Chapter 9 - The Recording She Forgot.

Officer Ruiz returned less than twenty minutes later.
He looked at the recorder where Ryan had left it on the glass coffee table and asked everyone to step away.
"You didn't play it?"
"No."
"Good."
Ruiz photographed the device in place, then sealed it in a clear evidence bag.
Claire watched him write the time and location.
"Do you know why she'd have a recorder here?"
Ryan shook his head.
"No idea."
Claire thought back through the lunch.
Megan had carried a large brown handbag.
At one point, before the argument, she had gone into the living room alone to take a phone call.
Claire assumed she wanted privacy.
Maybe she had been placing the recorder.
"She wanted a recording," Claire said.
Ruiz looked at her.
"Of what?"
"A fight."
Ryan stared toward the rug.
"She turned off our camera but brought her own recorder."
The implication settled over all of them.
Megan had not wanted no record.
She had wanted control over the record.
Ruiz did not speculate aloud.
He simply took the device and told them he would contact them after it was processed.
The moment he left, Ryan locked the door.
Then he checked it twice.
"We're going back to Rachel's."
Claire nodded.
She had no desire to stay.
That night, the Mercer family group chat became quiet for a different reason.
Linda posted one message.
I HAVE HEARD INFORMATION TODAY THAT MAKES ME BELIEVE I WAS WRONG TO DEFEND MEGAN BEFORE I KNEW THE FACTS.
No apology to Claire appeared.
No description of the information followed.
Still, the sentence changed the tone immediately.
Aunt Paula stopped sending heart emojis.
Cousin Jenna deleted two earlier messages.
Claire noticed because Ryan had screenshots.
"Interesting," Rachel said when he showed her.
"What's interesting?"
"Everybody suddenly discovered patience when the story stopped being convenient."
Claire almost smiled.
"That's family."
Rachel shook her head.
"No. That's cowardice with matching holiday photos."
Ryan laughed despite himself.
It was the first real laugh Claire had heard from him since the fall.
The sound lasted only a second, but it mattered.
At ten, Linda called Claire directly.
Claire stared at the screen until the call nearly ended.
Then she answered.
"Hello."
Linda sounded exhausted.
"Claire, I owe you an apology."
Claire said nothing.
"I should have believed you."
"You should have waited for facts before calling me unstable."
"I never used that word."
"You told Ryan I've been under too much stress and maybe I misread what happened."
Linda went quiet.
"You're right."
Claire looked at Rachel, who was pretending not to listen from the kitchen.
"Why are you apologizing now?"
Linda took a breath.
"Because Megan lied to me about the letter."
"What did she say?"
"She said she never took it. Then I told her I saw the video from your patio camera."
Ryan's head lifted sharply.
Claire covered the phone microphone.
"Your mom told Megan about the patio video."
Ryan mouthed a silent curse and stood.
"Linda, you weren't supposed to tell her that."
Claire's voice was controlled.
"I know. I wasn't thinking."
"That seems to be happening a lot."
Linda began to cry quietly.
Claire felt no satisfaction.
She felt tired of being placed in situations where someone else's tears were supposed to erase their choices.
"What happened when you told her?"
"She started yelling. She said everybody was building a case against her. Then she said something I can't stop thinking about."
Claire waited.
"What?"
"She said, 'That wasn't the recording that mattered anyway.'"
Claire's eyes moved to Ryan.
He understood immediately.
The recorder beneath the coffee table.
Megan knew there was another recording.
"Did she say anything else?"
"No. She hung up."
"Where is she now?"
"At her apartment, I think."
"You think?"
Linda hesitated.
"She left about an hour ago."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Mom, do not call her again," Ryan said loudly enough for Linda to hear. "Do not tell her what police have. Do not warn her. Do not fix anything for her."
Linda's voice cracked.
"I understand."
Ryan took the phone from Claire.
"Do you?"
There was a long silence.
"I do now."
He ended the call.
The next morning, Officer Ruiz called before eight.
The recorder was functional.
It contained one audio file lasting twenty-seven minutes.
The first seventeen minutes were mostly lunch conversation.
Then voices sharpened.
The device had been placed close enough to capture the kitchen and living room clearly.
Ruiz asked if Claire and Ryan wanted to come to the station to confirm voices and context.
Claire agreed.
At the station, they sat in a small interview room.
Ruiz placed a laptop on the table.
"I'm going to play only the relevant section first."
Claire gripped Ryan's hand.
The recording began with Megan's voice.
"You always make decisions and then act like I'm crazy for noticing."
Ryan's voice answered from the kitchen.
"Nobody made a decision about you."
Then Claire's voice.
"I'm not staying in this conversation."
Footsteps.
Megan again.
"You always walk away when somebody calls you out."
Claire heard herself say she was pregnant and would not argue.
Then Megan's voice came closer to the recorder.
"You think being pregnant makes you untouchable?"
Ryan said Megan's name sharply.
Claire heard the scrape of a shoe.
Then a sudden thud.
Her own gasp.
Ryan shouting.
A second of chaos.
Then Megan's voice, perfectly clear.
"She made me do it."
The recording continued.
Claire said she had been walking away.
Megan said Claire had been screaming.
Ryan told her to stop talking.
Then came a sound no one had noticed that day.
Megan muttered something under her breath while Ryan dialed 911.
Ruiz increased the volume and played it again.
"Mom said she'd back me up."
Claire turned toward Ryan.
