Chapter 14 - Julian's Counterattack

The next morning, Julian went public.

He released a statement claiming he had been forced out of the company during a “private marital dispute orchestrated by the Vale family.”

He described himself as the founder of the modern resort empire.

He claimed I had never held an operational role.

He accused my family of using secret ownership structures to seize control.

For three hours, the story spread rapidly.

Business networks called.

Reporters waited outside the resort.

Employees received messages from journalists.

Then Julian made his second mistake.

He gave a live interview.

“I built that company from the ground up,” he said.

The interviewer asked whether the Vale family owned the controlling shares.

Julian avoided the question.

He talked about leadership.

Vision.

Sacrifice.

Then the interviewer asked about the twelve-million-dollar transfer.

His face changed.

He called it routine.

She asked about Camille.

He called the question inappropriate.

She asked whether Camille's company had received millions in consulting fees.

Julian ended the interview.

By noon, the narrative had changed.

The story was no longer powerful husband versus wealthy family.

It was suspended executive unable to explain suspicious transfers.

My father wanted us to release everything.

I refused.

“Not yet.”

He looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because Julian still thinks public pressure can force us to negotiate.”

Margaret understood.

“You want him to keep talking.”

“Yes.”

People reveal the most when they believe they are winning.

At 2:15 p.m., Julian's attorneys sent a demand.

Reinstate Julian as CEO.

Release ten million dollars in severance.

Guarantee his vested equity.

Drop all internal claims.

In exchange, he would agree not to sue.

Margaret read the letter twice.

Then she looked at me.

“He's bluffing.”

“I know.”

“What do you want to do?”

“Nothing.”

My father smiled slightly.

Silence terrified Julian more than confrontation.

By evening, another message arrived.

This one came directly from Julian.

Meet me tonight.

No lawyers.

No father.

Just us.

I stared at the screen.

Margaret shook her head.

“Don't.”

My father agreed.

“You owe him nothing.”

Maybe they were right.

But there was one question I still needed answered.

Not about the money.

Not about Camille.

Not about Northbridge.

About us.

So at 9:00 p.m., I entered the closed restaurant on the resort's twenty-third floor.

Julian was waiting alone beside the window.

For the first time since I met him, he looked ordinary.

No assistants.

No executive title.

No audience.

Just a man in a dark suit staring at a city that no longer answered to him.

He turned when I entered.

“Elena.”

I remained standing.

“Why?”

He looked down.

“You'll have to be more specific.”

“Why did you need to humiliate me?”

That question finally broke through his performance.

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he said something I would remember forever.

May you like

“Because you never needed me.”

The answer was worse than any lie.
