Chapter 8 - The False Confession.

Henry answered Claire's call as if he had been waiting for it.
"Where are you?"
Claire stood in her mother's old office at Donovan House.
"Why were you here this morning?"
Silence.
Then Henry sighed.
"I came to retrieve personal records."
"From the basement?"
"Yes."
"Did you remove three pages from Thomas Mercer's ledger?"
Another pause.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Claire closed her eyes.
It was not proof.
But it was the first time she heard her father lie and recognized the sound immediately.
"Come here," she said.
"Now."
"Claire, I am in the middle of—"
"If you still think you have any right to call me your daughter, come here."
She ended the call.
Henry arrived twenty-eight minutes later.
He walked into the office and stopped when he saw Elaine, Ava, Lucas, and Rachel.
"This looks like a tribunal."
Ava crossed her arms.
"You always did like dramatic entrances."
Henry ignored her.
Claire placed the blue ledger on the desk.
"Explain it."
Henry glanced at the cover.
His face barely moved.
"Thomas kept obsessive notes."
"He recorded millions in trustee withdrawals."
"He misunderstood temporary financing."
"Mom requested an independent audit."
Henry's jaw tightened.
"Your mother was sick and under enormous stress."
Claire felt anger surge.
"Do not use her absence to make her unreliable."
Henry looked at her.
For a second, hurt crossed his face.
Then it vanished.
"You don't know what those years were like."
"Then tell me."
Henry looked at Lucas.
"Not with him here."
"He is my husband."
The words came out before Claire intended them.
Everyone noticed.
Lucas looked away.
Claire hated the strange legal truth of the sentence.
Henry laughed quietly.
"Yesterday you announced to three hundred people that he was a criminal."
"Today I learned somebody edited the recording."
Henry's eyes moved to Ava.
"Of course she told you that."
Ava stepped forward.
"I have the full file."
"And who authenticated it?"
Rachel cut in.
"We will."
Henry looked at her.
"You are making a serious mistake."
Rachel did not flinch.
"I made one serious mistake already."
"Which was?"
"Trusting your office to manage Clara Donovan's sealed materials after her death."
Claire's mother's name landed heavily in the room.
Henry's expression changed.
Rachel continued.
"Thomas Mercer's ledger references a protective amendment."
Henry looked at the ledger again.
"There was no valid amendment."
Claire caught the wording.
"You knew about it."
Henry said nothing.
"You knew."
"Your mother signed many drafts."
"Where are the missing pages?"
"I don't know."
Lucas stepped closer.
"Then explain Redbridge."
Henry's eyes hardened.
"You first."
Lucas nodded as if he had expected this moment.
"Fine."
He took a document from his backpack and placed it on the desk.
"I formed Northstar."
"We know," Claire said.
Lucas looked at her.
"Not all of it."
He turned the document around.
It was a confession drafted by his attorney.
Claire read the first paragraph.
Lucas admitted creating Northstar Holdings, moving $2.4 million from a company reserve account, and signing Claire's name without authorization.
The statement also said no one else had directed him.
Claire looked up sharply.
"What is this?"
"A way to stop Henry from freezing your control."
Henry laughed.
"By confessing to fraud?"
Lucas ignored him.
"If the court sees the disputed actions were mine alone and happened before the wedding, Henry loses his argument that the marriage itself was part of a joint scheme."
Rachel shook her head.
"It also exposes you to serious civil claims."
"I know."
Claire pushed the paper back.
"No."
Lucas looked at her.
"Claire."
"You do not get to decide which sacrifice I owe you."
"I'm not asking you to owe me anything."
"You forged my name."
"Yes."
"You hid my sister from me."
"Yes."
"You kept me ignorant of a threat to my own company."
"Yes."
Claire's voice broke despite her effort to keep it steady.
"And now you want to destroy yourself in a way that conveniently makes you look noble."
Lucas flinched.
"That's not why."
"Then why?"
He looked at Henry.
"Because tomorrow morning is the deadline."
Henry's eyes narrowed.
"For what?"
Lucas looked surprised.
"You really didn't tell her?"
Claire's patience snapped.
"Tell me what?"
Lucas reached into his bag again and removed an email printout.
The subject line read RESTRICTED ASSET TRANSFER - REDBRIDGE.
The document stated that if the Donovan House sale failed to close by nine a.m. Monday, the buyer could trigger a penalty against Donovan Group's revolving credit facility.
The amount was twelve million dollars.
Claire stared at Henry.
"You signed a twelve-million-dollar penalty?"
Henry spoke quietly.
"It was leverage to secure a premium sale price."
Ava laughed in disbelief.
"You bet the company on selling Mom's building."
"I was protecting the company."
"From what?"
Henry looked at the blue ledger.
"From the damage Thomas caused."
Lucas's face went blank.
"My father?"
Henry nodded.
"Thomas Mercer created Redbridge."
Elaine stood abruptly.
"That's a lie."
Henry turned to her.
"You know it isn't."
"Thomas investigated Redbridge."
"Thomas used Redbridge."
Henry opened his briefcase and removed three folded photocopies.
Claire recognized the jagged inner edges immediately.
The missing ledger pages.
"You took them," Claire said.
Henry did not deny it.
He laid them on the desk.
Each page showed payments approved by Thomas Mercer.
The largest was $3.8 million to Redbridge Consulting.
Beside one entry Thomas had written only his own initials.
Lucas stared at the pages.
"No."
Henry's voice softened.
"Your father stole from us."
Elaine shook her head violently.
"No."
"He tried to cover it."
"No."
"And when Clara discovered the discrepancy, Thomas convinced her I was responsible."
Claire felt dizzy.
Every new answer created two new lies.
Lucas picked up one of the pages.
His hands were trembling.
"Why would Dad write his own initials beside theft?"
Henry gave a sad smile.
"Guilt does strange things."
Ava stepped toward the copier in the corner.
"So does forgery."
Everyone looked at her.
She held one page under the light.
"These are copies."
Henry frowned.
"Obviously."
"No."
Ava pointed to the lower margin.
"The ledger paper has a watermark."
She held up the bound blue ledger.
"These pages don't."
Rachel took the photocopy.
"A copy wouldn't show texture."
Ava shook her head.
"I'm not talking about texture."
She pointed to the printed image.
"The original pages show a faint diagonal line because Thomas always wrote across the watermark."
She compared another page.
"These margins are too clean."
Lucas stared at Henry.
Ava looked at Claire.
"These pages weren't cut from that ledger."
Henry's face finally changed.
Only for a second.
But Claire saw fear.
