Chapter 13 - The Father in the Photograph

Vivian did not enter the elevator.

Dominic pressed one hand against the door to keep it from closing.

"Move."

She looked at Margaret.

"You just told me Adrian's father is alive."

"Your father," Margaret corrected.

Vivian's face tightened.

"Don't call him that."

Margaret nodded once.

"Fair."

Dominic said, "Where is Julian?"

"I haven't seen him in fourteen years."

"That's not an answer."

"It is the only one I have."

Marcus stepped into the elevator and held the open button.

"We can interrogate family history after Lily is safe."

Vivian finally entered.

On the way down, Margaret explained in clipped sentences.

Julian Cross had not died of a heart attack in Switzerland as public records claimed.

He had vanished after federal investigators began tracing offshore accounts tied to several companies.

Thomas Vale helped create the death story because exposure would have damaged both families.

In exchange, Julian signed over active control of his business interests to Adrian.

But he did not surrender certain private trusts.

Thomas later discovered Julian had secretly maintained contact with Adrian.

Worse, Julian had learned Vivian was his daughter.

"Why didn't Thomas tell me?" Vivian asked.

Margaret looked at her.

"Because Julian wanted you recognized. Thomas wanted you left alone."

"Recognized for what?"

"Control."

Dominic understood immediately.

Not affection.

Not family.

Control.

Julian saw a daughter as another legal instrument.

Vivian looked sick.

"So Dad hid me from my biological father."

"Thomas was your father," Dominic said.

Vivian looked at him.

Dominic's voice remained firm.

"Blood doesn't get to rewrite who raised you."

For the first time that night, Vivian's eyes softened.

The elevator opened into the empty lobby.

Margaret stayed behind.

Dominic turned to her.

"If you're lying about the medical building, I come back."

"I know."

"If you contact Adrian—"

"I won't."

Dominic looked at her for another second.

"You've already made enough promises."

Outside, Marcus's vehicle waited.

They drove toward the river while Dominic reviewed the live updates.

The abandoned van contained three partial fingerprints, none belonging to Adrian.

One belonged to a temporary security contractor hired at the villa six months earlier by Halden Restoration.

The contractor's name was Owen Price.

Caleb searched it remotely.

No real driver's license.

No tax history.

No reliable address.

A manufactured identity.

Marcus said, "Professional cutout."

Vivian asked, "For Adrian?"

"Or Julian," Dominic replied.

Two blocks from the medical building, Dominic's team discovered a second vehicle connected to the operation.

It was a black sedan parked legally beneath a broken streetlight.

Inside the trunk were children's snacks, bottled water, disposable phones, and three sets of temporary license plates.

Vivian stared at the snacks.

"He planned to keep her for hours."

Dominic's face hardened.

Marcus inspected a receipt wedged beneath the spare tire.

It came from a pharmacy near the river and was dated that evening.

The purchase included adhesive bandages, juice boxes, and a small yellow coloring set.

"Adrian bought supplies," Marcus said.

Vivian looked at Dominic.

"That doesn't make him kind."

"No. It makes him prepared."

Dominic noticed one other item on the receipt.

A disposable DNA collection kit.

The purchase confirmed Margaret's theory before they ever entered the building.

Adrian had not merely wanted Vivian to sign papers.

He intended to create biological proof immediately.

Dominic photographed the receipt and sent it to the commissioner through a secure contact rather than his own network.

Marcus noticed.

"You finally stopped trusting our system."

"Temporarily."

"Growth."

Dominic ignored him.

Vivian pulled her coat tighter around the red dress.

"If he wants my DNA, he needs me conscious and cooperative enough to make the chain of custody look clean."

Marcus nodded.

"Which gives us leverage."

Dominic looked at her.

"It gives us a reason not to hand you over."

Vivian did not argue that time.

They left the sedan untouched for police evidence and continued on foot beneath the rain.

The abandoned research building rose ahead like a black block against the river lights.

Somewhere inside, Lily was waiting.

The medical building appeared at the end of a deserted block.

It was six stories of dark glass and aging concrete, officially closed for asbestos remediation.

Two of Dominic's vehicles waited out of sight around the corner.

The team leader approached.

"Thermal scan shows four warm bodies on the third floor, maybe five. One is small."

Dominic's entire focus narrowed.

"Entry points?"

"Main lobby, parking level, roof stairwell."

"No loud breach unless you see Lily moving."

Marcus drew a floor plan on the hood of the car.

Vivian touched the third-floor lab corridor.

"Adrian will expect Dominic from the front."

Marcus nodded.

"We take the parking stair."

Dominic looked at Vivian.

"You stay with the second team."

She started to argue.

He cut her off.

"This is not punishment. Adrian needs you alive. That makes you the one person I cannot let him reach."

Vivian held his gaze.

Then she nodded.

"Bring her back."

Dominic and Marcus entered through the lower parking structure with two guards.

The building smelled of dust and disinfectant.

Temporary work lights illuminated stripped walls.

On the second-floor landing, they found a phone taped beneath the handrail.

Its screen lit as Dominic approached.

A video played automatically.

Lily sat at a laboratory desk coloring on a sheet of paper.

Adrian stood behind her now, fully visible for the first time.

He looked older than Dominic remembered, leaner, with gray at his temples and a scar running from his right ear toward his jaw.

He wore a charcoal coat.

"You always did hate elevators," Adrian said on the recording.

"Good. Stairs buy us time."

The video ended.

Marcus whispered, "He knew the route."

Dominic looked at him.

"Or he covered all routes."

They continued upward.

At the third floor, a hallway light blinked on in sequence, guiding them toward a glass-walled laboratory.

Inside, Lily sat at the desk exactly as shown.

She was drawing a yellow house.

Adrian stood ten feet behind her.

No weapon was visible.

Dominic stopped outside the glass.

Lily saw him.

Her face brightened.

"Daddy!"

Dominic's heart slammed against his ribs.

Adrian raised one finger.

"Door stays closed."

Dominic spoke through the glass.

"Let her walk out."

"Bring Vivian."

"No."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Then we're done."

He reached toward a control panel beside Lily.

Dominic's hand moved toward the door.

Marcus caught his sleeve.

"Could be locked from inside."

Adrian said, "I don't want to hurt her, Dominic. I need my sister."

Lily frowned at him.

"She's my aunt."

Adrian actually smiled at that.

"She's both."

Dominic said, "Vivian owes you nothing."

"She owes me the truth."

"Truth doesn't require kidnapping children."

Adrian's smile vanished.

"Spare me the moral lecture. You built an empire from threats with better tailoring."

Dominic ignored the bait.

"What does Julian want?"

Adrian's eyes changed.

Only slightly.

It was enough.

"So Margaret told you."

"Is he here?"

Adrian looked toward the laboratory's rear door.

Dominic followed his gaze.

A figure moved behind frosted glass.

Tall.

Silver-haired.

Vivian's biological father might be twenty feet away.

Then Dominic's radio whispered in his ear.

Vivian's voice.

"Dom, we have a problem."

He did not answer immediately.

"What?"

"Caleb just called. The person who altered the bracelet chip wasn't Marcus."

Dominic looked sideways at his security chief.

Marcus stared through the glass at Lily.

May you like

Vivian continued.

"The original installer ID belongs to Caleb Ward."
