Chapter 12 - The Stranger From Northline.

Claire did not sleep after Linda's message.
Ryan called his mother once, then stopped himself before the call connected.
Officer Ruiz had asked them not to interfere with witness statements.
Ryan put the phone down so hard the case cracked.
"She knew Megan wanted to provoke you."
Claire sat against the pillows in Rachel's guest room.
"We don't know what 'help' means."
"It means Mom knew something was being planned."
"Then let Ruiz ask her."
Ryan stared at the wall.
"How are you the calm one?"
"I'm not calm."
Claire placed a hand over her belly.
"I'm prioritizing."
The baby moved beneath her palm.
Ryan saw it and sat beside her.
The anger left his face for a moment.
"Hi, kid."
The baby kicked again.
"Apparently also awake," Claire said.
Ryan rested his hand beside hers.
"We owe you a quieter family than this."
Claire looked at him.
"Then we build one."
The next afternoon, Officer Ruiz called them to the station again.
This time Meredith Hale was waiting in the lobby.
Claire recognized her from a profile picture in the email.
Meredith was in her late thirties, with short auburn hair and the brisk posture of someone who disliked wasting time.
She shook Claire's hand carefully.
"I'm sorry we're meeting like this."
"Thank you for coming."
Meredith looked at Ryan.
"You must be Ryan."
"Yeah."
"Your sister talked about you a lot."
Ryan gave a tired half smile.
"I'm starting to hear that."
Ruiz brought them into a conference room but interviewed Meredith separately first.
Claire and Ryan waited outside.
Forty minutes passed.
When Meredith emerged, she looked angry.
Not nervous.
Angry.
"I forgot one thing in my email," she said to Claire. "Actually, I didn't forget. I was afraid it sounded too strange."
Ruiz opened the door behind her.
"You can tell them if you want."
Meredith nodded.
"Megan once asked me to help her edit a screenshot."
Claire's mouth went dry.
"The fake text?"
"I don't know. This was about three weeks before your shower."
Meredith crossed her arms.
"She brought me a screenshot and asked how to change a sentence without making the font look different. I told her I wouldn't do that. She said it was a joke for her brother."
Ryan's expression hardened.
"Did you see the sentence?"
"Only part of it. It mentioned the house."
Claire thought of Tessa noticing inconsistent spacing.
Megan had apparently tried and failed to get professional help making the fake more convincing.
"Why didn't you contact anyone earlier?"
Ryan asked.
Meredith met his eyes.
"Because until I saw the community post, I thought your sister was dramatic and dishonest, not dangerous."
The distinction was painful because Claire understood it.
People excused small lies until the lies were standing beside an ambulance.
Ruiz joined them.
"Meredith also provided a voicemail."
Ryan looked at her.
"From Megan?"
Meredith nodded.
"She left it after I quit Northline."
"Why did you quit?"
Meredith gave a short laugh.
"Because I was her supervisor."
Claire blinked.
Megan had always described Meredith as a jealous coworker who sabotaged her promotion.
"She told us you were fired."
"I wasn't. I resigned. Megan was dismissed two weeks later."
Ryan stared.
"For what?"
"Falsifying client approval emails."
The room became silent.
Meredith continued.
"She changed wording in email threads to make it look like clients approved design changes they hadn't approved. When the company discovered it, she blamed me for setting her up."
Claire felt the pattern becoming impossible to ignore.
A changed text here.
A changed email there.
A story edited just enough to shift blame.
It was not new behavior.
Only the stakes were new.
Ruiz played the voicemail with Meredith's permission.
Megan's voice sounded angry but controlled.
"You think you won because they believed you. Fine. People believe paperwork until someone gives them a better story. You'll see."
The voicemail was nearly four months old.
It had nothing to do with Claire.
Yet the sentence felt written across the current case.
People believe paperwork until someone gives them a better story.
After Meredith left, Ruiz spoke privately with Claire and Ryan.
"The prosecutor has reviewed the initial file."
Claire's hands tightened together.
"And?"
"They've authorized charges related to the incident."
Ryan inhaled sharply.
Claire's mind went quiet.
"What charges?"
Ruiz named them carefully and explained that exact classifications could change as the case moved forward.
Claire barely heard the legal terms.
She heard only that the system had moved from collecting stories to formally recognizing that something had happened.
"Will she be taken into custody?"
"She'll be contacted through counsel and given instructions. I can't discuss every procedural step."
Claire nodded.
"What about the protective order?"
"Victim services can help you file today."
Ryan looked at Claire.
"We file."
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
They spent the next hour completing paperwork with an advocate named Sonia.
Claire hated writing the incident in boxes.
Describe the conduct.
Describe prior threats.
Describe why you fear future contact.
The form demanded that fear become organized.
Ryan sat beside her but let Claire answer in her own words.
At the end, Sonia asked whether Megan had attempted contact since the incident.
Claire showed the photograph of the estate document, the direct messages, and the messages forwarded through family.
Sonia advised her to preserve everything.
When they left the courthouse annex, a woman stood across the parking lot beside a dark SUV.
Claire recognized her after a second.
It was Megan.
Ryan stepped immediately between them.
Megan did not approach.
She simply held up both hands.
"I'm not here to fight."
Ryan's voice was cold.
"Then leave."
Megan looked around him toward Claire.
"I just want five minutes."
Claire said nothing.
"You got what you wanted."
Ryan took one step forward.
"What she wanted was not to be pushed onto a floor."
Megan's face tightened.
"You have no idea what she's done to this family."
Claire finally spoke.
"Then tell the officer."
Megan stared at her.
"You really think all those people are going to stay on your side when they hear the whole story?"
Claire felt the old impulse to defend herself.
She let it pass.
"There aren't sides. There are facts."
For the first time, Megan looked uncertain.
Then she said something that made Ryan stop moving.
