Chapter 14 - Helen's Choice.

By the next morning, the Vale estate no longer felt like a home.

It felt like an investigation with bedrooms.

Collins restricted access to the property.

Every staff badge was reissued.

Outside legal counsel arrived before sunrise.

Two forensic accountants worked in the library under security supervision.

Gabriel had not slept.

Neither had Chloe.

At 7:15, Helen entered the breakfast room carrying no tray.

She looked at Gabriel and placed a folded resignation letter on the table.

"I'm sorry."

Gabriel read only the first line.

"No."

Helen blinked.

"Sir?"

"I'm not accepting this today."

"I gave Lauren the security code."

"Because she threatened your son's job."

"I still did it."

"And then you recorded her."

"Four days too late."

Chloe sat quietly near the window.

Helen looked at her.

"I failed you too."

Chloe's face softened but did not erase what happened.

"You were scared."

"That's an explanation, not an excuse."

Chloe nodded.

"Then don't use it as one."

Helen looked surprised.

Chloe continued.

"Stay and help fix what you helped hide."

Gabriel looked at Chloe.

She shrugged slightly.

"Seems more useful than a resignation."

Helen took a slow breath.

"There's something else I can do."

Gabriel leaned forward.

"What?"

"David copied files from Whitmore Capital last night."

"Your son?"

"He called after the gala footage went public."

Helen pulled out her phone.

"He said the company started deleting old correspondence as soon as Lauren's trust was mentioned on television."

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"Did he take anything illegally?"

"He preserved emails he was already authorized to access for his job."

"Good."

"He also found a payment schedule to Marcus Dean."

Gabriel sat back.

"How recent?"

"Monthly for eleven years."

Chloe stared at her.

"Marcus has been paid by the Whitmores for eleven years?"

"Through a consulting company."

Gabriel's voice became cold.

"While serving as my attorney."

Helen nodded.

"David is on his way here."

Thirty minutes later, David Morgan entered the estate through the service entrance.

He was twenty-nine, nervous, and carried a company laptop in a plain backpack.

He hugged his mother before speaking to anyone else.

"They suspended me."

Helen's face fell.

"David."

"It's okay."

He gave a tired smile.

"I hated that job anyway."

Then he looked at Gabriel.

"I have something you need to see."

They gathered in the library.

David opened a folder of archived email exports.

The first chain was from Marcus to Evelyn two years earlier.

Subject: MARRIAGE TIMELINE.

Gabriel read silently.

The messages discussed Lauren and Gabriel as though they were pieces in a transaction.

Public engagement by Q2.

Wedding before North Harbor review window.

Maintain Gabriel confidence through Westbridge financing.

If Avery beneficiary appears, challenge standing before disclosure.

Chloe felt sick.

"They knew I existed."

David nodded.

"At least two years ago."

Gabriel looked at her.

"How?"

David opened another email.

This one contained a scanned private investigator report.

It listed Chloe's mother's address, Chloe's college, her employment history, and a photograph taken outside her apartment.

Chloe stood abruptly.

"They watched me."

"Yes."

"Before I ever applied here."

"Yes."

Gabriel's anger became visible.

"Who ordered this?"

David highlighted the billing line.

M. DEAN.

Chloe looked at Gabriel.

"Then my getting hired wasn't luck."

Helen went pale.

"I approved your agency file."

"Did Lauren influence it?"

Helen thought back.

"She recommended we add temporary staff before the wedding."

Gabriel stared at the email chain.

"Marcus wanted Chloe inside the house."

Chloe shook her head.

"Why?"

David opened another message.

The answer was in one sentence from Marcus to Evelyn.

If she enters voluntarily under Bennett, we can later characterize any archive access as deliberate infiltration and discredit the Avery claim before she understands it.

Nobody spoke.

Chloe finally whispered.

"They didn't just watch me."

She looked toward Helen.

"They put me here."

Gabriel felt the floor shift beneath the entire story.

Chloe had believed she outsmarted the Vale hiring system by using her mother's surname.

Marcus had known exactly who she was.

Lauren had known her father's name before the tea incident.

The cruelty in the dining room had not created the conflict.

It had merely exposed it too early.

David scrolled farther.

"There's one more folder."

"What's in it?"

Gabriel asked.

"I don't know."

David looked uneasy.

"It's encrypted."

The folder name read R.V. FINAL CONTINGENCY.

Gabriel stared at the initials.

Richard Vale.

His father.
