Chapter 12 - The Name Beneath the Name

Vivian laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

"You're lying."

Margaret Sloan did not react.

"I wish I were."

Vivian looked at Dominic as though he could deny the sentence on behalf of the entire family.

Dominic had no denial ready.

He had spent the night discovering that every certainty in his life had been built above a locked room.

"Whose samples?" he asked.

Margaret folded her hands in front of her.

"Thomas used hair from an old family brush and a blood sample Vivian gave after her car accident four years ago. The labs were asked a deliberately misleading question so nobody processing the paperwork would understand the real purpose."

"You said both reports were false," Marcus said.

"Not false. Incomplete. One lab compared Vivian's sample with material labeled as Dominic's. The other compared it with Thomas's."

Vivian's face lost color.

"And?"

Margaret looked at her.

"Dominic and Vivian share a mother. They do not share a father."

The room seemed to become very large around them.

Vivian took a step backward.

Dominic watched her hands shake.

He wanted to reach for her.

He did not know whether she would accept it.

"Who is her father?" Dominic asked.

Margaret hesitated.

That hesitation answered more than a name would have.

Vivian whispered, "A Cross."

Margaret nodded.

"Julian Cross. Adrian's father."

Vivian stared at her.

"Adrian is my brother?"

"Half-brother."

She turned away so quickly her red dress brushed a sheet of construction plastic from a chair.

"No."

Dominic looked at Margaret.

"How long have you known?"

"Since before Thomas died."

"And Adrian?"

"Longer."

That explained something Dominic had not understood.

Adrian had targeted Vivian because she was not simply Dominic's sister.

She was also Cross blood.

The old shareholder side agreement suddenly changed shape.

If Julian Cross had hidden rights tied to bloodline succession, Vivian could be used as a bridge into both families.

Dominic said, "The addendum."

Margaret nodded.

"Julian Cross wrote a succession clause no sane attorney would recommend today. If his registered descendants were dead or legally disqualified, certain contingent rights could pass through an unacknowledged biological descendant once parentage was established."

Marcus exhaled.

"Vivian."

Margaret looked at her.

"Adrian needs your signature and your DNA."

Vivian turned back.

"Then why take Lily?"

"Because you would never cooperate for money."

Vivian's eyes filled with fury.

"So he threatened a four-year-old."

"Adrian learned pressure from his father."

Dominic's voice cut through them.

"Where is he taking her?"

Margaret looked toward the city lights.

"If he has abandoned my instructions, probably somewhere connected to the Cross estate network."

"You said you no longer control him."

"I don't."

"But you can predict him."

"Sometimes."

Dominic stepped closer until Margaret had to look up at him.

"Predict faster."

She held his gaze.

"There is an old medical research building near the river. Julian Cross funded it through a foundation. Adrian used the basement during the litigation years."

Marcus immediately sent the address to Dominic's outside team.

Vivian asked, "Why would he need a medical building?"

Margaret answered, "Because if he intends to establish your parentage tonight, he needs a lab."

Vivian moved to the far side of the penthouse and stared at the city while the new information settled.

For years, she had believed her arguments with Thomas proved she was less like him than Dominic was.

She had been the impulsive child, the one who changed careers twice, arrived late to family meetings, and refused to treat the Vale name like a military rank.

Now a stranger's surname threatened to make every difference look biological.

Dominic joined her.

"Don't do that."

She looked at him.

"Do what?"

"Rewrite your whole life because Margaret gave you one fact."

Vivian laughed softly.

"Easy for you to say."

"No. It isn't."

Dominic looked toward Margaret.

"Tonight I found out Dad hid the truth about Elena, my company, Cross, and you. I'm running out of parts of my life that haven't been edited by someone else."

Vivian studied him.

"You still know who you are."

"So do you."

"Do I?"

"You're the person who stole my car at seventeen and blamed the dent on a mailbox that was standing still."

Despite herself, she smiled.

"That mailbox was aggressively placed."

"You're the person who slept on the hospital floor when Lily had pneumonia because you refused to go home."

Vivian's smile faded.

Dominic continued.

"You're the person I was furious with tonight because I expected better from you. None of that changes because Julian Cross had an affair thirty years ago."

Vivian looked down at her hands.

"You make reassurance sound like an indictment."

"It's a skill."

She breathed out slowly.

The panic in her face eased.

For a moment, Margaret's revelation became information rather than identity.

Then Dominic's phone vibrated with the report about the abandoned van, and the night pulled them forward again.

Dominic turned to Vivian.

"You're not going."

"Yes, I am."

"He wants you."

"Exactly."

"That isn't an argument."

Vivian stepped closer.

"He has Lily because of me."

Dominic's eyes hardened.

"He has Lily because of him. Don't confuse responsibility with leverage."

Vivian lowered her voice.

"You locked me in a storage room tonight because you thought I sold you out."

"You photographed my vault."

"To keep Lily alive."

"You still lied."

"And now you know why."

Dominic stared at her reddened cheek.

For the first time, the violence in the vault looked different in his memory.

He had acted before he knew what she had been carrying alone.

That did not erase her choices.

It changed his own.

"I was wrong about one thing," he said.

Vivian waited.

"I thought fear made you betray me."

"What do you think now?"

"Fear made you stupid."

Vivian almost laughed through the tension.

"There he is."

Dominic continued.

"But you were trying to protect her."

It was as close to an apology as he could give while Lily was still missing.

Vivian understood.

She nodded once.

Marcus's phone vibrated.

A tracking team had found the gray van abandoned inside an underground parking structure two blocks from the medical building.

The rear seats were empty.

On the floor was a child's yellow dress button.

Dominic's jaw clenched.

"We move."

Margaret stepped into his path.

"Before you go, there is one more thing."

Dominic did not stop.

"Say it while we walk."

Margaret followed them toward the elevator.

"Thomas did not create the bloodline file to expose Vivian. He created it to protect her."

Vivian turned.

"From Adrian?"

"From Julian."

"Julian is dead."

Margaret looked at her with a sadness that seemed genuine.

"No, Vivian."

The elevator doors opened.

May you like

Margaret finished quietly.

"Julian Cross is alive."
