Chapter 3 - The First Lie.

Claire did not sleep.
At five thirty in the morning, the wedding reception hall had already been cleared of most flowers, but the hotel still smelled faintly of roses and champagne.
She changed into black pants and one of Jenna's sweaters because she could not stand the sight of white anymore.
The wedding dress remained in a heap across the armchair.
Claire left the ring beside it.
Henry was waiting in the private breakfast room downstairs.
He had removed his tie, but otherwise he looked exactly as he had during the reception.
Controlled.
Tidy.
Prepared.
"You should have called me," he said.
Claire closed the door.
"I did."
"No, I mean before you stood in front of three hundred people and detonated your life."
Claire stared at him.
"That's an interesting choice of words."
Henry's face softened.
"I'm angry because I love you."
"Were you at Donovan House on March seventeenth?"
The softness disappeared.
"Where did you get that date?"
"Were you there?"
Henry sat back.
"Yes."
Claire had expected another lie.
His honesty unsettled her more.
"With Lucas?"
"Yes."
"And Elaine?"
Henry rubbed one hand over his face.
"Yes."
Claire leaned against the table because her knees suddenly felt weak.
"Why?"
"There was a financing issue."
"What financing issue?"
"A private one."
Claire laughed once.
"There it is again."
Henry's eyes narrowed.
"This is not a game, Claire."
"Then stop treating me like a child."
The door opened behind her.
Lucas stepped inside.
He looked as if he had aged five years overnight.
His tuxedo was gone.
He wore dark jeans, a white shirt, and the same exhausted expression Claire had seen when security walked him out.
Henry stood immediately.
"You are not welcome here."
"I wasn't talking to you."
Lucas looked at Claire.
"I asked Jenna to let me know where you were."
Claire felt betrayed by that too, though she knew it was irrational.
"You have two minutes."
Lucas nodded.
"The money is safe."
"You stole it."
"I moved it."
"Without telling me."
"Yes."
"That's called stealing when normal people do it."
Lucas accepted the blow without defending himself.
"Northstar Holdings is a reserve entity."
Henry cut in.
"Northstar Holdings is a shell company under your control."
Lucas turned.
"You know exactly why it was created."
Henry stepped around the table.
"I know you used my daughter's trust account to create it."
"Your daughter's trust account?"
Lucas's voice sharpened.
"Listen to yourself."
Claire raised one hand.
"Stop."
Both men did.
She pointed at Lucas.
"Who was the woman at the hotel?"
Lucas's jaw tightened.
"I can't tell you yet."
Claire felt something inside her turn cold.
"Then we're done."
"Claire."
"No."
"It wasn't an affair."
"Then say her name."
Lucas looked toward the closed door.
"I promised her I wouldn't."
"You promised me a lot of things too."
He flinched.
That gave Claire no satisfaction.
"Was she involved with Northstar?" Claire asked.
"Yes."
Henry slammed his palm against the table.
"Enough."
Claire turned on him.
"Why are you so desperate for him to stop talking?"
Henry looked offended.
"Because he is manipulating you."
"Maybe."
Claire glanced at Lucas.
"But you're hiding something too."
Henry exhaled slowly.
"I was trying to protect you from this exact mess."
Lucas shook his head.
"No, you were trying to control the timing."
"Get out."
"Ask him about the reserve shortfall."
Henry's face changed.
Claire saw it.
Lucas saw that she saw it.
"What reserve shortfall?" Claire asked.
Henry ignored the question.
"Lucas moved millions of dollars without authorization."
"What reserve shortfall?"
Henry looked at his daughter for several seconds.
"There isn't one."
Lucas took his phone from his pocket.
Henry moved instantly.
"Do not show her anything from company systems."
Lucas gave him a bitter smile.
"That sounded almost like fear."
He unlocked the phone and placed it on the table in front of Claire.
The screen showed a spreadsheet.
Rows of numbers ran beneath project names Claire recognized.
Renovation funds.
Payroll reserves.
Property tax accounts.
Insurance escrows.
The final column was red.
Claire looked at the total.
$8,140,000.
"What is this?"
"Money that should have been in Donovan Group reserves three months ago."
Claire looked at Henry.
"Is this real?"
"It's incomplete data."
Lucas laughed.
"That's the line you used in March."
Henry reached for the phone.
Claire grabbed it first.
The room went very still.
"Don't," she said.
It was the first time in her life she had used that tone with her father.
Henry withdrew his hand.
Lucas pointed at the spreadsheet.
"I moved the two point four because it was the only liquid reserve I could isolate before the next scheduled draw."
"Isolate from who?"
Lucas's eyes flicked toward Henry.
Claire's father shook his head.
"Think about what he is doing, Claire."
Lucas leaned forward.
"Think about what he isn't answering."
Claire closed the spreadsheet.
"Who authorized Northstar?"
Lucas looked at her.
"You did."
Claire's stomach dropped.
"I did not."
"Your signature is on the formation documents."
"I never signed anything."
"I know."
That answer chilled her more than a denial.
"Then why is my signature there?"
Lucas's face tightened.
"Because I put it there."
Henry stepped back as if the confession had physically struck him.
Claire stared at Lucas.
"You forged my signature?"
"Yes."
She slapped him.
The sound cracked across the breakfast room.
Lucas did not move.
Claire's palm burned.
"Do not ever tell me you were protecting me while saying that."
"You're right."
"Get out."
"Claire, I need you to understand why."
"Get out."
Lucas nodded once.
He walked to the door, then stopped.
"Before you let Henry call the police, check your trust agreement."
Henry's eyes flashed.
"Don't listen to him."
Lucas looked at Claire.
"Section nine."
Then he left.
Henry waited until the door closed.
"I am calling our attorneys."
Claire looked down at Lucas's abandoned phone, which was still on the table.
A notification appeared across the screen.
It was a message from a contact saved only as A.
HE TOLD HER ABOUT THE FORGED SIGNATURE, DIDN'T HE?
A second message arrived immediately.
DON'T LET HENRY SEE THIS.
Claire looked up.
