Chapter 14 - The Statement That Changed Everything.

The temporary protective-order hearing was scheduled for Friday morning.

By Thursday night, Claire wanted to cancel it.

Not because she felt safe.

Because she felt tired.

Every legal form forced her to relive the same afternoon.

Every new witness brought another example of Megan preparing a story Claire never knew she was inside.

Claire wanted to go back to worrying about crib sheets and hospital bags.

Ryan found her sitting on Rachel's back steps after sunset.

"Cold?"

"A little."

He draped a sweater around her shoulders.

"Sonia called."

Claire groaned.

"What now?"

"Just confirming tomorrow."

Claire looked at the yard.

"I don't want to go."

Ryan sat beside her.

"Then we don't."

"You think we should."

"I think I want something in writing that says Megan stays away from you."

Claire rubbed her thumb over the edge of the sweater.

"I hate that this is our life."

"It's our week."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"Not our life. Our week. Maybe our month. But I'm not giving her the rest of it."

Claire leaned her head against his shoulder.

"That's annoyingly optimistic."

"You started it."

At eight thirty, Officer Ruiz called.

He sounded different.

More direct.

"Linda gave a supplemental statement this afternoon."

Ryan stood immediately.

"About what?"

"About the moment before the push."

Claire's heart rate jumped.

"She wasn't there."

"She wasn't in the room. She was on a phone call with Megan."

Ryan stared at the phone.

"During lunch?"

"Yes. Your sister called her from the downstairs bathroom around 1:15."

Claire remembered Megan disappearing for several minutes.

She had assumed Megan was simply avoiding the table.

"What did she say?"

Ruiz continued carefully.

"According to Linda, Megan was angry that Ryan would not discuss the house. She said Claire kept 'acting calm on purpose' to make Megan look unstable."

Claire closed her eyes.

That sounded exactly like Megan.

"Linda told her to leave."

Ryan frowned.

"Mom told her to leave?"

"That's her statement. Phone records confirm a four-minute call."

"Then why didn't Megan leave?"

"Linda says Megan replied, 'No. I'm getting the truth out of her before I go.'"

Claire's hand moved instinctively to her belly.

"Anything else?"

Ruiz paused.

"Linda says Megan told her, 'If Claire comes at me, I'm not backing down.' Linda answered, 'She is eight months pregnant. Do not touch her.'"

Ryan sat slowly.

"Mom told her not to touch Claire."

"That's what she says."

"Why didn't she tell you this on day one?"

Ruiz's voice remained neutral.

"She says she was afraid that admitting the call existed would make Megan look as if she had planned a confrontation."

Claire felt anger rise in a clean, sharp line.

"So she hid it to protect her."

"Initially, yes."

Ryan looked devastated.

"And now?"

"Now she has provided the phone records and her full account."

Claire stared into the dark yard.

Linda's statement mattered because it established Megan's mindset minutes before the shove.

It also established that Linda understood enough risk to say the words do not touch her.

Yet after the fall, Linda had still called Claire unstable.

"Why did she change her statement now?"

Ruiz answered quietly.

"She told me she listened to the recovered recorder."

Claire looked at Ryan.

"You played it for her?"

"With the prosecutor's approval, yes."

"What changed?"

Ruiz paused again.

"She heard Megan say, 'Mom said she'd back me up.' Linda told us she realized her silence was being used as part of Megan's defense."

Ryan's expression hardened.

"So she finally understood protecting Megan meant helping her lie."

Ruiz did not answer that conclusion.

"I wanted you to know before tomorrow."

After the call, Claire stayed outside.

Ryan went inside to make tea.

Rachel sat beside Claire in his place.

"You heard?"

Claire nodded.

"Do you feel better?"

"No."

"Good."

Claire turned toward her.

Rachel shrugged.

"I mean, you're allowed not to feel grateful because someone finally told the truth."

Claire gave a small laugh.

"Ryan said almost the same thing."

"He's learning."

The next morning, the courthouse was quiet and bright.

Claire wore a navy maternity dress and flat shoes.

Ryan wore the same gray jacket he had worn the day of the fall.

He had reached for it without thinking, then almost changed.

Claire told him not to.

She did not want Megan to own a jacket too.

Sonia met them outside the hearing room.

"You won't need to tell the whole story unless the judge asks."

Claire nodded.

"Is she here?"

Sonia looked down the hall.

"Her attorney is. Megan should be arriving separately."

Ryan's hand closed around Claire's.

A few minutes later, elevator doors opened.

Megan stepped out wearing a cream blazer and dark trousers.

Her hair was neatly pulled back.

She looked nothing like the furious woman from the living room.

She looked composed.

Professional.

Wronged.

Her eyes found Claire immediately.

Megan stopped.

The court officer instructed everyone to keep moving.

Megan did.

As she passed, she did not speak.

She smiled.

It was a tiny smile.

Almost invisible.

But Claire saw it.

So did Ryan.

"Don't," Claire whispered.

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"I wasn't going to."

They entered the hearing room.

Before the judge arrived, Megan's attorney approached Sonia and asked to speak privately.

Sonia returned two minutes later carrying a single sheet of paper.

"Megan is offering an agreement."

Claire looked at her.

"What agreement?"

Sonia handed her the page.

Megan would consent to temporary no-contact conditions without admitting wrongdoing.

In exchange, she wanted Claire and Ryan to agree not to discuss the case with extended family or "third parties."

Ryan read the sentence twice.

"She wants us quiet."

Sonia nodded.

"You do not have to agree."

Claire looked across the room at Megan.

Megan was watching her.

Claire folded the paper once.

May you like

"No."
