CHAPTER 15: THE LAST DOOR

CHAPTER 15: THE LAST DOOR
Six months later.
Snow drifted quietly across Boston.
The criminal case against David Vance was moving toward trial.
Dozens of witnesses had come forward.
Restaurant surveillance.
Financial records.
Recovered documents.
Everything pointed toward conviction.
Maya finally smiled again.
She accepted a new position with a nonprofit organization that supported survivors rebuilding their lives after controlling relationships.
Elena watched proudly from the audience during Maya's first public speech.
For the first time in years...
Hope outweighed fear.
Detective Marcus Hale attended only briefly.
His phone rang before the ceremony ended.
"Marcus."
The voice belonged to Agent Rebecca Lin.
"We've got movement."
Twenty minutes later, Marcus arrived at a secure federal transport facility.
David had been transferred overnight to testify before a federal grand jury.
The transport convoy never arrived.
One armored vehicle stood abandoned beneath an overpass.
Its doors hung open.
No officers.
No prisoners.
No sign of a struggle.
Only silence.
Inside the empty vehicle, investigators found a single envelope addressed to Marcus.
He opened it.
One sentence.
You arrested the wrong man first... exactly as planned.
No signature.
No fingerprints.
No DNA.
Only a small black chess king taped to the inside of the envelope.
Marcus stared at the piece for several seconds.
Then his phone vibrated.
An anonymous text message appeared.
CHECK THE SECURITY CAMERA.
Technicians immediately reviewed nearby traffic footage.
At exactly 3:12 a.m., a black sedan passed beneath the overpass.
In the rear seat sat a shadowed figure.
The face remained hidden.
But just before the vehicle disappeared...
The passenger looked directly toward the camera.
Raised one gloved hand.
And slowly tapped twice against the window.
A signal.
As though they had known the camera—and Marcus—would eventually see it.
The image froze.
The enhancement software began processing.
Pixel by pixel.
The face became clearer.
Marcus held his breath.
Just before the program completed...
The screen suddenly went black.
Every file on the server disappeared simultaneously.
Across the monitor appeared only six words.
THE GAME HAS ONLY BEGUN.
The operations room fell silent.
Marcus looked toward the dark city skyline beyond the window.
Somewhere out there...
The person known only as The Director was still free.
And now...
May you like
They knew exactly who was hunting them.
THE END... OR THE BEGINNING?
