Chapter 11 - The Wrong Heir

Dominic wanted to dismiss Margaret's words as manipulation.

He could not.

His father had hidden evidence about Elena.

His father had hidden a master credential in Vivian's bracelet.

His father had built an entire chain of secrets around Lily.

The night no longer allowed simple explanations.

"Say that again," Dominic told Margaret.

"You heard me."

"Where is Lily?"

"Adrian moved her without my authorization."

Dominic laughed once, without humor.

"You expect me to believe you have rules."

"I expect you to understand that men like Adrian become dangerous when they realize everyone needs them alive."

"You hired him."

"For a corporate matter years ago."

"Elena died."

Margaret went silent.

Dominic's voice lowered.

"A corporate matter doesn't put a mother into the ground."

Margaret replied, "Then come speak to me and hear what Thomas refused to tell you."

"Where?"

She named an address in the city.

Sloan Arcadia's old penthouse office.

Dominic knew the building.

It had been empty for renovation for months.

"Come alone," Margaret said.

"No."

"Then bring Vivian. Leave Marcus."

Marcus heard every word on speaker.

His expression did not change.

Vivian asked, "Why leave Marcus?"

Margaret answered instantly.

"Because Thomas never trusted him."

Marcus stared at the phone.

"Funny. Thomas hired me."

"Thomas hired people he feared all the time," Margaret said.

The line disconnected.

Dominic looked at Marcus.

Marcus lifted both hands.

"If you want me to stay, I stay."

Vivian shook her head.

"That's exactly what she wants. Separate us."

Dominic turned toward the service road where his team had begun tracking the gray van.

A message arrived from the lead vehicle.

VAN LOST IN TUNNEL. NO VISUAL.

Dominic typed back a command to keep searching.

Then he made a decision he disliked.

"We go to Margaret. All three of us."

Marcus said, "She told you not to."

"I'm done following instructions from people who steal children."

They drove instead of flying.

Dominic wanted the ability to change direction if the tracking team found Lily.

During the ride, Caleb called with results from the bracelet file.

"I found another hidden data block."

Dominic put him on speaker.

"What is it?"

"Medical records."

Vivian frowned.

"For Lily?"

"For Elena. Prenatal records."

Dominic's pulse changed.

Caleb continued carefully.

"There are two paternity-related laboratory reports attached."

No one spoke.

Dominic stared through the windshield.

"Read them."

"The first report is from a private clinic. It says the probability of paternity for Dominic Vale is 99.99 percent."

Dominic almost dismissed the issue there.

Then Caleb said, "The second report was generated three days later by another lab. Same samples, according to the chain of custody. It says Dominic Vale is excluded."

Vivian whispered, "That's impossible."

"One of them was altered," Caleb said.

Marcus asked, "Which?"

"I don't know yet. Thomas stored both."

Dominic felt a strange calm settle over him.

Lily was his daughter.

He did not care what a hidden file claimed.

He had held her through fever, watched her learn to walk, slept on the floor beside her bed after Elena died, and learned every version of her laugh.

No laboratory report could rewrite four years.

But someone believed the reports mattered.

That was enough to make them dangerous.

Vivian touched his arm.

"Dom."

"Don't."

"I wasn't going to say anything."

"Good."

On the final block before the Sloan tower, Dominic told the driver to stop.

He stepped out into the wet street and looked up at the dark building.

Vivian followed him.

"What are we doing?"

"Checking whether Margaret chose the meeting place for privacy or control."

Marcus scanned the surrounding rooftops with a compact optic.

The renovation floors were mostly dark, but a service elevator light moved inside the tower.

Someone besides Margaret was already there.

Dominic called the building manager directly.

The man answered after four rings, confused and half asleep.

No contractors were scheduled overnight.

No security staff were supposed to be inside the penthouse.

"Margaret said she was alone," Vivian murmured.

"She said a lot of things," Dominic replied.

Marcus found a utility van parked behind the tower with temporary plates.

Inside were plastic floor coverings, two empty equipment cases, and a coil of network cable.

No weapons.

No obvious threat.

But the rear door carried a Halden Restoration sticker.

Vivian stared at it.

"Again?"

Dominic photographed the vehicle.

"Either Halden is everywhere or somebody wants us to see Halden everywhere."

Marcus checked the company registry from his tablet.

The registered director was an elderly accountant in Delaware.

The beneficial owner was hidden behind two trusts.

One trust administrator had previously worked for Sloan Arcadia.

That did not prove Margaret controlled Halden.

It proved her network touched it.

Dominic looked up at the penthouse again.

"We go in assuming she prepared more than a conversation."

Vivian asked, "And if she tells the truth?"

Dominic opened the building door.

"Then tonight gets its first miracle."

They arrived at the Sloan building at 12:58.

Only the penthouse lights were on.

Dominic left two trusted guards outside despite Margaret's demand.

He, Vivian, and Marcus entered through the private elevator.

The penthouse office was stripped for renovation.

White plastic covered furniture.

Exposed ceiling tracks hung above a polished stone floor.

Margaret Sloan stood alone beside the windows.

She was sixty-eight, silver-haired, immaculate, wearing a cream suit and pearl earrings as though it were noon instead of one in the morning.

She looked at Dominic with something almost maternal.

He hated it.

"Where is Lily?"

"I don't know."

Dominic crossed the room.

"Try again."

Margaret did not move.

"Adrian stopped answering me twenty-seven minutes ago."

Vivian stepped forward.

"You threatened Lily to force me into the vault."

Margaret looked genuinely surprised.

"I did no such thing."

"The messages came from Adrian."

"Adrian has been freelancing for weeks."

Dominic placed Thomas's photograph on a bare table.

"You paid him before Elena died."

Margaret's eyes moved to the photograph.

For the first time, her control slipped.

"Thomas kept that."

"He kept more."

Dominic played part of Benjamin Hale's recording from a copy Marcus had made before the case was stolen.

Margaret closed her eyes.

When it ended, she said, "Benjamin misunderstood."

"Then explain it."

Margaret looked toward Vivian.

"Your father planned to remove Dominic from control."

Vivian laughed.

"That's absurd."

"Thomas discovered Dominic had been using company reserves to cover an acquisition loss without board approval."

Dominic stared at her.

"I never did that."

"I know."

Margaret's answer surprised all three of them.

"Adrian did it using Dominic's authorization key. Thomas believed Dominic was responsible for three weeks. During those three weeks, he amended the family trust."

Dominic said, "Lily."

Margaret nodded.

"If Dominic lost control or died, his voting rights would pass into a trust for Lily. But Thomas added a biological-line clause."

Vivian's face changed.

"He required DNA confirmation."

"Yes."

Dominic looked at Margaret.

"And you had conflicting tests."

"Thomas did."

"Which one is real?"

Margaret looked directly at him.

"Neither."

Dominic felt the room shift.

Margaret continued.

"The samples were not Lily's."

Marcus asked, "Whose were they?"

Margaret's gaze moved toward Vivian.

Vivian went pale.

"No."

Margaret said, "Yours."

The room became silent.

Vivian shook her head.

"That makes no sense."

Margaret's voice softened.

"It will. Your father was not testing whether Dominic was Lily's father."

May you like

She looked at Dominic.

"He was testing whether you and Vivian had the same father."
