Chapter 17 - The First Day of Their Marriage.

Claire asked everyone else to leave the library.

Ava hesitated.

Rachel gave her a look and guided her out.

Elaine kissed Lucas's cheek before leaving.

He did not pull away, but he did not return the gesture.

When the door closed, Claire and Lucas were alone inside Donovan House.

It was almost three in the morning.

Their legal marriage was less than three days old.

Their actual relationship felt older than both of them.

Claire sat on the edge of the long table.

"Tell me everything you should have told me before the wedding."

Lucas nodded.

"Henry hired me almost three and a half years ago."

"To investigate me."

"To assess whether you were preparing to challenge his control."

"How did you approach me?"

Lucas looked ashamed.

"The coffee shop wasn't an accident."

Claire already knew, but hearing it still hurt.

"Did he tell you what to say?"

"No."

"Did he tell you what I liked?"

"He gave me a profile."

Claire laughed quietly.

"A profile."

"I never used most of it."

"Most?"

Lucas closed his eyes.

"He told me you loved old buildings."

Claire remembered their first conversation.

Lucas had been reading a book about preservation architecture.

She had commented on it.

A perfect opening.

Her stomach twisted.

"Was the book real?"

"Yes."

"Did you actually care about architecture?"

"Yes."

"Did you know I would notice it?"

"Yes."

Claire looked away.

"Continue."

Lucas said Henry paid him to report on Claire's meetings, her interest in trust documents, and whether she intended to remove Henry as trustee after marriage or her thirtieth birthday.

Lucas filed two reports.

Then he stopped.

"Why?"

"Because I liked you."

Claire gave him a hard look.

"That's not enough."

"Because I realized Henry wasn't afraid you would hurt the company."

Lucas took a breath.

"He was afraid you would ask for records."

"And you still kept dating me."

"Yes."

"Without telling me why we met."

"Yes."

"For three years."

"Yes."

Claire stood.

"You understand why I don't know which memories are mine anymore."

Lucas's face broke slightly.

"I do."

"No, you understand the sentence."

She pressed one hand to her chest.

"I have to go backward through my entire relationship and ask whether each moment happened because you loved me or because my father handed you a file."

Lucas did not defend himself.

Claire continued.

"Did you propose because of the trust transfer?"

"No."

"Did you choose Donovan House because of the trust?"

"No."

"Did you push to sign the license immediately because of the trust?"

Lucas hesitated.

"Yes."

Claire laughed through tears.

"There it is."

"I was afraid Henry would stop the filing."

"So you used our marriage as a legal weapon without telling me."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me the week before?"

"Because Henry threatened Ava."

"You could have told me that too."

"I thought you would confront him."

"Maybe I would have."

"And I thought he would move the sale."

Claire wiped her face.

"You keep explaining the logic as if good logic makes it consent."

Lucas went still.

The sentence landed.

"You're right."

Claire looked at him.

"I know."

"I mean it."

"I know you do."

Lucas sat down.

"I was trying so hard to be different from Henry that I became another man making choices for you."

Claire's anger softened only enough to hurt more.

"Yes."

They sat in silence.

Finally Claire asked, "Did you send the note under my hotel door after the reception?"

Lucas shook his head.

"No."

"Did you send the envelope?"

"No."

"Did you know Henry was planning it?"

"Not the way it happened."

Lucas reached into his wallet and removed a folded courier receipt.

"I arranged my own package."

Claire stared at him.

"What package?"

"A full copy of the Northstar records, Ava's unedited audio, and a letter explaining everything."

"When?"

"The morning of the wedding."

Claire's heart accelerated.

"Where is it?"

"It was supposed to be delivered to your bridal suite at eight thirty."

"It never arrived."

"I know."

He handed her the receipt.

The package had been marked DELIVERED TO FAMILY REPRESENTATIVE.

Claire looked at the signature.

H. DONOVAN.

Her father had intercepted it.

Lucas continued.

"I panicked when I saw you with the microphone because I realized whatever you received wasn't mine."

Claire remembered his face during the reception.

The confusion.

The fear.

Then the urgency when she announced the recording.

For the first time, the sequence fit.

"Why didn't you stop me before I played it?"

"I tried."

"You could have shouted the truth."

Lucas looked at her.

"Would you have believed me?"

Claire opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Probably not.

That did not make his secrecy acceptable.

It only made the tragedy more complete.

"Did you love me before you quit working for my father?"

Lucas answered immediately.

"Yes."

"How do I know?"

"You don't."

Claire stared at him.

He continued.

"That's the part I broke."

No speech could repair that.

No evidence could authenticate love.

Lucas removed his wedding ring and placed it on the table.

Claire's chest tightened.

"What are you doing?"

"Giving you the choice I should have given you before the altar."

"We're already married."

"Rachel can file for annulment based on fraud if that's what you want."

Claire looked at the ring.

Three days earlier, she had placed her own ring beside a wedding cake because she thought Lucas had stolen money and betrayed her with another woman.

Now she knew he had not done those things in the way she believed.

She also knew he had betrayed her in a quieter, older way.

Claire picked up his ring.

Then she placed it back in his palm.

"Don't make another grand sacrifice."

Lucas closed his fingers around it.

"Then what do I do?"

Claire looked at him.

"Nothing."

He frowned.

"Nothing?"

"For once, yes."

She walked toward the door.
