Chapter 6 - The Keycard

At 5:31 a.m., Julian stepped out of the penthouse wearing the same tuxedo shirt from the night before.
Camille followed him in a silk robe from my closet.
I knew because Daniel later showed me the security footage.
Julian reached his private elevator.
He pressed his executive keycard against the panel.
Red light.
He tried again.
Red.
A third time.
Nothing.
Camille laughed.
âProbably a system glitch.â
Julian did not laugh.
He called security.
No answer.
He called the night manager.
The manager answered but explained that executive permissions had been updated.
Julian demanded they be restored.
The manager refused.
That was when panic first entered his voice.
By 5:44 a.m., Julian was in the lobby.
The same lobby where he had humiliated me seven hours earlier.
Employees watched him cross the marble floor.
He stormed toward Daniel.
âWhat the hell is happening?â
Daniel stood behind the front desk.
âYour access privileges have been suspended.â
âBy whom?â
âThe controlling board.â
Julian stared at him.
âI am the controlling board.â
Daniel said nothing.
That silence did more damage than an argument could have.
Julian pulled out his phone and called the chief financial officer.
Straight to voicemail.
He called the corporate attorney.
No answer.
He tried three board members.
Nothing.
Then he called me.
I was sitting in a black sedan across the street.
I watched his name appear on my screen.
I let it ring.
He called again.
Then again.
On the fourth call, I answered.
âElena.â
He said my name as if last night had never happened.
âGood morning.â
âWhat did you do?â
I looked through the windshield at the resort entrance.
âI don't understand.â
âDon't play games.â
His voice rose.
âMy cards are frozen.â
âI heard.â
âMy access is gone.â
âI heard that too.â
âYou called your father.â
âYes.â
Silence.
Then he laughed once.
It was a nervous sound disguised as arrogance.
âYour father can't remove me from my own company.â
There it was again.
My company.
I opened the sedan door.
âJulian.â
âWhat?â
âLook outside.â
The resort doors opened.
I stepped onto the pavement.
Across the lobby, Julian saw me.
His expression changed.
I walked beneath the entrance canopy.
No security guard stopped me.
In fact, the head of security moved aside.
âGood morning, Ms. Vale.â
Julian's face drained.
I entered the lobby.
Employees turned toward me.
Camille appeared near the elevator wearing my coat again.
My emerald pendant still rested around her neck.
Julian walked toward me.
âThis is insane.â
âNo.â
I stopped several feet from him.
âThis is governance.â
He lowered his voice.
âWhatever you're trying to prove, stop.â
I almost smiled.
âYou still don't understand.â
âUnderstand what?â
I looked around the lobby.
Then back at him.
âYou were right about one thing last night.â
His jaw tightened.
âThis resort does belong to someone.â
He waited.
May you like
I said the words slowly.
âIt just isn't you.â
