Chapter 11 - The Baby Shower Lie.

Meredith's email changed the atmosphere around the case, but it did not change Claire's immediate reality.
She still had prenatal appointments.
She still had a nursery half finished.
She still woke at night replaying the sound of her own body hitting the rug.
Most of all, she still had a baby who seemed determined to kick hardest whenever Claire began to panic.
The movement grounded her.
It reminded her that her life was bigger than Megan's choices.
Two days after leaving the hospital, Claire returned to Dr. Patel for a follow-up.
Ryan sat beside her in the exam room and watched the ultrasound screen as if nothing else existed.
The technician smiled.
"Baby looks active."
Claire exhaled.
"Very active."
Ryan laughed softly.
"Takes after her mother."
Claire turned her head.
"You said I was calm."
"I said you're calmer than me. That's a low bar right now."
For ten minutes, they were simply two expectant parents again.
Then Claire's phone buzzed in her purse.
She ignored it until they were back in the car.
The message came from a woman named Tessa Monroe.
Claire recognized the name from her baby shower guest list.
Tessa was a friend of Megan's from college, someone Claire had met only twice.
Hi, Claire. I think I owe you an apology, and I think you need to know something Megan told me at your shower.
Claire showed Ryan.
"Call her."
Tessa answered immediately.
Her voice sounded nervous.
"I didn't know if you'd want to hear from me."
"What happened at the shower?"
Tessa took a breath.
"Megan told me you were trying to cut her out of Ryan's life."
Claire looked at Ryan.
"She says that to everyone."
"I know. But she also told me there was going to be a confrontation about the house."
Ryan leaned closer to the phone.
"When?"
"At the family lunch. She said she was done letting Claire control the story."
Claire remembered the shower.
Pink and gold balloons.
A table full of gifts.
Megan smiling for photographs and touching Claire's belly as if they were close.
The memory felt contaminated now.
"Did she say anything about getting physical?"
"No. Nothing like that."
Tessa sounded certain.
"But she did something weird."
"What?"
"She asked me whether people believe the person who calls police first."
Ryan went still.
"What did you say?"
"I told her I had no idea. I thought she was talking about some true-crime show."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Anything else?"
Tessa hesitated.
"She showed me a screenshot of a text from you. The one where you supposedly said she'd regret coming to your house."
Claire's fingers tightened around the phone.
"That screenshot was fake."
Tessa swore softly.
"I knew something felt wrong."
"Why?"
"Because the font looked weird. I design social media graphics for work. The spacing in one line was slightly different. I told Megan it looked edited."
Ryan leaned forward.
"What did she say?"
"She laughed and said, 'Nobody notices details when they're angry.'"
The sentence hit Claire harder than she expected.
It was not a confession.
It was a philosophy.
Megan had understood that outrage made people careless.
She had counted on the family reacting before verifying.
She had been right.
"Will you tell Officer Ruiz this?"
"Yes."
Tessa's voice dropped.
"Claire, I'm sorry I believed her."
Claire looked through the windshield at families moving in and out of the medical building.
"You didn't know me."
"Still. I repeated some of it."
"Then correct it with the same people."
Tessa paused.
"I will."
That evening, Tessa posted a message in the Mercer family group chat even though she was not family.
Megan had apparently added her months earlier during the baby shower planning.
I WAS SHOWN A SCREENSHOT BY MEGAN BEFORE THE INCIDENT. I NOW KNOW IT WAS NOT AUTHENTIC. I SHOULD NOT HAVE REPEATED WHAT I WAS TOLD ABOUT CLAIRE.
The group chat stayed silent for several minutes.
Then Aunt Paula wrote one word.
What?
Tessa responded with a careful explanation.
She did not accuse Megan of the shove.
She simply stated what she personally saw and heard.
Cousin Jenna left the chat.
Linda did not respond.
Megan had already been removed by Ryan.
Claire read the exchange once and put her phone away.
"Does it help?"
Ryan asked.
"The case? Probably."
"I mean you."
Claire thought about it.
"A little."
He nodded.
"That's something."
Later that night, Rachel brought down a cardboard box from her attic.
"Mom dropped this off."
Claire frowned.
"What is it?"
"Stuff from the shower. You left it in her garage after we ran out of trunk space."
Claire opened the box.
Inside were unopened cards, ribbons, a folded table runner, and several printed photographs from an instant camera.
She smiled despite herself at one picture of Ryan wearing a paper crown labeled GIRL DAD even though they had chosen not to learn the baby's sex.
Then she found a photo of Megan and Tessa standing near the dessert table.
Megan was holding her phone out toward Tessa.
Tessa's face was turned toward the screen.
On the phone, tiny but visible, was the fake text screenshot.
"That's the moment," Claire said.
Ryan took the photograph.
"It's proof she had the fake image before the push."
"Maybe."
Claire zoomed in by photographing the photograph with her phone.
The text was too small to read clearly, but the arrangement matched the screenshot Megan later posted.
The timestamp on the instant print placed it eleven days before the incident.
Ryan sent it to Ruiz.
An hour later, Ruiz called.
"Tessa gave a statement. Meredith did too."
"And?"
"Their accounts are consistent with the messages you've provided."
Ryan glanced at Claire.
"What happens next?"
"The prosecutor wants to review everything tomorrow."
Claire felt her pulse increase.
"Does that mean Megan will be arrested?"
"I can't predict that."
Ruiz's tone remained professional.
"But I recommend you move forward with the protective-order consultation we discussed."
After the call, Ryan sat beside Claire.
"We'll do it."
Claire nodded.
She expected relief.
Instead, she felt sadness.
A protective order sounded like something strangers needed from strangers.
Not something a woman needed from the sister of the man she married.
Her phone buzzed with a final message before midnight.
It came from Linda.
I GAVE A FULL STATEMENT TO OFFICER RUIZ TONIGHT.
I TOLD HIM EVERYTHING I SAID TO MEGAN BEFORE THE LUNCH.
I SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT FIRST.
Claire read it aloud.
Ryan said nothing.
Then another message arrived from Linda.
THERE IS ONE THING I DIDN'T TELL YOU YET BECAUSE I WAS ASHAMED.
