Chapter 5 - The Family Group Chat.

Claire woke before dawn to the soft electronic pulse of the fetal monitor and the faint ache in her lower back.
Ryan was asleep in the chair with one hand still resting on the edge of her mattress.
For a moment, she did not remember why they were there.
Then she saw the bruise beginning on her elbow and the entire afternoon returned at once.
She picked up her phone.
There were thirty-one unread messages.
She should have ignored them.
Instead, she opened the family group chat.
The first message she saw was from Linda.
WE NEED TO PROTECT BOTH GIRLS FROM MAKING A TERRIBLE DAY WORSE.
Claire stared at the word girls.
She was thirty-two years old, eight months pregnant, and lying in a hospital bed after being pushed to the floor.
Megan was thirty-five.
Linda had transformed them into two children who had both lost their tempers.
Aunt Paula replied with a heart emoji.
Cousin Jenna wrote that families forgave.
Then Megan entered the chat.
I LOVE MY BROTHER AND I NEVER WANTED THIS.
Another message followed.
CLAIRE HAS BEEN HOSTILE TO ME FOR MONTHS.
Claire scrolled.
Megan posted a screenshot of a text conversation.
In it, a message from Claire appeared to say, "If you come near this house again, you'll regret it."
Claire sat upright.
She had never sent that sentence.
She knew immediately what real conversation Megan had altered.
Two weeks earlier, after Megan arrived without warning during Claire's prenatal appointment, Claire had texted, "If you come to the house again, please call first. I need rest and we can't keep doing surprise visits."
The screenshot used the same timestamp.
The message itself had been changed.
"Ryan."
He woke instantly.
"What's wrong?"
She handed him the phone.
His expression changed line by line.
"That's fake."
"I know."
"Do you still have the original?"
Claire searched her message history.
The original text was there.
Ryan took screenshots of both versions.
"Send yours to Ruiz."
Claire did.
Then she typed one sentence into the family chat.
She hesitated before sending it.
THAT SCREENSHOT IS ALTERED. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL THREAD AND HAVE SENT IT TO THE OFFICER HANDLING THE REPORT.
The chat went silent for forty seconds.
Then Megan responded.
WOW.
A second message arrived.
SO NOW I'M A CRIMINAL BECAUSE I SAVED A SCREENSHOT?
Claire did not respond.
Linda did.
EVERYONE STOP.
Ryan stared at the screen.
"She tells everyone to stop only after Megan gets caught lying."
Claire put the phone facedown.
"I can't do this all day."
"Then don't."
"They're going to keep saying things."
"Let them."
Dr. Patel came in shortly after six.
The baby's monitoring had remained stable overnight.
Claire's contractions were now occasional rather than regular.
If the next exam looked good, she could go home later that morning with strict instructions to return for any new symptoms.
Claire wanted to feel relief.
Instead, the word home made her chest tighten.
Megan had been there.
Megan might still have keys.
Megan had accessed their security system.
Megan had taken estate papers.
Ryan seemed to have the same thought.
"We're changing the locks before we go back."
Claire nodded.
"And every password."
"Every one."
At seven fifteen, Officer Ruiz arrived.
He carried a small notebook and looked more serious than the night before.
"I wanted to update you in person."
Ryan stood.
"Okay."
"The security company confirmed the login information you sent. We also have your neighbor's recording."
Claire felt Ryan's hand find hers.
"So she disabled the camera."
"The account shows her registered device accessed it and the camera was disabled immediately afterward."
Ruiz spoke carefully.
"That doesn't show the push itself, but it's relevant."
Claire nodded.
"What about the fake screenshot?"
"Keep the original conversation. Don't delete anything."
Ryan stepped closer.
"Can you make her return the estate papers?"
Ruiz looked at him.
"Tell me about those."
Ryan explained the folder and the missing documents.
Ruiz asked what they contained.
Ryan mentioned the house transfer and the reference to a sealed letter.
The officer wrote it down.
"Did your sister have permission to take them?"
"No."
"Do you know where the originals are now?"
"With her, I assume."
Ruiz nodded.
"I'll follow up."
Claire watched his pen stop.
"Officer, can I ask something?"
"Of course."
"Do you believe me?"
Ryan looked at her.
Ruiz did not answer immediately.
When he did, his voice was steady.
"My job isn't to choose who I like or who sounds more convincing. My job is to collect what can be verified."
Claire felt embarrassed by the question until he continued.
"So far, several things you told me have been independently supported."
That was as close to reassurance as he could professionally give.
It was enough.
After he left, Ryan went downstairs to arrange a locksmith and pick up breakfast.
Claire was alone when Linda appeared in the doorway.
For a second, neither woman spoke.
Linda looked older than she had the day before.
Her gray-blonde hair was pulled into a loose knot.
She held her purse against her stomach like a shield.
"The nurse said no visitors," Claire said.
"I told them I'm your mother-in-law."
"That doesn't change what I said."
Linda closed the door behind her.
"I only need five minutes."
Claire reached for the call button.
"Then leave before I press this."
Linda's eyes filled with tears.
"Please don't do that."
Claire stopped, not because she had forgiven anything, but because something in Linda's face made her wait.
Linda took one step closer.
"Megan has the letter."
Claire's hand froze over the button.
"What letter?"
"The one your father-in-law wrote before he died."
"Why does she have it?"
Linda swallowed.
"Because I gave it to her."
Claire stared at her.
The room suddenly felt very quiet.
"When?"
Linda looked toward the door as if she feared Ryan might return.
"Yesterday morning. Before lunch."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"Why?"
Linda's voice became almost a whisper.
"Because I thought if Megan finally read what her father wrote, she would stop blaming you for the house."
Claire waited.
Linda's eyes dropped.
"I was wrong."
"What does the letter say?"
Linda looked up.
May you like
"It says exactly why he didn't leave the house to Megan."
