Chapter 15 - The Signature

The steel shutters reached the floor with a heavy final clang.
Every exterior window disappeared behind gray metal.
The laboratory lights shifted from bright white to emergency amber.
Adrian stood beside the control panel holding the remote.
Julian looked at him with open disgust.
"You were told to release the child when Vivian arrived."
Adrian did not look at his father.
"You told me a lot of things."
"This was not the agreement."
"Your agreements are why we're here."
Dominic moved half a step closer to Lily.
Adrian lifted the remote.
"I said nobody moves."
Dominic stopped.
His voice remained level.
"If that remote controls a door, you're nervous. If it controls something worse, you're stupid. Which one is it?"
Adrian smiled thinly.
"Still trying to make everyone prove themselves to you."
"Still avoiding the question."
Vivian stepped between them.
"What do you want?"
Adrian finally looked at her.
"A signed acknowledgment of parentage. A cheek swab. And your consent to challenge the Cross trust succession."
Vivian blinked.
"That's it?"
"That's the legal part."
"And the illegal part?"
"Dominic transfers the reserve evidence and withdraws every claim against the old Cross holdings."
Dominic said, "No."
Vivian turned to him.
"He has Lily."
"He also needs you. That means Lily is leverage he cannot use without destroying his own plan."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
Dominic continued.
"You're not going to hurt her. You need Vivian cooperative, not grieving and furious."
Julian looked impressed despite himself.
Adrian's face hardened.
"You don't know what I need."
"I know you brought her juice. I know you let her color. I know you moved her twice without leaving a bruise. You're cruel enough to use a child, but not reckless enough to damage the bargaining chip."
Lily looked at Dominic.
She understood none of the legal language.
She understood his voice.
He wanted her calm.
She picked up the yellow crayon again.
Adrian noticed and looked away.
Dominic filed that reaction away too.
Adrian did not enjoy looking at her.
Good.
Shame was a weakness.
Julian stepped toward Vivian.
"You don't need Dominic's permission."
Vivian laughed.
"You think this is about permission?"
"Thomas conditioned you to see the Vale name as your only identity."
"Thomas packed my school lunches when Mom was sick. Thomas sat in the front row at every terrible recital. Thomas taught me how to drive and pretended not to notice when I dented his car."
She pointed at Julian.
"You contributed a chromosome and a disaster. Don't confuse that with fatherhood."
Julian's face tightened.
Dominic watched Vivian with quiet pride.
Adrian did not.
"Sentiment won't change the trust."
"Neither will kidnapping make me want it."
Adrian removed a folder from a counter and tossed it onto the table beside Lily.
"Read page six."
Vivian did not move.
Dominic said, "I'll read it."
"It's not for you."
"Everything involving my daughter is for me."
Adrian glanced at Lily.
That was his second mistake.
Lily had stopped coloring.
Her small left hand rested beneath the paper.
Dominic saw a corner of a black plastic card between her fingers.
An access badge.
She had taken it from someone.
He did not know when.
He kept his eyes away from it.
Vivian approached the table slowly and opened the folder.
Page six contained a notarized statement prepared in advance.
It identified Vivian Vale as the biological daughter of Julian Cross and claimed she voluntarily sought recognition under the Cross family settlement.
Below it was a second clause assigning Adrian temporary voting authority while the trust challenge proceeded.
Vivian laughed.
"There it is."
Adrian said, "What?"
"This isn't about giving me an inheritance. It's about giving yourself mine."
Julian looked sharply at the document.
"Temporary voting authority?"
Adrian finally looked at his father.
"You didn't think I'd spend months doing this so you could walk back in and take control?"
Julian's face darkened.
"You altered the filing."
"I improved it."
The alliance between them broke in plain view.
Dominic almost welcomed it.
People became easiest to beat when they started fighting over the prize before they had won.
Vivian closed the folder.
"I'm not signing."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"You will."
"No."
"Then Lily stays."
Dominic said, "You just proved my point."
Adrian looked at him.
"What point?"
"You have nothing else."
For the first time, Adrian's control slipped.
He moved toward Dominic.
Julian caught his arm.
"Enough."
Adrian shoved him away.
The remote slipped in his hand.
Lily dropped her crayon.
It rolled under the table.
"Oops," she said.
Adrian ignored her.
Lily slid from the chair to retrieve it.
Dominic's heart jumped.
The black access badge disappeared beneath her drawing paper as she moved.
