CHAPTER 10: THE SECOND LIFE

CHAPTER 10: THE SECOND LIFE
The motorcycle disappeared before the police convoy could close the distance.
By the time Detective Marcus Hale reached the interstate, the rider had vanished into Boston's morning traffic.
Back at headquarters, frustration filled the operations room.
A flash drive.
A missing witness.
A mysterious SUV.
None of it made sense on its own.
Together, however, they painted a picture of careful planning.
Digital analyst Ian Mercer broke the silence.
"I found something."
Every investigator gathered around his monitor.
Ian projected a timeline across the wall.
For nearly five years, David Vance's public life had appeared almost perfect.
Financial consultant.
Volunteer at local charities.
Frequent guest at fundraising galas.
Community mentor.
But hidden beneath those public appearances was another pattern.
Over forty meetings with individuals who had become subjects of separate federal financial investigations.
Different names.
Different companies.
The same locations.
The same dates.
Agent Rebecca Lin entered carrying another folder.
"Our subpoena came back."
She spread dozens of bank statements across the conference table.
"David wasn't moving large amounts of money."
"So?"
"He was authorizing hundreds of transactions just under mandatory reporting thresholds."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Someone taught him how to avoid attracting attention."
Rebecca pointed toward another photograph.
"This man attended seven of those meetings."
The image showed a silver-haired businessman leaving a downtown hotel.
"No criminal record."
"No public complaints."
"No obvious connection."
Yet his name appeared repeatedly throughout their investigation.
Marcus studied the photograph.
"If David isn't the architect..."
"...then this man might be."
Before anyone could continue, Ian looked back at his screen.
"The encrypted folder."
"You opened it?"
"Not completely."
"But I recovered one document."
He enlarged the file.
It wasn't a spreadsheet.
It wasn't a contract.
It was a list.
Twenty-three names.
Beside each name appeared a single date.
May you like
Marcus felt a chill.
"Find every person on that list."
