Chapter 14 - The Wounded Man

Dominic kept his eyes on Adrian while Vivian's words settled into place.

Caleb Ward.

The deputy who had appeared bleeding in the garage.

The man who had identified the cloned credentials.

The man who had analyzed the bracelet.

The man who had controlled nearly every technical fact Dominic relied on after the blackout.

Dominic's first instinct was fury.

His second was suspicion of the fury itself.

If Caleb were guilty, why reveal an installer ID linked to himself?

Unless somebody else had found it.

"Who called you?" Dominic whispered.

Vivian answered through the earpiece.

"Caleb. He said he found an old hardware audit with his own ID and thinks somebody copied it."

Dominic almost smiled.

Of course Caleb had an explanation ready.

"Where is he now?"

"Villa lab."

"Is he alone?"

"Two guards outside."

Dominic looked at Marcus.

Marcus could hear only half the conversation.

"Problem?"

"Caleb's installer ID is on Vivian's bracelet."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"He told you that?"

"He told Vivian."

"Then either he's clean enough to volunteer it or smart enough to get ahead of it."

Dominic agreed.

Dominic used Adrian's impatience to study the room more carefully.

The glass laboratory contained no obvious weapons, but the ceiling vents were newer than the rest of the building.

A medical cart near the rear door held sealed swabs, evidence bags, and a portable label printer.

Two chairs had been bolted to the floor.

One was Lily's size only because someone had strapped a booster seat to it.

The other was adult-sized.

Vivian's intended seat.

Dominic's anger sharpened into focus.

This had not been improvised after the vault alarm.

Adrian had prepared the room days, perhaps weeks, earlier.

Marcus noticed a small camera pointed at the adult chair.

"He planned to record consent."

Dominic whispered, "Or manufacture it."

The legal paperwork Adrian wanted required more than blood.

It required a narrative that Vivian came willingly.

A video could be edited.

A frightened signature could be presented as voluntary.

A clean cheek swab could be attached to a chain-of-custody form.

Adrian was building a courtroom story inside a kidnapping.

That combination was more disturbing to Dominic than simple theft.

It showed how deeply Adrian still understood institutions.

He did not merely want money.

He wanted legitimacy after the fact.

Dominic looked at Lily coloring beneath the camera.

She had likely been placed there partly to keep Vivian compliant on video.

The cruelty was quiet, administrative, and carefully lit.

Dominic remembered Adrian arguing years ago that the cleanest victories were the ones opponents signed themselves.

At the time, Dominic had admired the philosophy.

Now he saw the rot inside it.

He whispered to Marcus, "Whatever happens, preserve every camera feed in this room."

Marcus nodded.

"Already mirroring locally."

Dominic glanced at him.

"Without Caleb?"

"I'm learning too."

Inside the lab, Adrian grew impatient.

"Are we negotiating or having a staff meeting?"

Lily looked between the adults.

She did not cry.

That frightened Dominic more than tears would have.

She was trying very hard to be brave.

"Lily," Dominic said, "keep drawing for me."

She nodded.

Adrian said, "Vivian comes in. Lily goes out. Simple."

"Nothing tonight has been simple."

"Make one thing simple."

Dominic watched the frosted rear door.

The tall shadow disappeared.

He asked, "Is Julian behind that door?"

Adrian said nothing.

"Does he know Vivian is here?"

Still nothing.

Then a new voice came through the laboratory speakers.

Older.

Smooth.

"I know."

Vivian heard it through Dominic's open channel.

She stopped breathing for a beat.

The voice continued.

"Bring my daughter upstairs."

Vivian whispered, "No."

Dominic answered the room.

"She isn't your daughter."

A soft chuckle.

"Biology is not an opinion."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"Neither is abandonment."

Adrian glanced toward the rear room as if the exchange annoyed him.

That mattered.

Dominic had assumed Adrian and Julian were aligned.

The look suggested tension.

He decided to press it.

"Adrian, does he call you son when he needs something too?"

Adrian's eyes returned to Dominic.

"Careful."

"He disappeared and left you holding his companies, his investigations, his enemies, and his debt. Now he comes back when he needs Vivian's bloodline."

"Shut up."

"He doesn't need you anymore."

Adrian moved one step toward the glass.

Dominic knew he had found the wound.

"He needs her."

Adrian slammed his palm against the control panel.

The laboratory door unlocked with a click.

Marcus whispered, "That's deliberate."

Dominic nodded.

Adrian wanted him inside.

Dominic opened the door anyway.

Marcus came beside him.

Lily dropped her crayon and started to stand.

Adrian said, "Stay seated."

She sat again.

Dominic's hands curled.

"Don't order my daughter."

"Then bring my sister."

A door behind them opened.

Vivian entered from the side corridor despite Dominic's instruction.

He turned sharply.

"What are you doing?"

"Ending this."

She walked past him before he could stop her.

Adrian stared at Vivian as though he were seeing a ghost from his own family photographs.

Up close, the resemblance was undeniable.

The same dark brown eyes.

The same narrow bridge of the nose.

The same slight tilt of the head when angry.

Vivian saw it too and hated it.

"You threatened Lily," she said.

Adrian's voice softened.

"I needed you to listen."

"You could have called."

"I did."

"You sent pictures of a child sleeping."

"Because Dominic controls everything around you."

Vivian stepped closer.

"He never controlled me."

Dominic almost objected to the historical accuracy of that statement.

He wisely stayed silent.

Adrian said, "Julian wants to meet you."

"I don't want to meet Julian."

The rear frosted door opened.

Julian Cross entered.

He was seventy-one and taller than Dominic expected, with silver hair combed back from a lined, severe face.

He wore a dark gray suit without a tie.

He looked at Vivian and stopped.

For the first time, the older man's composure broke.

"You look like your mother."

Vivian's expression turned to ice.

"Don't."

Julian recovered.

"There are things Thomas kept from you."

"He raised me. You hid."

"I was forced out."

"You were alive for fourteen years."

Julian looked toward Dominic.

"Because Thomas threatened to destroy everyone around me if I approached her."

Dominic believed that part immediately.

It sounded exactly like his father.

Julian continued.

"Thomas stole my child and then rewrote agreements to keep her from her inheritance."

Vivian laughed bitterly.

"You kidnapped a four-year-old to tell me I'm rich?"

Adrian looked at Julian.

"I told you this part wouldn't work."

Julian's eyes sharpened.

There it was again.

Fracture.

Dominic moved slowly toward Lily.

Adrian noticed.

"Don't."

Vivian stepped between Adrian and Dominic.

"Let Lily go and I'll listen to whatever document you have."

Julian smiled faintly.

"Good."

Adrian did not.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Julian's voice chilled.

"Adrian."

"You said Vivian was the exchange. You didn't say she walked out afterward."

Vivian went still.

Dominic understood before Julian did.

Adrian was no longer following his father's plan.

He wanted something else.

Adrian reached beneath his coat and removed a small remote control.

Marcus shifted his stance.

Adrian held up one finger.

"Nobody moves."

A red indicator lit on the laboratory ceiling.

Dominic looked up.

The building's security shutters began dropping over every window.

Adrian smiled without warmth.

"Family meeting's over."

Then Dominic's earpiece crackled with a voice from the villa.

May you like

One of the guards outside Caleb's lab.

"Sir, Caleb Ward is gone."
