Chapter 15 - What Julian Really Wanted

I sat across from him.
âSo you punished me for being capable?â
Julian shook his head.
âYou don't understand.â
âThen explain.â
He walked toward the window.
âEvery room we entered, people knew who you were.â
âMost people didn't.â
âThe important ones did.â
I stared at him.
âInvestors listened when you spoke.â
âBecause I knew what I was talking about.â
âExactly.â
His laugh was bitter.
âYou could sit there quietly for an hour, say one sentence, and suddenly everyone wanted to reconsider the entire deal.â
âThat bothered you?â
âIt reminded me.â
âOf what?â
âThat none of it was really mine.â
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
There it was.
The thing he had spent nine years running from.
He had always known something larger existed behind me.
He simply never knew how large.
âAnd Camille?â I asked.
His eyes dropped.
âShe admired me.â
âI admired you.â
âNo.â
He looked at me.
âYou understood me.â
I frowned.
âWhat's the difference?â
âAdmiration makes you feel powerful.â
His mouth tightened.
âBeing understood makes you feel exposed.â
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
âSo you built another company.â
âYes.â
âYou stole confidential plans.â
âI created most of those plans.â
âNo, Julian.â
My voice stayed steady.
âYou stood in front of presentations other people built.â
His face hardened.
âThere she is.â
âWho?â
âThe real Elena.â
I leaned back.
âYou mean the one who stopped protecting your ego?â
He stared at me.
I continued.
âYou could have built something legitimate.â
âYou had money.â
âYou had influence.â
âYou had access most people would never receive.â
âYou could have left our marriage honestly.â
âYou could have started another company without stealing.â
âYou could have told me you were unhappy.â
âBut none of that was enough.â
He looked away.
âYou wanted me defeated.â
He didn't deny it.
That was the last answer I needed.
I stood.
Julian turned.
âWhere are you going?â
âBack to work.â
âElena.â
I stopped.
âIf you destroy me, people will think your family bought your victory.â
I looked over my shoulder.
âNo.â
I opened the door.
âThey'll think you mistook access for ownership.â
May you like
Then I left him standing beside the window.
The next morning, we filed suit.
