Chapter 3 - Everyone Had a Version.

By seven that evening, Claire had heard three different versions of what had happened in her own living room.
The first was hers.
The second belonged to Megan.
The third appeared to have been assembled by committee in the Mercer family group chat.
According to Linda, Megan had been cornered.
According to Aunt Paula, Claire had been "emotional for weeks."
According to cousin Jenna, both women had probably gotten carried away.
No one in the family chat had been in the room.
That did not stop them from becoming experts.
Ryan muted the thread.
Then he blocked his mother for an hour after she called him six times in eleven minutes.
He did not tell Claire until Linda used the hospital switchboard to reach the room.
"Ryan, honey, I just need to know what's going on."
Ryan stared at the phone in disbelief.
"Mom, Claire is being monitored. That's what's going on."
"And Megan is alone at the house completely devastated."
Claire's eyes opened.
Ryan saw it.
His face hardened.
"Why is she still at our house?"
Linda paused.
"She didn't feel safe driving."
"Then you should pick her up."
"She says you told her not to leave."
Ryan stood.
"I told her to stay back from Claire. Then I told her not to come to the hospital. I never told her to stay in our house."
Linda lowered her voice.
"She thinks the police will want to talk to her there."
"They can talk to her anywhere."
Claire watched Ryan's free hand clench.
She knew he was thinking about the estate folder.
Several documents were missing.
He had noticed while the paramedics were preparing Claire to leave.
He had not been able to do anything about it.
Now Megan was still inside their home.
"Mom, listen carefully. Pick Megan up. I want her out of the house."
"This is escalating everything."
"She pushed my pregnant wife onto the floor. It is already escalated."
Linda exhaled loudly.
"Megan says Claire shoved her first."
Claire sat up as far as the monitor belts allowed.
Ryan closed his eyes.
"That did not happen."
"You didn't see the beginning."
"I know my wife."
"And I know my daughter."
Ryan became very still.
The sentence hung between them.
"Then I guess we know where everybody stands."
He ended the call.
Claire looked at him.
"You didn't have to do that."
"Yes, I did."
"She's your mom."
"And you're my wife."
He sat beside the bed again.
"This isn't a vote."
Dr. Patel returned just after eight.
The contractions had slowed.
The baby's tracing remained reassuring.
Claire would stay overnight for observation, but the doctor did not believe delivery was imminent.
Relief came quietly.
Claire did not celebrate.
She simply held Ryan's hand and listened to the heartbeat filling the room.
For the first time in hours, neither of them spoke.
Then Ryan's phone buzzed with a voicemail from Officer Ruiz.
He stepped into the hallway to listen.
When he came back, his expression was unreadable.
"What?"
"Police spoke to Megan."
Claire waited.
"She told them you grabbed her arm in the kitchen, followed her into the living room, and blocked her from leaving."
Claire felt something colder than anger.
"She said I blocked her?"
"Yeah."
"I was trying to go upstairs."
"I know."
"Did she tell them she pushed me?"
"She said she put her hands up to protect herself and you fell."
Claire stared at the ceiling.
The lie was almost elegant in its simplicity.
No wild story.
No impossible claim.
Just a slight change in position, intention, and sequence.
Enough to make an intentional shove sound like an unfortunate accident.
"And the camera?"
Ryan shook his head.
"Ruiz asked about the account access. Megan says she hasn't logged into it in months."
Claire looked toward the dark hospital window.
"Can they tell?"
"He's going to ask the security company."
A knock came at the door.
A nurse opened it halfway.
"Mr. Mercer, there's someone asking for you at the desk."
Ryan frowned.
"Who?"
"Your mother."
Claire's stomach tightened for a reason that had nothing to do with contractions.
"Tell her no visitors."
Ryan spoke immediately.
The nurse nodded.
"Absolutely."
A minute later, Claire's phone began ringing.
Linda.
Claire let it ring.
Then a text arrived.
PLEASE DON'T TURN THIS INTO SOMETHING THAT CAN'T BE UNDONE.
Claire read it twice.
She handed the phone to Ryan.
He stared at the message.
"She thinks you're the one doing this."
Claire swallowed.
"Or she knows exactly what Megan did and wants me to make it easier for everyone."
Ryan looked toward the door.
Outside, footsteps passed in the corridor.
A baby cried somewhere down the hall.
The ordinary sounds made the situation feel even stranger.
Claire's phone buzzed again.
This time the message came from an unknown number.
There was no greeting.
No name.
Only one sentence.
CHECK YOUR NEIGHBOR'S CAMERA BEFORE MEGAN DOES.
Claire's breath caught.
Ryan leaned closer.
"Who sent that?"
"I don't know."
He read the message again.
Then Claire remembered Mr. Calder across the street, standing beside his garage with the hose in his hand, looking toward something near the roofline.
She remembered his eyes moving from Megan to the small black camera above his garage door.
Ryan was already reaching for his jacket.
