Chapter 7 - Margaret's SecretThey found Margaret in an abandoned warehouse.
She was sitting beneath a single overhead light.
Victor stood behind her.
Ethan walked inside.
“Let her go.”
Victor smiled.
“Where is the journal?”
Ethan held up the book.
“This?”
Victor shook his head.
“That is the copy.”
Emma stepped forward.
Victor's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked surprised.
“You.”
Emma stared at him.
“You thought I was dead.”
Victor laughed.
“You were supposed to be.”
Margaret looked at Ethan.
“I am sorry.”
Ethan's voice was cold.
“You keep saying that.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“Then tell me now.”
Margaret took a breath.
“The real journal is hidden beneath the house.”
Victor stepped closer.
“Where?”
Margaret refused to answer.
Victor's smile vanished.
Ethan moved forward.
“You wanted Lily safe.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you work with Victor?”
Margaret looked at him.
“I never worked for him.”
Victor laughed.
“She did.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I worked against him.”
Ethan stared.
Margaret explained.
She had secretly recorded Victor for years.
Daniel had trusted her.
She had created false information to keep Victor away from Lily.
But someone discovered her plan.
The family lawyer.
Claire's eyes widened.
“The lawyer?”
Margaret nodded.
“He has been feeding Victor information.”
Victor suddenly looked toward the door.
Sirens could be heard outside.
Margaret smiled.
“I called them.”
Victor grabbed her arm.
Ethan moved forward.
The doors burst open.
Agents entered.
Victor ran.
He escaped through a side door.
Margaret was safe.
But the lawyer was gone too.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Where is the real journal?”
Margaret whispered.
“Your father's study.”
They returned home.
Behind an old bookshelf was a hidden compartment.
Inside was the original leather journal.
It contained one final name.
The name of the person who had ordered Emma's disappearance.
Ethan read it.
His face went pale.
He whispered.
“It was Daniel.”
Emma stared at him.
