Chapter 7 - Ash and Echo

Dominic stood inches from the steel door while seven years of unanswered questions arranged themselves behind his eyes.
Adrian Cross had once been the closest thing Dominic had to a brother.
They had built their first logistics company from a rented warehouse and two borrowed trucks.
They had slept on office floors, split one meal between them, and made promises about never becoming the kind of men who forgot where they came from.
Then money arrived.
Money did not change them at once.
It revealed them slowly.
Adrian started hiding losses.
Dominic started controlling every decision.
Their friendship turned into an accounting dispute, then a legal war, then silence.
When Adrian disappeared, Dominic told himself betrayal had already ended the friendship.
Hearing his voice now proved some betrayals only waited.
"Open the door," Dominic said.
Adrian laughed again.
"You still give orders like the room owes you obedience."
"You have my daughter."
"And you have something that belongs to my family."
"B-seventeen is empty."
"Then one of your loyal people stole it before Vivian could."
Vivian stepped closer to the door.
"Adrian, let Lily out."
"Hello, Viv."
Her face tightened at the familiarity in his tone.
"You used me."
"I gave you a choice."
"A picture of a sleeping child isn't a choice."
"It worked."
Dominic's hand closed into a fist.
Marcus examined the door hinges and keypad.
No obvious way to bypass them quickly.
Adrian continued.
"You have until 12:30 now. Bring me the envelope and the brass key. No security team. No trackers."
Dominic checked his watch.
12:07.
"Where?"
"You already know."
A click sounded.
The voice cut out.
Lily called, "Daddy?"
Dominic pressed closer.
"I'm here."
"The bad man went away."
Dominic looked at Marcus.
Marcus mouthed camera.
A tiny lens sat above the door.
They were being watched.
Dominic kept his voice calm.
"Lily, can you move?"
"My chair has a belt."
Vivian covered her mouth.
Dominic forced his expression not to change.
"Okay. Don't pull on it. Just sit still for me."
"I lost my shoes."
"I found them."
There was a pause.
"Both?"
Dominic almost smiled.
"Both."
Marcus whispered, "We need the door plan."
Dominic nodded.
Lily continued describing the room on the other side of the steel door.
Dominic turned the conversation into a game because games made observation feel safe.
"Tell me three things you can see."
Lily thought carefully.
"A green chair. A light that buzzes. And a picture of a boat."
Marcus drew a quick diagram on the back of the tunnel map.
"Anything else?"
"A little camera."
"Where?"
"Up high."
Vivian whispered, "Good girl."
Dominic asked, "Can you see a door besides the one I'm at?"
Lily paused.
"There's a tiny door."
Marcus frowned.
"Tiny?"
"For boxes."
A pass-through hatch.
Dominic looked at the wall plan and found no such feature.
The room had been modified.
Lily continued.
"The bad man has a ring."
Dominic asked, "What kind?"
"Black. With a bird."
Vivian went still.
"Adrian used to wear a black signet ring with a hawk."
Dominic remembered it from their twenties.
Adrian claimed the hawk was a family emblem Julian Cross invented when he became rich enough to believe ancestry could be purchased.
The detail confirmed the voice more strongly than any distorted recording could.
Lily whispered, "He talks to another man."
Dominic's eyes lifted.
"What does the other man sound like?"
"Old."
Vivian looked at Dominic.
They had assumed Adrian was the single organizer behind the room.
Lily had just told them someone older was nearby.
Before Dominic could ask another question, a scraping sound came through the door.
Lily said, "They're coming back."
Dominic immediately softened his voice.
"Okay. Remember what I told you. Sit still, look around, and don't argue with them."
"But you say I should tell bad people no."
"Tonight, you tell me everything later."
She was quiet for a moment.
"Okay, Daddy."
The trust in those two words nearly hurt more than the fear.
They backed away while keeping Lily talking.
Vivian remained nearest the door.
"Tell me about your juice box, sweetheart."
"It's apple."
"Is it good?"
"No."
Vivian managed a shaky smile.
"That's because Uncle Dominic buys the boring kind."
Dominic shot her a look.
Lily giggled faintly from the other side.
That sound mattered.
It told Dominic Adrian had not broken her spirit.
Not yet.
Twenty feet down the tunnel, Marcus opened a maintenance panel and traced the electrical line.
"Magnetic lock. Backup battery inside the room. If we cut power, it stays locked."
"Can we force it?"
"Eventually. Too loud. Cross may have another way in."
Vivian looked toward the fork.
"He said we already know where to bring the envelope."
Dominic understood.
The warehouse.
The burned warehouse where he and Adrian had almost died twelve years earlier.
Ash and echo.
Marcus said, "That's forty minutes away."
"Not by helicopter," Dominic replied.
"He said no security."
"He also kidnapped my daughter. I stopped respecting his rules."
Dominic called Caleb through the isolated radio.
The answer came broken but clear.
"Lab here."
"Bracelet. What did you find?"
Caleb hesitated.
"You need to see this."
"Say it."
"The modified chip was installed three years ago. Not recently."
Vivian looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked genuinely confused.
"That's when I gave it to her."
Caleb continued.
"And there is a second identity stored on it."
Dominic's stomach tightened.
"Whose?"
"Thomas Vale."
Silence filled the tunnel.
Their father had been dead for two years.
Vivian whispered, "That's impossible."
Caleb replied, "The cryptographic certificate is authentic. The chip was built using your father's master credential."
Dominic looked at the brass key in Vivian's hand.
His father had known about B-seventeen.
His father had known about Cross.
And three years before his death, Thomas Vale had secretly placed a master access credential inside a bracelet Marcus gave Vivian.
The betrayal suddenly reached further back than any of them understood.
Dominic asked, "What else is on the chip?"
Caleb said, "A file. It's encrypted, but the filename is readable."
"Read it."
May you like
Caleb took a breath.
"LILY."
