The deafening chatter of assault rifles filled the cabin as high-caliber rounds slammed into our bulletproof glass, spider-webbing the windows. I hit the floorboards, my heart pounding in my throat, my freshly healed scars pulling painfully.
My driver, a former Special Forces operator named Vance, didn't panic. He slammed the SUV into reverse, the massive engine roaring as he backed over the curb, smashing through a row of parked cars to break out of the kill zone.

"Contact left! Contact right!" Vance barked into his comms.
Black-clad mercenaries poured from the alley, advancing on our crippled vehicle. But they had underestimated the Vanguard Group. From the rooftops above, my father’s overwatch snipers opened fire. The heavy thud-thud-thud of suppressed sniper fire dropped the advancing mercenaries in their tracks. We barely escaped, tearing onto the highway with blown-out tires, leaving a warzone in our wake.