She crawled under the table.
Adrian turned too late.
Lily did not go for the crayon.
She ran.
Four-year-old legs carried her toward Dominic with everything they had.
Adrian reached for her.
Vivian stepped into his path.
He collided with her.
Dominic lunged forward and swept Lily into his arms.
She locked both arms around his neck.
"Daddy."
The sound nearly broke him.
He backed toward Marcus.
"Take her."
Lily clung tighter.
"No."
Dominic kissed her hair.
"Uncle Marcus is taking you downstairs. I'm right behind you."
Marcus reached for her.
Adrian raised the remote.
"Nobody leaves."
Vivian slapped the remote from his hand.
It skidded under a cabinet.
Julian shouted something.
Adrian grabbed Vivian by the wrist.
Dominic handed Lily to Marcus and turned.
His restraint finally ended.
He crossed the room and struck Adrian hard enough to send him into the edge of the lab table.
Adrian recovered and drove forward.
The two men crashed into a rolling instrument cart.
Metal trays scattered across the floor.
Marcus moved toward the exit with Lily.
The door did not open.
"Badge," Lily said.
Marcus looked down.
She held up the black access card.
"I took it."
Marcus stared at her for half a second.
Then he scanned it.
The door unlocked.
"Best security officer in the building," he whispered.
Lily almost smiled.
A man appeared in the corridor beyond.
Marcus raised one arm protectively.
Then recognized him.
Caleb Ward.
Caleb's wounded shoulder was freshly bandaged, his face pale from blood loss.
He held a laptop under one arm.
"Get Lily downstairs," Caleb said.
Marcus stared at him.
"You vanished."
"Because somebody started deleting the building access logs remotely."
He looked into the laboratory at Adrian and Julian.
"And because Thomas Vale left me one instruction for the day this happened."
Dominic heard him between blows.
He shoved Adrian away.
"What instruction?"
Caleb opened the laptop.
On the screen was a scheduled message from Thomas Vale dated three years earlier.
IF THE CROSS FAMILY MOVES FOR VIVIAN, PROTECT THE CHILD FIRST.
Dominic stared at Caleb.
"You knew?"
"Not everything. Thomas hired me privately before Marcus brought me onto the security team."
Marcus looked stunned.
"You were reporting to him?"
"Until he died."
Adrian laughed from beside the table.
"Look at that, Dominic. Even your dead father had a better intelligence network than you."
Dominic ignored him.
Caleb said, "We need to leave now. This building is about to lose power."
Vivian frowned.
"How do you know?"
Caleb looked at the laptop clock.
"Because I scheduled it."
Before Caleb killed the power, Dominic forced himself to look past the immediate confrontation and read the people in the room.
Julian watched Vivian as though he expected recognition to become obedience if he waited long enough.
Adrian watched Julian instead.
That difference mattered.
The son was no longer focused on the woman he claimed to need.
He was measuring the father who had promised him control.
Dominic had seen the same expression in hostile boardrooms seconds before partners turned on one another.
"You never planned to share anything with him," Dominic said to Julian.
Julian barely glanced over.
"This is not your concern."
Adrian laughed under his breath.
Dominic continued.
"You needed Adrian to threaten Vivian because you knew she would never respond to you. You needed him to take the legal risk, build the rooms, hire the contractors, and carry Lily. Then the second Vivian signed, he became evidence you could sacrifice."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
Julian replied, "Dominic is buying time."
"Maybe," Adrian said.
It was the first time he had not automatically defended his father.
Vivian noticed too.
She looked at Adrian.
"He was going to leave you with the kidnapping."
Adrian's eyes flashed.
"You don't know him."
"Neither do you, apparently."
Julian stepped forward.
"Enough."
The single word carried the reflex of a father accustomed to obedience.
Adrian did not obey.
Dominic realized then that the greatest weakness in the Cross plan was not technology, law, or security.
It was inheritance itself.
Julian believed blood created ownership over people.
Adrian had spent a lifetime trying to inherit power from a man who treated him like an expendable employee.
Vivian had spent less than an hour knowing Julian was related to her and had already rejected the premise.
That contrast infuriated both men.
Dominic leaned toward Vivian and whispered, "Stay near the side exit when the lights go."
She frowned.
"When?"
He looked at Caleb's laptop clock.
"Soon."
Caleb heard him and gave the slightest nod.
May you like
For the first time all night, Dominic understood a plan before the enemy announced it.
The lights went out.
