CHAPTER 13: THE VAULT

CHAPTER 13: THE VAULT
By noon, Detective Marcus Hale, Agent Rebecca Lin, and two FBI financial investigators stood inside the private bank's underground vault.
The atmosphere was tense.
The bank manager unlocked the security office and replayed surveillance footage from earlier that morning.
A hooded figure entered wearing a dark overcoat and baseball cap.
The forged identification had passed the initial inspection.
The visitor never looked toward a single camera.
"He knew exactly where every camera was positioned," Rebecca observed.
Marcus nodded.
"This wasn't random."
The footage continued.
The visitor remained inside Safe Deposit Room Seven for exactly six minutes.
Not five.
Not seven.
Six.
When the individual emerged, a small metal case rested inside a leather satchel.
Then the figure disappeared.
No fingerprints.
No usable facial image.
No identifiable vehicle.
Professional.
The investigators opened the now-empty safe-deposit box.
Only one item remained.
A yellowed envelope hidden beneath the velvet lining.
Marcus carefully unfolded the paper.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
If you're reading this, someone has already taken what matters most.
The letter was signed by Rebecca's late husband.
It contained only one additional clue.
"Look beneath the lighthouse before the tide changes."
Rebecca stared at the page.
"I never knew this existed."
Marcus folded the letter.
"They left us a trail."
Hours later, divers searched beneath an abandoned lighthouse overlooking Boston Harbor.
Hidden inside a waterproof steel container was another storage device.
Unlike the first flash drive...
This one wasn't encrypted.
When technicians opened it, the room fell silent.
Thousands of files.
Shell-company records.
Secret transfers.
Forged contracts.
Private communications.
And one folder labeled simply:
FOUNDATION
Inside were documents connecting respected executives, consultants, and investors to years of financial crimes.
David Vance's name appeared repeatedly.
But it wasn't at the top.
Someone else had been directing everything.
Someone who still hadn't been identified.
Marcus looked at Agent Lin.

"We've just exposed the middle of the organization."
"Not the head."
