Chapter 7 - The Ledger.

The key opened a safe-deposit box at a private bank twelve miles from the Vale estate.

Gabriel knew because Margaret had written the bank's old address on the reverse side of the tag.

He remembered going there with her once as a child.

She had bought him hot chocolate afterward because he had complained the lobby smelled like dust.

By two that afternoon, Gabriel and Chloe were sitting in a quiet conference room beneath the bank with Calvin Collins outside the door.

Gabriel had wanted Chloe to remain at the estate.

Chloe had refused.

"If the box contains information about my father, I'm going."

"You are technically still my employee."

"You told me not to work today."

He had stared at her for a moment.

"You argue more when you're injured."

"I have one good arm and a lot of questions."

He had almost smiled then.

Almost.

The safe-deposit box was long, narrow, and heavier than expected.

A bank officer placed it on the table and left them alone.

Gabriel inserted the key.

Inside were two leather-bound ledgers, a sealed cassette tape, three notarized envelopes, and a photograph of Margaret Vale with Thomas Avery.

Chloe touched the edge of the photograph but did not pick it up.

Her father looked younger than she remembered him.

He was laughing.

Gabriel had never seen the image before.

"They were friends."

Chloe nodded.

"Maybe that was why my father trusted her."

Gabriel opened the first ledger.

Rows of company names and payments filled the pages.

Some entries dated back twenty-three years.

Vale Meridian appeared repeatedly beside shell vendors.

Whitmore Holdings appeared beside consulting payments.

Dean Legal Services appeared beside restructuring fees.

North Harbor Trust appeared every few pages.

Gabriel turned faster.

"This isn't a household record."

"It's corporate."

"My mother had no operational role at Vale Meridian."

"Maybe officially."

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

"You don't know her."

"Neither do I."

Chloe gestured at the ledger.

"But somebody thought she needed this."

The second ledger was different.

It contained ownership percentages.

Several pages had been crossed out and rewritten.

At the top of one page, Margaret had written NORTH HARBOR - BENEFICIAL INTEREST.

Below it were three names.

MARGARET VALE - TRUSTEE.

THOMAS AVERY - PROTECTED PARTY.

CHLOE AVERY - CONTINGENT BENEFICIARY.

Chloe stopped breathing.

Gabriel read it again.

"Your legal name is Chloe Avery?"

"It was when I was born."

"Contingent beneficiary of what?"

"I don't know."

Gabriel turned the page.

A percentage was written in red ink.

18.5%.

He stared at it.

"This cannot be eighteen and a half percent of Vale Meridian."

Chloe looked frightened rather than excited.

"Why not?"

"Because that would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars."

She leaned back.

"Then it definitely isn't mine."

Gabriel flipped to the legal notes.

The phrase VOTING SHARES appeared beside North Harbor.

Another line referenced a deferred transfer upon verification of fiduciary breach.

Gabriel felt a headache begin behind his eyes.

"This is why Marcus drafted the engagement clause."

"How?"

"If North Harbor owns voting shares, those shares can change control of the company."

Chloe looked at the name again.

"And Lauren's family knew."

"Maybe."

"Her mother definitely knew."

Gabriel opened the first notarized envelope.

It was addressed to him.

He recognized his mother's handwriting.

My son,

If you are reading this, then I failed to resolve what your father and I allowed to grow around us.

Do not assume Richard was innocent because he loved you.

Do not assume Thomas was guilty because he was poor enough to be blamed.

And do not assume I was brave because I hid evidence instead of exposing it.

Gabriel stopped.

Chloe watched his face.

"You don't have to read it out loud."

"Yes, I do."

He continued.

North Harbor was created to protect assets that should never have been controlled by the people who took them.

Thomas discovered the diversion first.

Richard discovered it later.

By then, Evelyn Whitmore and Robert Dean had enough leverage to destroy the company and send innocent employees down with them.

Your father chose containment.

I chose a contingency.

Thomas chose truth.

We all paid for those choices.

Gabriel lowered the letter.

"My father knew."

Chloe said nothing.

He looked down at the ledgers again.

For years he had built his identity around the belief that Richard Vale had been demanding but honorable.

Now his mother was telling him his father had chosen silence.

The second notarized envelope was addressed to Chloe Avery.

Chloe stared at it.

Her fingers did not move.

"Open it."

Gabriel's voice was quiet.

"I'm scared to."

"So am I."

She looked at him.

It was the first time he admitted fear.

Chloe broke the seal.

Inside was a one-page statement from Margaret.

Chloe,

Your father did not steal from Vale Meridian.

He was framed using accounts created in his name.

If you ever find this, know that I tried to preserve enough evidence to clear him.

The beneficiary interest in North Harbor exists because part of the ownership assigned to my husband was purchased using funds Thomas helped recover and was never properly credited.

Your claim is real.

Chloe covered her mouth.

Tears appeared before she could stop them.

Gabriel looked away to give her privacy.

The third envelope was labeled FOR MARCUS DEAN ONLY AFTER DISCLOSURE.

Gabriel stared at it.

"That's interesting."

Chloe wiped her eyes.

"Open it."

"It's addressed to Marcus."

"Your mother also said not to trust his father."

Gabriel opened it.

There was no letter inside.

Only a photocopy of a signed bank transfer.

The recipient was Robert Dean.

The sender was Evelyn Whitmore.

The amount was five million dollars.

The date was three weeks after Thomas Avery had been forced out of Vale Meridian.

At the bottom, Margaret had written one sentence.

IF ROBERT'S SON EVER BECOMES YOUR LAWYER, FIND OUT WHICH SIDE HE CHOSE.

Gabriel's phone buzzed.

A message from Marcus appeared.

BOARD MEETING MOVED TO 4 P.M.

EMERGENCY VOTE ON YOUR AUTHORITY.

Gabriel looked at the clock.

It was 2:37.

Then another message arrived.
