Chapter 6 - The Woman at the Gate.

The Vale estate gates closed behind Evelyn's convoy at 11:42 a.m.
At 11:47, someone cut power to the archive wing.
The rest of the house remained fully lit.
Gabriel was in the security office when the alert appeared.
He looked at the floor plan on the monitor.
"Only the archive?"
Security director Calvin Collins nodded.
"Only that section."
Collins was a broad-shouldered man in his early fifties who had worked private security for diplomats and corporate executives before joining the Vale estate.
He spoke slowly, like a man who disliked wasting words.
"Backup generator didn't engage because the main system doesn't show an outage."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning the archive circuit was shut off locally."
Gabriel looked at the camera grid.
"Who is down there?"
"Nobody authorized."
"That answer has not been useful today."
Collins typed a command.
Three basement cameras showed empty corridors.
The fourth showed static.
Gabriel's phone rang.
It was Chloe.
"Where are you?"
"Outside the archive room."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
"Why?"
"Because Helen told me the lights went out and I thought about the letters."
"Do not go inside."
"The door is open."
"Chloe."
"I'm not moving."
Gabriel was already walking.
Collins followed.
They reached the basement in less than two minutes.
Chloe stood exactly where she said she would, several feet from the archive door.
A narrow beam of daylight from a high window cut across the dark hallway.
The door hung open.
Gabriel looked at Collins.
"You first."
Collins entered with a flashlight.
Gabriel waited until he signaled clear.
Inside, three archival boxes had been pulled from a shelf.
One sat open on the floor.
Papers had been scattered across the room.
The box labeled M. VALE - PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE was empty.
Chloe whispered behind him.
"Someone knew exactly what to take."
Gabriel turned.
"I told you to stay outside."
"I am outside."
She was standing on the threshold.
Under different circumstances, he might have smiled.
He did not.
Collins examined the lock.
"No forced entry."
"Again."
Gabriel's irritation sharpened.
"Who has access?"
Collins looked at him.
"You, me, Helen, maintenance supervisor, and legal administrator."
"Which legal administrator?"
"Marcus Dean's office has an emergency credential."
Gabriel stared at him.
"Why?"
"Estate continuity protocol after your mother's death."
"Deactivate it."
"Already done."
Chloe crouched near the open box.
A torn corner of yellow paper protruded beneath the shelf.
She picked it up.
"This isn't from the archive."
Gabriel took it.
It was part of a courier receipt.
Only half the sender line remained.
WHITMORE CAPITAL - EXECUTIVE FLOOR.
Collins frowned.
"Could be old."
Chloe pointed to the date.
It was yesterday.
Gabriel's phone rang again.
This time the caller ID showed EVELYN WHITMORE.
He answered on speaker.
"You have impressive timing."
Evelyn's voice was composed.
"And you have poor judgment."
"Did you call to discuss electrical systems?"
A pause.
"Where are you?"
"Why?"
"Gabriel, leave the basement."
He looked at Chloe.
Collins stopped moving.
"How do you know I'm in the basement?"
Evelyn did not answer.
Then a faint mechanical click sounded overhead.
Collins looked up.
"Out."
He moved fast.
Gabriel grabbed Chloe's good arm and pulled her into the corridor.
Seconds later, the archive room's ceiling fire-suppression system released a torrent of water.
Shelves, boxes, and loose papers were drenched.
No flames were visible.
The alarm began screaming after the water started, not before.
Gabriel stared through the doorway.
"That wasn't a fire response."
Collins inspected the wall panel.
"Manual activation."
Evelyn was still on speaker.
"Are you both out?"
Gabriel's face went cold.
"Both?"
Silence.
Chloe stepped closer to the phone.
"You knew I was here."
Evelyn exhaled.
"This has gone too far."
"For who?"
Chloe asked.
"For you."
Evelyn's tone changed.
It almost sounded tired.
"You think your father was the hero of this story because nobody lived long enough to tell you otherwise."
Chloe stiffened.
"Then tell me."
"Not over the phone."
"You had years."
"And you had a normal life because I kept my mouth shut."
Chloe's eyes filled with anger.
"You call this normal?"
Evelyn did not respond.
Gabriel took the phone off speaker.
"Stay away from my property."
"You still don't understand."
"Then explain it."
Evelyn lowered her voice.
"Your father was not the only Vale involved."
Gabriel went silent.
"What does that mean?"
"Ask what Margaret did with the North Harbor Trust."
The call ended.
Gabriel stared at the screen.
Chloe looked through the wet archive room at the ruined boxes.
"Your mother."
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
"You heard her."
"Evelyn lies for a living."
"So did Lauren."
Chloe looked at him carefully.
"That doesn't mean every word is false."
Collins called from inside the room.
"Mr. Vale."
He was crouched beside the lowest shelf.
Water ran down his sleeve.
He held a small metal key that had been taped underneath the wood.
Attached to it was a paper tag in Margaret Vale's handwriting.
