Chapter 8 - The File Named Lily

Dominic did not remember leaving the tunnel.

He remembered only the name.

LILY.

It followed him up the stairs, through the bright garage, and into the isolated security lab where Caleb waited beside an air-gapped computer.

Vivian came in behind him carrying Lily's two white shoes.

Marcus closed the door.

On the screen was a single encrypted file extracted from the bracelet.

Creation date: three years earlier.

Eighteen months before Thomas Vale died.

Long before Adrian Cross supposedly returned.

Dominic leaned over the monitor.

"Open it."

Caleb shook his head.

"It's protected with a dual key."

"Which keys?"

"One is biometric. One is physical."

Vivian held up the brass key.

"This?"

Caleb examined it.

"Could be. It has a micro-contact ridge."

Dominic placed the key into a reader slot.

The computer accepted it.

FIRST FACTOR VERIFIED.

A fingerprint icon appeared.

"Whose print?" Vivian asked.

Caleb checked the certificate.

"Thomas Vale."

Dominic stared at the screen.

A dead man's fingerprint was not available.

Then Marcus spoke.

"His office archive."

Dominic turned.

"What?"

"Your father had an old biometric lockbox. After he died, you transferred everything to storage. The glass scanner plate may still retain a usable print film if it was sealed."

Caleb looked skeptical.

"Maybe."

Dominic was already moving.

The archive room sat beneath the north wing, packed with boxes no one had touched since the estate was remodeled.

They found Thomas's steel lockbox wrapped in plastic.

The scanner glass was dusty but intact.

Caleb used a forensic lifting film from the security kit.

A partial fingerprint emerged.

"This is ridiculous," Vivian whispered.

Marcus replied, "Ridiculous is our best option tonight."

Back in the lab, Caleb reconstructed the print image.

The computer accepted it on the third attempt.

SECOND FACTOR VERIFIED.

The file opened.

A video appeared.

Thomas Vale sat behind the desk in his old office.

He looked thinner than Dominic remembered, but his voice was steady.

"If you're watching this, then Adrian came back or someone decided to use his name."

Dominic stared at his father's image.

Vivian gripped the back of a chair.

Thomas continued.

"Dominic will assume this is about ownership. He always thinks threats come through contracts because contracts are the battlefield he understands."

Vivian glanced at Dominic.

He ignored her.

"It is not about the company," Thomas said.

"It is about Lily."

Dominic's chest tightened.

The recording date was two weeks after Lily's first birthday.

Thomas leaned closer to the camera.

"There is something Dominic was never told about the night Elena died."

Dominic stopped breathing for a beat.

Elena, his wife, had died in a highway collision three years earlier.

The official report blamed a drunk driver who crossed the median.

Dominic had spent months trying to find meaning in randomness before accepting that there was none.

His father now looked directly into the camera and destroyed that acceptance.

"The collision was not random."

Vivian whispered, "Oh God."

Thomas continued.

"The driver received money through a shell account connected to a company Adrian Cross once controlled. I could not prove Adrian ordered it. But I could prove someone wanted Elena's car on that road at that time."

Dominic's hands flattened against the desk.

The room around him seemed to narrow.

Thomas said, "Lily was supposed to be in the car."

Dominic closed his eyes.

She had been sick that evening.

Dominic stayed home with her while Elena attended a charity dinner alone.

If Lily had not had a fever, she would have been in the back seat.

The video continued.

"I hid the evidence because Dominic would have gone to war before I knew who the real target was."

Dominic looked at the screen with fury.

Even dead, his father was still deciding what Dominic could handle.

"The evidence is not in B-seventeen," Thomas said.

"B-seventeen is bait."

Marcus stepped closer.

Thomas explained that the shareholder addendum and brass key were deliberately placed where anyone searching for leverage against Dominic would eventually find them.

The real evidence had been stored elsewhere.

"The key opens a safety compartment beneath the old warehouse office floor," Thomas said.

Ash and echo.

Dominic understood.

Adrian believed the envelope led to ownership leverage.

Thomas had designed it to lead instead to evidence about Elena's death.

Vivian whispered, "He baited Cross."

Thomas's final words came slowly.

"If Adrian takes Lily, do not trade the evidence blindly. Find out who has been paying him. Adrian was never the architect. He was always the man someone else hired to open the door."

Caleb froze the final frame of Thomas Vale's recording and enlarged the desk behind him.

Several file labels were visible over Thomas's shoulder.

One read CROSS - SUCCESSION.

Another read SLOAN - PAYMENTS.

A third had been turned backward so only the edge showed.

Vivian stared at it.

"Can you sharpen that?"

Caleb adjusted the image.

A few handwritten letters emerged.

E-L-E.

Dominic knew before the rest appeared.

ELENA.

He looked away from the screen.

Vivian did not.

"Dad had a whole file on her crash."

"Apparently."

"And you never knew."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"Apparently."

Caleb glanced between them and wisely said nothing.

Vivian reached toward the paused image but stopped before touching the screen.

"He sat across from us at Christmas with all of this locked in his office."

Dominic remembered that Christmas.

Thomas had seemed distracted.

Elena had been gone nine months.

Lily had been barely walking.

Dominic spent most of dinner trying to prevent his father from discussing business while Vivian kept slipping pieces of dessert to the baby.

At the time, Thomas's silence had looked like grief.

Now Dominic wondered how much of it had been calculation.

Vivian asked, "Are you angry at him?"

"Yes."

"Even if he thought he was protecting you?"

Dominic looked at her.

"Especially then."

He realized the sentence applied to both of them.

Vivian heard it too.

Her expression tightened.

"I know."

Dominic did not forgive her in that moment.

He also did not need to punish her with silence.

"If we get Lily back, we finish this conversation without secrets."

Vivian nodded.

"If we get Lily back, you can yell for a week."

"I don't yell."

"That's what makes it worse."

For one fragile second, they sounded like brother and sister again instead of suspect and interrogator.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Caleb's console beeped.

A new message arrived on the isolated line.

A photograph filled the screen.

Lily sat alone in the tunnel room.

The steel door behind her stood open.

The chair was empty.

Lily was gone again.

May you like

Under the photograph was one sentence.

TWENTY MINUTES, DOMINIC.
