Chapter 5 - Section Nine.

Claire spent the next two hours in a law office overlooking Madison Avenue.

The attorney seated across from her was not one of Henry's people.

That mattered.

Rachel Kim had represented Claire's mother years earlier and had handled minor trust questions for Claire after college.

She listened without interrupting while Claire explained the wedding, the transfer, the forged signature, and Lucas's warning about Section Nine.

When Claire finished, Rachel asked for a copy of the trust agreement.

Claire emailed it from her laptop.

Rachel read in silence.

Outside the windows, traffic moved normally.

Claire resented every taxi, pedestrian, and coffee cart for continuing as if her life had not broken open.

Finally Rachel turned the screen.

"Section Nine is a change-of-control clause."

Claire read the paragraph.

The language was dense, old-fashioned, and almost aggressively boring.

"What does it mean?"

"Your mother created a voting trust when you were a minor."

"I know that part."

"Your father has served as trustee since her death."

"I know."

Rachel tapped the clause.

"His voting authority ends when the first of two events happens."

Claire felt her pulse begin to climb.

"My thirtieth birthday."

"Or your legal marriage."

Claire stared at her.

"What?"

"The moment you legally marry, the voting rights transfer directly to you."

Claire leaned back.

"Nobody told me that."

"Your father should have."

Claire thought of Henry's insistence that the wedding be moved up by six months because the venue had become available.

She thought of Lucas insisting they sign the license immediately after the ceremony rather than wait until the reception ended.

At the time, he had joked that he wanted no bureaucratic excuse for Claire to escape.

Now the joke felt different.

"We signed at four oh seven yesterday," Claire said.

Rachel nodded.

"Then if the license was properly executed, your father's voting authority ended at four oh seven."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Even though I stopped the reception?"

"The reception has no legal significance."

"I took off the ring."

"Also no legal significance."

Claire covered her face with both hands.

"So I'm married to a man who forged my signature."

Rachel did not attempt to make the sentence prettier.

"At this moment, yes."

Claire lowered her hands.

"And I control the Donovan trust."

"Potentially."

"Potentially?"

Rachel turned the laptop back.

"There is one complication."

Of course there was.

"Your father filed an emergency petition at nine twelve this morning."

Claire stared at her.

"Already?"

"He is asking the court to temporarily freeze the voting transfer."

"On what grounds?"

Rachel hesitated.

"Coercion and fraud surrounding the marriage."

Claire laughed so hard that it came out like a cough.

"His evidence is probably the fact that I publicly accused my husband of fraud five hours after marrying him."

"That will not help."

Claire stood and walked to the window.

"Can he win?"

"He can delay."

"How long?"

"Long enough for a board to make decisions if nobody challenges them."

Claire turned.

"What decisions?"

Rachel did not answer immediately.

"Have there been any pending asset sales?"

Claire thought of Ava's warning.

"Donovan House."

Rachel's eyes sharpened.

"What about it?"

"Ava says Lucas created Northstar to stop my father from selling it."

Rachel began typing.

"Do you know the proposed buyer?"

"No."

Rachel searched public filings.

A minute later, she found a notice tied to a redevelopment application.

The applicant was Redbridge Capital Partners.

Claire had heard the name before but could not place it.

Rachel opened another record.

"Redbridge submitted a preliminary zoning inquiry for the Donovan House parcel three weeks ago."

Claire felt cold.

"You don't file zoning inquiries for buildings you don't expect to own."

"Usually not."

Claire sat again.

"So Dad was selling it."

"We don't know that yet."

"Ava does."

"Then bring me Ava's documents."

Claire pulled out the memory card.

"First I want to hear the full recording."

Rachel found an adapter and loaded the file.

The audio began with restaurant noise.

Ava spoke first.

"If Claire gets married, Henry loses the trustee vote immediately."

Lucas answered.

"I know."

Ava said, "Then why are you waiting?"

Lucas replied, "Because if I move too early, he'll know we found the buyer."

There was a pause.

Then Lucas said the line Claire had played in the ballroom.

"Once we're married, Donovan House is finally within reach."

Ava answered.

"For Claire."

Lucas continued.

"Exactly."

Claire stopped breathing.

The edited recording had removed two words.

For Claire.

Rachel looked at her.

Claire pressed play again.

Ava's voice came next.

"She can never know until after the wedding."

Lucas replied, "She won't."

Then the recording continued.

Lucas added, "Because if she knows, she'll confront him, and Henry will move the sale before the trust transfers."

Claire closed her eyes.

The ballroom replayed in her head.

The guests.

The microphone.

Lucas saying the recording would destroy the wrong person.

She had not believed him.

A knock sounded at Rachel's office door.

An assistant entered carrying a large courier envelope.

"This just came for Ms. Donovan."

Claire stared at it.

There was no sender name.

Her maiden name appeared on the front in the same block letters as the wedding envelope.

CLAIRE DONOVAN.

Rachel put on gloves before opening it.

Inside was a copy of a purchase agreement.

DONOVAN HOUSE PROPERTY SALE.

SELLER: DONOVAN GROUP TRUSTEE.

BUYER: REDBRIDGE CAPITAL PARTNERS.

The proposed sale price was thirty-eight million dollars.

Claire turned to the signature page.

Henry Donovan's signature appeared at the bottom.

The agreement had been dated three days before the wedding.

Below it was a scheduled closing time.

MONDAY, 9:00 A.M.

Claire looked at Rachel.

"That's tomorrow."

Rachel nodded.

Claire scanned the next page and found a handwritten note clipped to the contract.

THIS IS WHY HE NEEDED YOUR MARRIAGE TO FAIL BEFORE MONDAY.

Claire's phone rang.

It was Henry.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

"Claire," he said.

His voice was calm.

"Whatever Lucas has shown you, don't sign anything today."

Claire looked at the sale agreement in front of her.

"Why?"

There was a pause.

"Because Lucas isn't trying to save Donovan House."

Henry lowered his voice.

May you like

"He's trying to buy it."
