Chapter 14: Fire and Ash
By the time Vanguard helicopters arrived on the scene, the highway was a burning graveyard. The federal transport vehicles had been blown off the road by RPG fire. Sirens wailed into the night, mixing with the crackle of burning diesel fuel.
Vance and our tactical teams repelled down, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter. I stayed in the chopper, watching through the thermal camera.
"Target vehicle is breached," Vance's voice crackled over the radio. "Federal marshals are KIA. The transport cage has been cut open with a thermite torch."
My heart hammered against my ribs. Had they killed him? Or had they extracted him?

There was a long pause. When Vance spoke again, his voice was tight. "He's gone. No body. They took him alive."
