the crash?"
A long pause followed.
"Robert forced him off the road."
Chloe covered her mouth.
Gabriel stared at the abandoned building.
Marcus continued.
"Thomas lost control."
Lauren's voice became quiet.
"Did Richard know?"
"Not at first."
"And when he found out?"
"He paid for the cover story."
Gabriel felt something inside him break cleanly rather than gradually.
His father had not caused the theft.
He had done something worse in a different way.
He had chosen the company over a dead man.
Lauren asked the question Chloe could not.
"What happened to the ledger?"
"Margaret got it before Robert did."
"How?"
"Thomas mailed part of it to her before the meeting."
"So Margaret knew Richard covered up the crash."
"Eventually."
"Why didn't she expose him?"
"Because Richard agreed to restore Avery's ownership through North Harbor."
Marcus sounded almost amused.
"That was their compromise."
Chloe whispered.
"My father's name for shares."
Gabriel heard her.
"No."
"That's what they did."
"I know."
His voice cracked for the first time.
"I mean no, it wasn't enough."
Inside, Lauren moved.
"Where is the final transfer document?"
Marcus replied.
"Give me the drive first."
"No."
"Then we are done."
Footsteps sounded.
The detective lifted a hand.
Officers moved toward the entrance.
Lauren raised her voice.
"I uploaded everything before you got here."
Marcus stopped.
"To who?"
"Gabriel."
Outside, Gabriel's phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from Lauren.
Attached were fourteen files.
Marcus must have heard her phone send confirmation because his composure disappeared.
"You stupid girl."
Lauren stepped backward.
"There he is."
Her voice shook, but she did not retreat farther.
"That's the man my mother kept telling me was protecting us."
Police entered the room.
Marcus did not resist.
He looked almost relieved when they took the laptop bag from his hand.
A detective told him he was being detained in connection with evidence tampering and the warehouse fire investigation.
Lauren walked outside several minutes later.
She saw Chloe first.
Neither woman spoke.
Lauren looked at the bandage on Chloe's wrist.
Then she lowered her eyes.
"I can't undo it."
Chloe answered quietly.
"No."
"I was cruel to you before I knew any of this."
"Yes."
"So I don't get to blame Marcus for that."
"No."
Lauren swallowed.
"I'm sorry."
Chloe studied her.
"I believe you're sorry now."
Lauren looked up hopefully.
Chloe continued.
"That isn't the same as forgiveness."
Lauren nodded.
"I know."
Gabriel approached.
Lauren looked at him but did not ask for the ring.
Instead, she handed him an old brass key.
"Marcus had this in his bag."
"What does it open?"
Lauren pointed toward the second floor of the abandoned headquarters.
"Your father's office."
Gabriel stared up at the dark windows.
"That office was emptied years ago."
Lauren shook her head.
May you like
"Not the wall safe."
