Chapter 14 - The Wedding Photograph.

Ava sat in the library at Donovan House with her hands folded tightly in her lap.

For once, she did not defend herself immediately.

Claire stood across from her.

"Start at the beginning."

Ava nodded.

"Martin contacted me last summer."

"Why you?"

"Because he thought you were too close to Dad."

The answer hurt because it was probably true.

Ava continued.

"He showed me part of Mom's audit and asked me to trace newer versions of the same transfer pattern."

"So your freelance work wasn't random."

"No."

"And when Dad hired you to watch Lucas?"

"I took the job because it gave me access."

Claire laughed without humor.

"Everybody was spying on everybody."

Martin looked ashamed.

"That was my mistake."

Claire turned on him.

"You had fifteen years to tell me."

"I promised Clara I would wait until the trust was ready to transfer."

"She died."

"And you were fourteen."

"I haven't been fourteen for a long time."

Martin lowered his eyes.

Claire looked back at Ava.

"Why did you sign the audit nine months ago?"

"To acknowledge I had seen it."

"Why didn't you tell me then?"

Ava's voice broke.

"Because Dad threatened to cut you out of the company if I brought you in before we had proof."

Claire stared at her.

"He couldn't legally do that."

"I know that now."

"You believed him?"

"You did too."

That sentence silenced Claire.

Ava wiped her face angrily.

"We both spent years believing Dad when he said ownership and control were the same thing."

Claire looked down.

Ava was right.

Henry had not only controlled the trust.

He had controlled what his daughters believed the trust could do.

Lucas stood near the window and said nothing.

Claire noticed he was finally learning when silence was more respectful than explanation.

A security officer entered the library carrying a camera bag.

"Ms. Donovan, someone is at the front desk asking for you."

"Who?"

"Your wedding photographer."

Claire almost laughed at the absurdity.

"Now?"

Ten minutes later, Jenna's friend Marisol Vega entered the library.

She had photographed Claire's ceremony and reception from noon until the moment the bride removed her ring.

Marisol looked uncomfortable.

"I saw the news."

Claire rubbed her forehead.

"I'm sorry you had to."

"That's not why I'm here."

Marisol opened her laptop.

"I was backing up the wedding files and noticed something."

Claire's stomach tightened automatically.

No image from that weekend seemed capable of bringing good news.

Marisol loaded a sequence of photographs taken in the hallway outside the bridal suite around nine in the morning.

In the first, a hotel attendant carried flowers.

In the second, Elaine stood near the elevator holding the cream-colored envelope.

That matched her confession.

In the third, Henry stepped out of the service corridor.

Claire leaned closer.

In the fourth, Henry spoke to Elaine.

In the fifth, Elaine handed him the envelope.

Claire froze.

"She said Henry gave it to her."

Lucas frowned.

"Maybe she was returning it."

Marisol clicked the next image.

Henry opened the envelope.

The next photograph showed him removing the papers.

The next showed him taking something from his jacket.

A small flash drive.

Claire's pulse quickened.

Henry replaced the flash drive inside the envelope.

Then he handed the envelope back to Elaine.

Marisol clicked again.

Elaine walked toward the bridal suite.

Claire stared at the screen.

"He swapped the drive."

Ava whispered, "The edited audio."

Lucas leaned closer.

"Maybe."

Marisol opened another photo taken at higher resolution.

The flash drive in Henry's hand was black.

The one Claire received had been silver.

"No," Lucas said.

"He didn't swap it."

Claire looked at him.

"What?"

Lucas pointed.

"The silver drive was already in the envelope."

Marisol enlarged the image.

A corner of a silver drive was visible between the papers.

Henry had added a second black drive.

Claire felt confused.

"But there was only one drive when I opened it."

Marisol clicked the final frame.

Elaine stood alone near the bridal suite door.

She had the envelope open.

Her hand was inside.

Then the sequence ended.

Everyone turned toward Lucas.

"Your mother took one of the drives out," Ava said.

Lucas looked grim.

"Looks like it."

Claire called Elaine.

No answer.

Lucas called.

No answer.

They drove to Elaine's townhouse.

The front door was unlocked.

Nothing inside appeared disturbed.

Her purse sat on the kitchen counter.

Her phone rested beside it.

Claire's heart started pounding.

Then they heard movement upstairs.

Lucas took the steps two at a time.

They found Elaine in the attic surrounded by boxes.

She was not hurt.

She was tearing through Thomas's papers.

Lucas stopped in the doorway.

"Mom."

Elaine looked up.

"I found it."

She held a black flash drive.

Claire stared.

"Was that in the wedding envelope?"

Elaine nodded.

"Henry put it there."

"Why did you remove it?"

"Because he told me not to let you hear it unless the wedding continued."

Claire felt sick.

"What does that mean?"

Elaine looked at Lucas.

"I thought it was another recording proving he was using you."

"Did you listen?" Lucas asked.

"No."

"Why not?"

Elaine's eyes filled.

"Because after Claire stopped the wedding, Henry texted me one word."

She showed them an old screenshot.

DESTROY.

Elaine continued.

"I couldn't."

Claire held out her hand.

"Give it to me."

Lucas said quietly, "Maybe we should have it copied first."

Claire looked at him.

He immediately stepped back.

"Your choice."

That mattered.

Claire took the drive.

They connected it to an offline laptop.

There was one video file.

The date was March seventeenth.

The camera angle showed a private meeting room at Donovan House.

Henry sat at the table.

Lucas sat across from him.

Ava was not there yet.

Henry's recorded voice filled the attic.

"You keep Claire focused on the wedding."

Lucas answered, "No."

Henry leaned forward.

"You were hired to manage risk."

"Not anymore."

"Then understand the risk."

Henry slid a document across the table.

"If she learns about Redbridge before the license is signed, I will make sure Ava takes the fall for every transfer she touched."

Claire looked at her sister.

Ava went pale.

On the video, Lucas said, "You would destroy her sister to keep the trust?"

Henry answered calmly.

"I would protect what Clara built."

Lucas laughed.

"By selling it?"

Henry's face hardened.

"By surviving."

The video continued for another minute.

Then Henry said the sentence that changed everything.

"You get Claire to the altar, or Ava goes down with me."

Claire stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

Her father's threat was finally real.

Recorded.

Unedited.

Impossible to explain away.

Then Ava whispered, "Play the last ten seconds."

Claire did.

Henry stood to leave.

Before he reached the door, Lucas spoke.

"And when this is over, you tell her how we met."

Henry turned.

"If you still think she'll love you after that, you're dumber than your father was."
