Chapter 12 - Camille Changes Sides

Camille called me at 6:22 that evening.
I almost ignored her.
Then I remembered Julian's face when he saw the emerald in my hand.
I answered.
âWhere are you?â
Her breathing was fast.
âMy apartment.â
âIs Julian there?â
âNo.â
âWhy are you calling me?â
âHe knows I talked to you.â
âYou barely told me anything.â
âHe doesn't know that.â
I stood from my desk.
âWhat happened?â
âHe came here furious.â
âDid he threaten you?â
A pause.
âNot exactly.â
I waited.
Camille continued.
âHe demanded my laptop.â
âWhy?â
âThere are copies of things.â
My pulse quickened.
âWhat things?â
âContracts.â
âWhat contracts?â
âJulian's new company.â
I looked at Margaret, who was sitting across from me.
I put the call on speaker.
Camille continued.
âNorthbridge agreements.â
âDo you still have them?â
âYes.â
âDon't send them electronically.â
âWhy?â
âBecause if Julian is monitoring your accounts, he'll know.â
Silence.
Then Camille said something unexpected.
âI didn't know you owned the resorts.â
âI noticed.â
âHe told me your family had some old minority stake.â
âOf course he did.â
âHe said you barely understood the business.â
Margaret raised an eyebrow.
I almost smiled.
Camille continued.
âHe said he built everything.â
âHe says that often.â
âHe told me once you were only useful because your father introduced him to people.â
That one hurt.
I didn't let her hear it.
âWhy are you helping me now?â
Camille went quiet.
Finally, she answered.
âBecause he lied to me too.â
âThat doesn't make us allies.â
âI know.â
âHe stole from me for you.â
âI know.â
âYou stood behind him while I was thrown out.â
âI know.â
Her voice cracked.
âI thought you were weak.â
I looked out the office window.
The resort lights had begun glowing across the gardens.
âAnd now?â
âNow I think Julian was terrified of you.â
That surprised me.
âWhy?â
âBecause you were the one person in every room who didn't need him.â
I said nothing.
Camille continued.
âHe hated that.â
There it was.
A truth so simple I had missed it for years.
Julian hadn't fallen out of love because I failed him.
He resented me because I could survive without him.
Camille gave us an address.
Margaret sent two investigators and an attorney.
By 8:00 p.m., we had the documents.
Julian had promised Northbridge intellectual property he did not own.
He had promised financial data he had no right to disclose.
And worst of all, he had included a timeline.
Three days after removing me from the flagship resort, he planned to announce our separation.
Five days later, six senior executives would resign.
Within two weeks, Mercer Aurelius Group would reveal a luxury development project almost identical to one our company had been planning in secret.
Julian wasn't improvising.
He had built an entire escape route.
May you like
He simply made one mistake.
He built it across land my family owned.
