Chapter 9 - The Voice Nobody Expected.

Chloe held the phone tighter against her ear.

"Removed as CEO?"

Gabriel's voice came through the line beneath the low murmur of people arguing in a conference room.

"Marcus invoked an emergency governance clause."

"Can he do that?"

"Apparently he drafted one that says he can try."

Lauren watched Chloe from across the staff corridor.

The police officer stood beside her now, waiting for a formal statement about the bracelet.

Calvin Collins had already ordered the key cabinet sealed.

Gabriel continued.

"He told the board North Harbor may control disputed voting shares and that you entered my home under a false identity to manipulate me into recognizing your claim."

Chloe closed her eyes.

"I never asked you for a share of anything."

"I know."

The certainty in his voice steadied her.

"But they don't."

"What do you need?"

"Anything proving Lauren knew about North Harbor before today."

Chloe looked at Lauren.

"She just said the name in front of two police officers and half the staff."

Gabriel went silent for a beat.

"She did what?"

Chloe almost laughed from disbelief.

"She got angry."

"Put Collins on."

Chloe handed him the phone.

While Collins spoke to Gabriel, Helen pulled Chloe aside.

"There's something I should have given him earlier."

Chloe looked at her.

"What?"

Helen's face tightened with guilt.

"A recording."

"Of Lauren?"

"Maybe."

They went into the laundry office and closed the door.

Helen opened a drawer and removed an old smartphone with a cracked corner.

"David gave me this after Lauren started pressuring me about his job."

"Your son?"

"He told me to record anything that sounded like a threat."

Helen unlocked the phone.

"I never thought I would actually use it."

She opened an audio file dated four days earlier.

Lauren's voice filled the small room.

"I don't care how you do it, Helen."

A chair scraped in the background.

"If Chloe keeps wandering near the archive wing, get rid of her."

Helen's recorded voice answered.

"She hasn't done anything wrong."

"Then give her a reason to leave."

"I won't frame an employee."

Lauren laughed.

"Everyone has a price."

Helen's voice became sharper.

"Not this."

Then Lauren said something that made Chloe stop breathing.

"My mother did not spend twenty years cleaning up the Avery problem just so some maid could open the wrong box before the wedding."

The recording continued.

"And if Gabriel finds North Harbor before the marriage is final, Marcus says the whole structure can collapse."

Helen paused the audio.

Chloe stared at her.

"You had this for four days."

"I was afraid."

"Gabriel could have known."

"I know."

"My father's name was in her mouth four days ago."

"I know."

Helen's eyes filled.

"And every morning I told myself I would give it to Gabriel, and every morning I pictured David walking into work and being fired because of me."

Chloe looked away.

She wanted to be angry.

She was angry.

But she also understood what fear could make people postpone.

"Send it to Collins and Gabriel."

Helen hesitated.

"Once I do, there is no taking it back."

Chloe met her eyes.

"That's the point."

Helen sent the file.

At Vale Meridian headquarters, Gabriel's phone vibrated in the middle of Marcus Dean's presentation.

Twelve board members sat around a black glass table overlooking Manhattan.

Evelyn Whitmore occupied a guest seat near the far end.

Lauren was absent because of the police inquiry at the estate.

Marcus stood beside a screen displaying a timeline titled GOVERNANCE RISK - NORTH HARBOR CLAIM.

"As I was saying, the individual presenting herself as Chloe Bennett is legally Chloe Avery."

Gabriel looked down at Helen's message.

AUDIO - PLAY THIS NOW.

Marcus continued.

"Her father was terminated from Vale Meridian after financial irregularities."

Gabriel connected his phone to the conference-room speaker.

"Before you continue, everyone should hear something."

Marcus frowned.

"What is that?"

"Context."

Gabriel pressed play.

Lauren's recorded voice filled the room.

My mother did not spend twenty years cleaning up the Avery problem just so some maid could open the wrong box before the wedding.

Several board members looked at Evelyn.

Her expression did not move.

Then Lauren's voice continued.

If Gabriel finds North Harbor before the marriage is final, Marcus says the whole structure can collapse.

Nobody looked at Evelyn anymore.

Every face turned toward Marcus.

Gabriel stopped the recording.

"Would you like to explain which structure Lauren was talking about?"

Marcus's face had gone gray.

"Audio can be manipulated."

"True."

Gabriel leaned back.

"So can governance clauses."

Board chair Amelia Ross removed her glasses.

"Marcus, did you discuss North Harbor with Lauren Whitmore?"

"I discuss legal structures with many interested parties."

"Before Mr. Vale knew it existed?"

Marcus looked toward Evelyn.

She did not help him.

"I was protecting the company."

Gabriel's voice hardened.

"From me?"

"From a dormant claim that could destabilize control."

Amelia turned to Gabriel.

"Do you have documentation supporting the claim?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Gabriel glanced at Marcus.

"Somewhere he can't reach it."

Marcus slammed his portfolio shut.

"This meeting has become prejudicial."

"No."

Amelia's tone was calm.

"It has become interesting."

She looked around the table.

"The motion to suspend Mr. Vale is withdrawn pending independent review."

Marcus stared at her.

"You can't do that."

"I just did."

Gabriel's phone buzzed again.

This time it was Collins.

He sent a single photograph.

It showed the master key from Helen's office inside an evidence bag.

Beneath it was a fingerprint report from the estate's biometric cabinet.

The last person to unlock the cabinet before the bracelet appeared was not Helen.

It was Marcus Dean.

Gabriel slowly lifted his eyes.

Marcus was already walking toward the conference-room door.

"Don't."

Gabriel's voice stopped him.

Marcus turned.

"Don't what?"

"Leave before security gets here."
