Chapter 6 - The Mother of the Groom.

Henry's accusation stayed in Claire's head long after the call ended.
He's trying to buy it.
Rachel asked Claire not to react until they understood the ownership structure behind Redbridge Capital.
Claire agreed for nearly seven minutes.
Then she called Lucas.
He answered on the first ring.
"Where are you?"
"At my apartment."
"Stay there."
"Claire, if this is about Redbridge—"
"Stay there."
She ended the call.
Rachel insisted on coming with her.
Ava joined them outside Lucas's building, looking annoyed that Claire had ignored the instruction to come alone the day before but grateful not to be excluded now.
Lucas opened the apartment door before they knocked.
The place looked exactly as Claire remembered it from the months before they moved in together.
Books stacked beside the couch.
A broken lamp he kept promising to replace.
A framed photograph of Claire laughing on the roof of Donovan House.
She hated that the ordinary details still hurt.
"Does Northstar own part of Redbridge?" Claire asked.
Lucas blinked.
"No."
"Does Redbridge own Northstar?"
"No."
"Are you trying to buy Donovan House?"
Lucas stared at her.
"Who told you that?"
"My father."
Lucas gave a tired laugh.
"Of course he did."
Claire stepped closer.
"Answer me."
"No."
"Prove it."
Lucas walked to his desk and opened a folder.
Inside were incorporation documents for Northstar Holdings.
The managing member was listed as Lucas Mercer.
The beneficiary line was redacted on the copy.
Claire pointed to it.
"What's under there?"
Lucas hesitated.
"Your trust."
Claire looked at Rachel.
Rachel took the folder and examined the pages.
"Why is the beneficiary concealed?"
"Because the filing copy was designed to keep Henry from seeing it until after the transfer."
Claire's anger returned.
"You forged my signature and hid my own company from me."
"I know."
"Stop saying that like it fixes anything."
"I'm not trying to fix it."
Lucas looked exhausted.
"I'm trying to stop you from believing a second lie just because the first lie hurt."
A knock sounded at the apartment door.
Everyone froze.
Lucas looked through the peephole.
His expression hardened.
"What is she doing here?"
He opened the door.
Elaine Mercer stood in the hallway.
She wore dark sunglasses despite the gray weather.
Without the champagne dress and careful wedding makeup, she looked older and far more frightened.
"We need to talk," she said.
Lucas stepped back.
"You had all night to talk."
Elaine saw Claire and stopped.
"Oh."
Claire folded her arms.
"That's becoming everyone's favorite word around me."
Elaine removed her sunglasses.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
"I sent the envelope."
Lucas went completely still.
Claire felt Ava move beside her.
"You what?" Claire asked.
Elaine entered and shut the door.
"I sent the envelope to the bridal suite."
"Why?"
"Because Henry told me to."
Lucas laughed once, sharp and stunned.
"Mom."
Elaine looked at her son.
"I didn't know the audio had been edited."
"You didn't ask?"
"He told me it was proof you were using Claire."
Lucas turned away, dragging both hands through his hair.
Claire watched Elaine.
"Where did you get the photograph of Lucas and Ava?"
"Henry gave it to me."
Ava swore under her breath.
"And the bank documents?"
"Also Henry."
"Why would you help him destroy your son's wedding?"
Elaine's mouth trembled.
"Because he owns me."
Lucas turned back.
"No, he doesn't."
Elaine laughed bitterly.
"You have no idea."
She sat on the edge of the couch.
"Your father left more debt than you know."
Lucas's face changed at the mention of his late father.
Elaine continued.
"After he died, I was going to lose the house, the business, everything."
"You told me the insurance covered it."
"It didn't."
"Then who did?"
Elaine looked at Claire.
"Henry."
Silence settled over the room.
Claire remembered how close Henry and Elaine had appeared during the wedding planning.
She had assumed it was the easy friendship of future in-laws.
Now every shared joke felt contaminated.
"How much?" Lucas asked.
"One point three million over four years."
He stared at her.
"Why would Henry do that?"
Elaine swallowed.
"Because your father had found something in Donovan Group's books before he died."
Rachel straightened.
"What did he find?"
Elaine reached into her purse and removed a folded photocopy.
It was an old internal memo dated eight years earlier.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Thomas Mercer, Lucas's father.
SUBJECT: UNRECONCILED CAPITAL WITHDRAWALS.
The memo referenced nearly four million dollars in transactions authorized through trustee channels.
Henry's name appeared twice.
Claire read it slowly.
"Your father knew?"
Elaine nodded.
"Thomas confronted Henry."
Lucas looked sick.
"And then Dad died three months later."
Elaine flinched.
"Don't make that connection."
"I'm not."
Lucas's voice was tight.
"I'm asking why you never told me."
"Because I was scared."
"Of Henry?"
"Of losing you too."
Lucas turned away.
Claire felt sympathy for him and hated that too.
Elaine continued.
"Henry paid the debts and told me it was what Thomas would have wanted."
"And in return?" Rachel asked.
Elaine looked down.
"I kept quiet."
"For eight years?"
"Yes."
Claire's voice hardened.
"And yesterday you helped him humiliate your own son in front of everyone."
Elaine nodded.
"He told me Lucas was about to take Donovan House and leave you with nothing."
"You believed him?"
Elaine looked at Claire.
"I believed the man who had paid my mortgage for eight years over the son who had lied to me for three months."
Lucas's face closed.
Elaine reached toward him.
He stepped back.
"Don't."
The rejection broke something in her expression.
Claire asked the question that mattered most.
"Why are you confessing now?"
Elaine looked toward the window.
"Because Henry called me at two this morning."
"What did he want?"
"He told me to leave the city before Monday."
Rachel and Ava exchanged a look.
"Why?"
Elaine's voice dropped.
"He said once the Redbridge sale closes, none of this will matter."
Claire felt her pulse quicken.
"Did he say who owns Redbridge?"
Elaine shook her head.
"No."
Then she reached into her purse again.
"But he forgot I still have access to the family office copier."
She handed Claire a page printed the previous evening.
At the top was a Redbridge wire instruction.
At the bottom was the receiving account.
Claire recognized the bank.
Rachel recognized the routing format.
Lucas recognized the account nickname.
His face went pale.
"That's impossible."
Claire looked at him.
"What?"
Lucas pointed at the beneficiary line.
RED BRIDGE ACQUISITION RESERVE - MERCER PRIVATE CLIENT SERVICES.
Claire's stomach dropped.
"Mercer?"
Lucas shook his head.
May you like
"That account belonged to my father."
