Chapter 15 - The Fire in Warehouse Nine.

The password to Richard Vale's encrypted file was not found in any corporate record.

Gabriel tried birthdays, anniversaries, addresses, and old employee numbers.

Nothing worked.

At 10:26 a.m., the forensic accountant suggested they stop guessing before the system locked the file permanently.

Gabriel agreed.

At 10:31, David received a message from a former coworker at Whitmore Capital.

WAREHOUSE NINE IS BEING CLEARED.

David showed it to Collins.

"What's Warehouse Nine?"

Gabriel asked.

David looked at him.

"Off-site paper storage."

"For what?"

"Old Whitmore and Vale joint venture records."

Chloe stood.

"The vendor files."

David nodded.

"Some of them."

Gabriel was already reaching for his jacket.

Collins stopped him.

"We send professionals."

"We send both."

"Mr. Vale."

"If Marcus knows we're looking at North Harbor, he knows exactly which records matter."

Collins made three calls while Gabriel and Chloe headed for the garage.

He objected to Chloe coming.

She ignored him.

"Those records may clear my father."

"They may also be in a warehouse someone wants emptied."

"Then drive faster."

Warehouse Nine sat in an industrial district along the river.

By the time they arrived, gray smoke was curling from a side loading door.

Fire crews were still four minutes away.

Collins stopped the SUV well back from the building.

"Nobody goes inside."

Gabriel looked at the smoke.

"Agreed."

Chloe looked relieved.

"Good."

"You expected me to run into a burning warehouse?"

"Today has been weird."

A security employee from the storage company ran toward them.

"The sprinkler system isn't activating."

Collins pointed.

"Stay outside and get everyone accounted for."

Sirens approached in the distance.

Through the open loading bay, Gabriel could see flames spreading across one corner of a shelving area.

It was not an inferno.

It was controlled, concentrated, and exactly where the oldest boxes were stored.

"That isn't random."

Chloe said.

Collins nodded.

"No."

Firefighters arrived and took control.

Within fifteen minutes, the fire was contained.

Nobody was injured.

A fire captain approached Gabriel afterward.

"Looks like ignition started in two separate places."

"Accidental?"

The captain's expression answered before his words did.

"We'll investigate."

Collins walked through the wet loading bay with a fire marshal and returned carrying a plastic storage tote.

"They saved this from the back room."

The label read VALE / WHITMORE - 2003-2007.

Chloe stared at it.

"That's the exact period."

They opened the tote outside.

Water had damaged some pages, but several binders were intact.

One binder contained copies of vendor contracts signed by Richard Vale.

Another contained internal audits with handwritten notes from Thomas Avery.

A third held insurance forms.

Chloe turned through them carefully.

Then she froze.

"Gabriel."

He moved beside her.

She pointed to a personnel insurance form.

Thomas Avery's name was listed as the insured executive.

The beneficiary section had been amended six months before his death.

Original beneficiary: Sarah Avery, spouse.

Amended beneficiary: North Harbor Trust.

Gabriel frowned.

"Why would my father change Thomas's insurance beneficiary?"

Chloe looked at the signature.

"He didn't."

"What?"

"That's not my father's signature."

"Are you sure?"

"I saw him sign birthday cards for eleven years."

Her voice shook.

"That's not his handwriting."

Collins leaned closer.

The witness signature belonged to Robert Dean.

Gabriel felt cold despite the heat from the building.

"Robert changed the beneficiary before Thomas died."

Chloe stared at the form.

"Then North Harbor received the insurance money."

"Which Margaret later used to support your mother."

"Or somebody did before she gained control."

A firefighter called Collins toward the loading dock.

The storage company's security camera had captured a man entering twenty minutes before the smoke appeared.

The image was grainy but clear enough to show a face.

Marcus Dean.

Gabriel stared at the still frame.

"He came himself."

Collins nodded.

"Looks that way."

Chloe's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She opened the message.

It was from Lauren.

I FOUND OUT WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT YOUR FATHER DIED.

Chloe's heart slammed against her ribs.

A second message appeared.

DON'T TELL GABRIEL.

Then a third.

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH, COME ALONE.

Gabriel watched Chloe's face.

"What happened?"

She looked at the messages.

For one terrible second, she considered doing what Lauren asked.

Then she handed Gabriel the phone.
