CHAPTER 8: THE WITNESS WHO VANISHED

CHAPTER 8: THE WITNESS WHO VANISHED
By Monday morning, investigators had identified thirteen eyewitnesses willing to testify.
One stood out above the others.
Jason Miller.
A software engineer.
He had been celebrating his engagement the night everything happened.
Unlike most diners, Jason hadn't stopped recording after police arrived.
His video captured nearly fifteen minutes.
Detective Hale arranged to meet him at ten o'clock.
Jason never appeared.
His phone went straight to voicemail.
At noon, officers visited his apartment.
No answer.
His car was still parked outside.
Inside the apartment, everything looked normal.
Laptop open.
Coffee half-finished.
Wallet untouched.
But Jason was gone.
There were no signs of forced entry.
No struggle.
Just silence.
Officer Donovan frowned.
"This doesn't feel voluntary."
Crime scene technicians dusted for fingerprints.
Most belonged to Jason.
One set did not.
Meanwhile, digital analysts searched his cloud storage.
His restaurant video had disappeared.
Not deleted.
Transferred.
Someone had remotely accessed his account less than two hours before his disappearance.
Detective Hale stared at the timeline.
"They weren't trying to erase evidence."
"They were looking for something specific."
That evening, Elena received an anonymous envelope.
No return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Maya leaving the hospital.
Taken from a distance.
Written across the back in black ink were five chilling words.
Stop asking questions. Walk away.
Elena looked at the picture only once.
Then she handed it directly to Detective Hale.
"We're not stopping," she said quietly.
May you like
Hale nodded.
"Neither are we."
