CHAPTER 14: THE VOICE ON THE RECORDING

CHAPTER 14: THE VOICE ON THE RECORDING
Weeks passed.
Federal investigators executed search warrants across three states.
Several suspects surrendered.
Others disappeared before officers arrived.
The investigation dominated national headlines.
Yet Marcus remained convinced one critical piece was missing.
Late one evening, Digital Analyst Ian Mercer entered the evidence lab carrying a pair of headphones.
"You need to hear this."
Marcus recognized the audio immediately.
The original 911 recording.
"I've already listened to it."
Ian shook his head.
"Not like this."
Using advanced audio restoration, technicians had isolated background conversations buried beneath the restaurant noise.
Marcus pressed Play.
The dispatcher's voice faded.
Then another conversation emerged.
David wasn't speaking to Maya.
He was whispering toward his phone.
"...move everything tonight."
Several seconds passed.
Another voice answered through his earpiece.
"The Director already knows."
Marcus froze.
"The Director?"
Ian replayed the sentence.
Again.
And again.
The words remained unmistakable.
The Director.
Not a name.
A title.
Someone higher.
Someone every suspect appeared to fear.
Rebecca Lin entered carrying another report.
"The flash drive recovered beneath the lighthouse confirms it."
Marcus looked up.
"Confirms what?"
"Every financial transfer ultimately required approval from one account."
She placed a photograph on the table.
The account owner wasn't visible.
Only a digital signature.
D.
No full name.
No address.
No identity.
Only one letter.
Marcus leaned back slowly.
"We've been chasing David."
"But David was answering to someone else."
Outside headquarters, reporters celebrated what they believed was the end of the investigation.

Inside, Marcus realized...
It had only reached the halfway point.
