Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Door

By seven o'clock, every senior executive in the flagship resort had received instructions to report to the top-floor boardroom.
Julian arrived first.
His old keycard did not open the boardroom door.
He stood outside pounding until Daniel let him in.
I was already seated at the far end of the table.
My father sat beside me.
Julian stopped walking.
He hadn't seen my father in eight months.
Richard Vale had always intimidated Julian.
Not because he raised his voice.
Because he never needed to.
Camille tried to enter behind Julian.
Margaret blocked her.
âThis meeting is restricted.â
Camille looked at Julian.
He snapped, âShe's with me.â
Margaret didn't move.
âNo, Mr. Mercer.â
Julian stared at her.
âExcuse me?â
Margaret opened the boardroom door wider.
âYou may enter.â
She looked at Camille.
âMs. Laurent may not.â
The door closed between them.
Julian took a seat.
âWhat exactly is this?â
My father slid a document across the table.
âNotice of temporary suspension.â
Julian didn't touch it.
âYou can't suspend me.â
âI already have.â
âYou have no authority.â
My father turned another document toward him.
âVale Meridian Holdings owns sixty-eight percent of voting control.â
Julian froze.
I watched the calculation move across his face.
He had heard the name.
Of course he had.
Vale Meridian appeared throughout our corporate structure.
But it was usually buried behind subsidiaries.
He looked at me.
âThat's your father's company?â
I answered.
âMy family's.â
âHow much?â
âSixty-eight percent.â
âNo.â
He shook his head.
âNo, that's impossible.â
Margaret placed additional records on the table.
âHere are the audited ownership filings.â
Julian flipped through the pages.
His movements grew faster.
âWhat about Crown International?â
âForty-one percent owned by Vale Meridian.â
âThe property division?â
âWholly controlled by the Vale Land Trust.â
âThe overseas leases?â
âControlled through family entities.â
Julian stared at me.
âYou knew.â
âYes.â
âFor nine years?â
âYes.â
His face twisted.
âYou lied to me.â
I felt something almost like sadness.
Then I remembered Camille in my bedroom.
âI didn't lie.â
âYou let me believe this was ours.â
âIt could have been.â
He looked confused.
I continued.
âYou had management authority.â
âYou had equity.â
âYou had enormous compensation.â
âYou had every opportunity to build something beside me.â
âBut you decided beside me wasn't enough.â
His face hardened.
âThis is revenge because I wanted a divorce.â
I shook my head.
âYou didn't ask for a divorce.â
âYou had security throw me into the rain while your mistress wore my grandmother's jewelry.â
My father looked at Julian.
For the first time, his calm expression changed.
âYou did what?â
Julian said nothing.
Margaret slid one final document forward.
âAnd then there is the matter of twelve million dollars.â
Julian's eyes dropped.
May you like
That reaction told me everything.
He knew exactly what she meant.
