Chapter 11 - The Man Who Ran

Ethan Cole disappeared before security reached the hallway.

His office was empty.

His laptop was gone.

His company phone had been left in a drawer.

That was the kind of mistake people made when panic replaced planning.

The phone was locked.

Our forensic team unlocked it within forty minutes.

The messages inside gave us our first direct link between Julian and the attempted financial transfer.

Ethan had processed the paperwork.

He had also warned Julian that compliance would eventually notice.

Julian replied with four words.

Not after Elena signs.

I read the message several times.

A second conversation was worse.

Ethan asked what would happen if I refused.

Julian answered.

Then we make her leave.

I felt sick.

My father closed the file.

“Enough.”

“No.”

I kept reading.

“Elena.”

“I said no.”

For years, I had protected myself by believing Julian changed recently.

The messages destroyed that comfort.

He had been planning to remove me from both his life and the company for months.

The humiliation in the lobby wasn't an accident.

It was a pressure tactic.

He expected me to become emotionally unstable.

He expected me to panic.

Then, once isolated, he planned to offer a private settlement.

The settlement would have included the documents I had nearly signed.

My father's lawyer found a draft.

Julian intended to offer me five million dollars.

Five million.

For walking away from an empire worth billions.

I laughed when Margaret told me.

I laughed until tears entered my eyes.

Not because it was funny.

Because the arrogance was almost beautiful.

My father placed a hand over mine.

“You don't have to read the rest.”

“Yes, I do.”

The next message mentioned the penthouse.

Camille asked whether wearing my coat was too obvious.

Julian replied.

She needs to understand she's replaceable.

My vision blurred.

That sentence hurt more than the money.

More than the affair.

More than the lies.

Nine years of marriage reduced to a staged humiliation designed to break me.

I stood from the table.

“Where is Julian?”

Margaret checked her phone.

“He left the property.”

“Where?”

“We don't know.”

My father looked at me.

“Don't chase him.”

“I'm not.”

I wiped my eyes.

“I want every executive he contacted through Northbridge notified that any transfer of confidential information will trigger enforcement of their contracts.”

Margaret nodded.

“And Ethan?”

“Find him.”

My father studied me.

“What are you thinking?”

I looked at the message again.

Then we make her leave.

“I think Julian still believes this is about losing his job.”

May you like

I locked the phone.

“He hasn't realized yet that we know about the conspiracy.”
