Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence

The pain radiated through Emma’s spine as the cold marble floor pressed unforgivingly against her bruised skin.

She could feel a warm trail of blood slowly sliding down her forehead and dripping onto her eyelashes.

Her trembling hands remained fiercely clamped over her swollen abdomen, desperate to protect the tiny life growing inside her.

Above her, the magnificent crystal chandelier cast a blinding, mocking glow over the grand foyer of the Sterling estate.

Chloe, the woman in the nauseating emerald green dress, stood halfway up the stairs with a pale, twisted expression.

The arrogant smirk that had decorated Chloe’s face just moments ago was entirely gone.

It was replaced by a creeping dread as the reality of Emma’s phone call began to set in.

"What did you just do?" Chloe whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched the mahogany banister.

Emma did not answer, focusing instead on the steady, rhythmic breathing exercises she had learned in her prenatal classes.

Every inhale brought a sharp stab of agony to her ribs, but she refused to give her abusers the satisfaction of hearing her scream again.

Julian, Emma’s husband, finally stepped out from the shadows of the parlor, his face an unreadable mask of confusion and cowardice.

He looked at his bleeding wife on the floor, then up at his sister, paralyzed by his lifelong habit of avoiding conflict.

"Emma, who did you call?" Julian demanded, taking a hesitant step forward but keeping a safe distance from the blood on the pristine white tiles.

"I called the end of this family," Emma gasped out, her voice barely above a whisper but laced with pure venom.

Eleanor, the matriarch of the Sterling family, adjusted her diamond necklace nervously and glared at the terrified maid.

"Maria, go fetch the estate doctor immediately and clean up this mess before the neighbors see anything," Eleanor commanded with icy detachment.

But Maria did not move an inch.

The young maid stood frozen against the wall, her wide eyes locked on the heavy oak front doors.

From the distance, the faint, high-pitched wail of police sirens began to slice through the quiet night air of the wealthy neighborhood.

The sound grew louder and more aggressive with every passing second.

Chloe let out a sudden, frantic sob and rushed down the remaining stairs to grab Julian’s arm.

"Julian, you have to tell them she attacked me first!" Chloe cried out, her manicured nails digging into his expensive suit jacket.

"She is crazy, she threw herself down the stairs to frame me!"

Before Julian could utter a single pathetic word of comfort to his sister, heavy fists began pounding on the grand front doors.

"Police Department, open up immediately!" a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the other side of the heavy wood.

Emma allowed a small, painful smile to touch her lips as she closed her eyes.

Detective Vance had arrived exactly on time.
