Chapter 10 - The Shadow Company

Margaret had the forensic team examine Julian's communications by noon.

What they discovered changed the entire investigation.

For six months, Julian had been negotiating privately with an investment consortium called Northbridge Atlantic.

On paper, Northbridge was legitimate.

Its representatives claimed to manage billions in private capital.

But Julian's communications showed something disturbing.

He had promised Northbridge access to future resort projects.

He had promised executive departures from our company.

He had promised client databases.

He had even promised certain development concepts created by my strategy team.

In exchange, Julian would receive a controlling position in a new hospitality company.

A company he planned to launch after divorcing me.

He wasn't simply leaving.

He was trying to copy the empire.

Margaret showed me the proposed name.

Mercer Aurelius Group.

I stared at it.

“He couldn't resist using his own name.”

My father didn't smile.

“The name is the least important problem.”

He was right.

Several documents suggested Julian intended to persuade key managers to defect.

He believed the board would collapse without him.

Maybe once, it would have.

But that was before he taught me everything I needed to know about underestimating people.

Daniel knew the properties better than Julian.

Our development director, Priya Shah, had designed the international growth strategy.

Our chief operating officer, Thomas Bell, had quietly repaired dozens of Julian's impulsive decisions.

The empire didn't depend on one man.

Julian only believed it did because everyone had spent years allowing him to take credit.

At 1:40 p.m., I called the senior management team into the ballroom.

Nearly eighty employees attended.

Some looked frightened.

Others looked curious.

Everyone had heard rumors.

I stood on the same stage where Julian had hosted company celebrations.

“I know many of you are confused.”

Silence.

“I will not ask you to choose sides in my marriage.”

A few faces relaxed.

“But I will ask you to protect this company.”

I explained that Julian had been suspended pending investigation.

I did not mention the affair.

I did not mention the penthouse.

I did not mention the humiliation.

Those were personal.

The transfer attempt was not.

“The resorts will continue operating normally.”

I looked around the room.

“No employee will be punished for following instructions issued before this morning.”

That mattered.

Fear creates bad decisions.

I wanted people thinking clearly.

Then I said the sentence Julian had never expected to hear from me.

“Effective immediately, I will serve as interim executive chair.”

The room stayed silent for two seconds.

Then someone began clapping.

Daniel.

Priya joined him.

Then Thomas.

Within seconds, the entire ballroom erupted.

I didn't smile.

Not yet.

Because near the back wall, one senior finance manager was quietly slipping out through a side door.

His name was Ethan Cole.

He had worked directly under Julian for five years.

Margaret saw him too.

She leaned toward me.

May you like

“That man just became interesting.”

She was right.
