Chapter 13 - The Line Ryan Drew.

Ryan drove straight to Linda's house.

Claire asked him not to.

He heard her and went anyway.

That was the first serious argument they had after the fall.

"Ruiz told us not to confront witnesses."

"She's my mother."

"That doesn't make it smarter."

"Megan said she gave her your medical information."

"Which could be another lie designed to make you react."

Ryan gripped the wheel.

"Then I need to know."

Claire looked out the passenger window.

"No. You need to decide whether you're going to keep letting Megan choose what you do next."

The sentence stopped him more effectively than shouting would have.

At the next light, Ryan turned right instead of left.

He drove back toward Rachel's house.

"You're right."

Claire exhaled.

"I know you want answers."

"I want five minutes where my sister isn't controlling the entire day."

"Then start with five."

They did not call Linda.

They called Officer Ruiz instead.

Ruiz said he would add Megan's statement to his follow-up questions.

He also warned them that Megan's direct appearance near the courthouse could be relevant to the protective-order request depending on exact timing and circumstances.

Claire sent him the location and a description of what happened.

That evening, Ryan created a new family group chat.

It included Linda, Aunt Paula, cousin Jenna, and several close relatives.

Claire asked what he was doing.

"Ending this."

He typed slowly.

CLAIRE AND I WILL NOT DISCUSS THE INCIDENT IN FAMILY CHAT.

DO NOT FORWARD MESSAGES FROM MEGAN TO US.

DO NOT SHARE OUR ADDRESS, SCHEDULE, MEDICAL INFORMATION, OR CASE INFORMATION WITH HER.

IF YOU CANNOT RESPECT THAT, WE WILL BLOCK CONTACT UNTIL AFTER THE BABY IS BORN.

THIS IS NOT A DEBATE.

He showed Claire before sending it.

"Too harsh?"

Claire read it twice.

"No."

He pressed send.

Aunt Paula responded first.

Understood.

Jenna followed.

Okay.

Linda did not respond for twenty minutes.

Then one word appeared.

Understood.

Ryan placed his phone on the table.

"That's the line."

Claire looked at him.

"Now comes the hard part."

"What?"

"Keeping it."

Ryan nodded.

The next morning, Claire received temporary protective-order paperwork through Sonia.

A short hearing would be scheduled.

Until then, the conditions were limited but clear.

Megan was not to contact Claire directly.

Sonia explained the boundaries and advised Claire to call authorities rather than engage if Megan appeared again.

Claire felt strange holding the papers.

They were both comfort and evidence of how far things had gone.

At lunch, Officer Ruiz called.

He had spoken with Linda about the medical information.

"She admits telling Megan that you had experienced early contractions last month."

Claire closed her eyes.

"We told her that privately."

"Your husband says some relatives knew you were reducing stress, but not the specifics."

"That's right."

Ruiz continued.

"Linda says Megan asked whether the doctor had called it dangerous. Linda told her the doctor had advised rest and reduced stress."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"When?"

"Two days before the lunch."

Claire looked down at her hands.

Megan had known exactly why Claire was refusing arguments.

She had known Claire was medically vulnerable to stress.

Then she had followed her anyway.

"Did Mom say why Megan asked?"

"Megan told her she wanted to understand why Claire was refusing family gatherings."

Ryan muttered something under his breath.

"There's another point," Ruiz said. "Your mother provided a text thread."

Claire sat straighter.

"What thread?"

"Between her and Megan from the morning of the incident."

Ryan put the phone on speaker.

"Read it."

Ruiz summarized rather than reading every word.

Megan had written that Claire was going to "pull the pregnancy card" if the house came up.

Linda told her not to mention the house during lunch.

Megan responded that she would say what she needed to say.

Then she asked Linda to "back me when Claire starts acting like I'm attacking her."

Linda replied, "I will tell Ryan if Claire is being unfair, but I am not getting in the middle of a fight."

Claire felt sick.

It was not an agreement to lie.

It was worse in a quieter way.

Linda had agreed in advance to judge Claire during a confrontation Megan was openly planning.

She had stepped into the lunch expecting Claire to be the unreasonable one.

"Mom gave you the thread voluntarily?"

Ryan asked.

"Yes."

"All of it?"

"She signed a consent allowing us to preserve it from her device."

Ryan stared at the floor.

"At least she's telling the truth now."

Claire heard the pain in his voice.

"That matters."

"Does it fix anything?"

"No."

He nodded.

"Good. Because I'm tired of people acting like admitting the truth after being cornered earns a medal."

Ruiz ended the call after reminding them of the upcoming hearing.

Ryan stayed silent.

Claire reached for his hand.

"You can be angry and still love her."

"I don't know what I feel."

"Then don't name it yet."

He looked at her.

"When did you get so annoyingly reasonable?"

"Around hour six of fetal monitoring."

He smiled faintly.

That afternoon, Linda arrived at Rachel's house carrying a sealed envelope.

She stayed on the porch.

Ryan met her outside.

Claire watched through the front window but did not join them.

Linda handed him the envelope.

"What's this?"

"Copies of every message Megan sent me about Claire for the last three months."

Ryan stared at her.

"Why didn't you give these to Ruiz?"

"I did. These are your copies."

Ryan did not take the envelope at first.

"Mom, why did you save them?"

Linda's face looked exhausted.

"Because some part of me knew the way Megan talked about Claire wasn't normal."

"And you still encouraged her."

Linda nodded.

"Yes."

Ryan finally took the envelope.

"Claire needs distance from you too."

Linda closed her eyes.

"I understand."

"Not forever. I don't know. But right now."

"I understand."

Ryan's voice broke slightly.

"You don't get to make her forgive you because you're sorry."

Linda looked at him.

"I know."

For once, she did not argue.

She walked back to her car.

Ryan remained on the porch holding the envelope.

When he came inside, Claire was waiting.

"You okay?"

He set the envelope on the table.

"No."

Claire nodded.

"Me neither."

They opened it together.

Most messages were familiar complaints.

Claire is controlling Ryan.

Claire thinks the baby makes her special.

Claire is changing the family.

Then, halfway through the stack, Ryan found a printed text from Megan dated three weeks before the incident.

IF SHE KEEPS HIDING BEHIND THAT BABY, SOMEBODY NEEDS TO FORCE HER TO SHOW WHO SHE REALLY IS.

Below it, Linda had replied.

DO NOT DO ANYTHING STUPID.

Megan's answer was only three words.

TRUST ME, MOM.
