Chapter 11 - The Protector's Successor.

Claire read the name at the bottom of page forty-three until the letters blurred.
Thomas Mercer.
Her dead mother's independent protector had been the father of the man she had married two days ago.
Lucas looked more shocked than anyone.
"I never knew."
Ava gave him a hard look.
"You have been saying that a lot too."
Lucas ignored the comment.
"My father never mentioned Clara's trust."
Rachel took the page carefully.
"The appointment makes sense."
Claire stared at her.
"How does any of this make sense?"
"Thomas was an outside financial adviser."
Rachel traced the clause with one finger.
"Your mother needed someone who could suspend trustee actions without asking your father for permission."
Claire looked around the room her mother had kept untouched for fifteen years.
"So Mom believed Dad might sell Donovan House against her wishes."
Rachel spoke softly.
"She believed enough to prepare for it."
Lucas walked to the window.
For a moment he looked like a boy standing inside an adult suit.
"If Dad was protector, why didn't he stop Henry years ago?"
Elaine answered from the doorway.
"Maybe he tried."
Everyone turned.
She had followed them upstairs but remained outside until now.
"Thomas changed after Clara died."
Elaine's voice was unsteady.
"He became obsessed with records."
Lucas looked at her.
"You said he was grieving."
"He was."
"You said that was why he stopped sleeping."
"It was part of it."
Elaine came inside.
"He kept saying Henry was moving too fast and that something was wrong with the trustee accounts."
Claire asked, "Did he know he had authority to stop it?"
Elaine shook her head.
"I don't know."
Rachel continued reading the clause.
"There is a successor provision."
Every person in the room went quiet.
"If the named protector dies or becomes unable to serve," Rachel said, "authority passes according to a sealed designation executed by that protector."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Another sealed document."
Ava almost laughed.
"Our family really loved paper."
Rachel turned the page over.
A handwritten notation appeared near the bottom.
SUCCESSOR DESIGNATION - HNB BOX 2217.
Harbor National Bank again.
Claire checked the time.
10:32 a.m.
Ninety-eight minutes before the court's noon deadline.
Rachel called the bank from the room.
The manager confirmed Box 2217 existed.
It was registered to Thomas Mercer and carried a dormant legal hold.
Access required the estate representative of Thomas Mercer.
Everyone looked at Elaine.
She stared back.
"Me?"
Lucas nodded.
"You were executor."
Elaine's face tightened.
"Henry handled most of it."
"But legally?"
"Yes."
Claire felt anger rise again.
Henry had placed himself inside every doorway.
Elaine agreed to go.
They reached Harbor National at eleven twelve.
The manager led Elaine and Rachel to a private vault room while Claire, Lucas, and Ava waited outside.
Nobody spoke for several minutes.
Finally Claire looked at Lucas.
"Did your father know my mother well?"
"Not that I remember."
"Did you?"
"I met her once."
Claire turned sharply.
"What?"
Lucas looked uncomfortable.
"I was fourteen."
"You never told me that."
"I didn't remember until we started talking about Donovan House."
"Where?"
"At a company picnic."
He rubbed his hands together.
"She gave me lemonade because I dropped mine."
Claire stared at him.
Her mother had existed in his life, however briefly, before Claire had ever noticed him.
Another tiny piece of their love story shifted.
"What else have you forgotten to tell me?"
Lucas met her eyes.
"Too much."
It was not the answer she wanted.
It was probably the first honest one.
At eleven twenty-eight, Elaine and Rachel returned carrying a thin sealed packet.
The packet bore Thomas Mercer's signature across the flap.
Rachel photographed it before opening.
Inside was a one-page successor designation dated six months before Thomas died.
Claire read the first paragraph.
If Thomas Mercer could no longer serve, the independent protector role would pass to his adult child, Lucas Thomas Mercer, upon reaching age twenty-five.
Lucas went pale.
"No."
Elaine sat down hard.
Claire read the next sentence.
Until Lucas reached twenty-five, Rachel Kim would serve temporarily.
Rachel closed her eyes.
"I never received this."
Ava looked at her.
"Because Henry handled the estate."
Rachel nodded.
Lucas stared at the document.
"So right now I'm the protector?"
Rachel spoke carefully.
"If the designation is valid and the triggering conditions occurred, yes."
Claire felt something inside her recoil.
The man who had forged her signature might now possess the power to suspend the sale of her family's most important property.
Lucas read her expression.
"I won't use it unless you ask me to."
"That's not how authority works."
"Then I'll resign."
Rachel shook her head.
"Not before we establish the transfer."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"Of course not."
Her phone rang.
Henry.
She answered.
"Did you find it?" he asked.
Claire froze.
"Find what?"
Henry was silent for half a beat too long.
"Whatever Rachel believes will save you."
Claire looked at the sealed designation.
"You knew Thomas named Lucas."
Henry exhaled.
"Claire, listen to me."
"You knew."
"Thomas was compromised."
"You knew."
Henry's voice hardened.
"Yes."
Claire closed her eyes.
Lucas turned toward her.
"How?" Claire asked.
"Because I was the one who found the designation after Thomas died."
Elaine stood.
"You told me there was nothing in that box."
Henry ignored her.
"Lucas cannot be allowed to control your mother's trust."
Claire looked at Lucas.
"Why?"
Henry answered with chilling calm.
"Because Thomas did not name Lucas to protect you."
Claire tightened her grip on the phone.
"Then why?"
Henry lowered his voice.
May you like
"Because Thomas believed Lucas would one day marry you."
