Chapter 8 - The Legal Execution

Three days had passed since the incident at the mansion, and the morning sun was streaming brightly into Emma’s hospital room.

She was sitting up in bed, dressed in a comfortable cotton robe, eating a piece of dry toast when a sharp knock echoed from the door.

A tall, striking woman in a tailored burgundy power suit walked into the room, exuding an aura of absolute confidence and control.

"Emma Sterling, I presume?" the woman asked, though she clearly already knew the answer as she set a sleek leather briefcase on the visitor's chair.

"Call me Emma Hayes, I am officially done with the Sterling name," Emma replied, a small smile playing on her lips.

"Perfect, I am Olivia Reed, and I am here to help you legally erase that name from your life forever," the lawyer said, extending a firm hand.

Olivia opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents bound in blue paper.

"I have spent the last seventy-two hours drafting the most airtight, aggressive divorce petition this city has ever seen," Olivia stated, handing Emma a fancy silver pen.

"We are filing for sole legal and physical custody of your child, with zero visitation rights for Julian due to his complicity in a violent crime."

Emma looked down at the papers, her heart pounding with a mixture of anxiety and overwhelming relief.

"Will Julian fight this?" Emma asked, tracing the line where her signature would seal his fate.

"He can try, but he is currently sleeping on a cot in a cheap motel because the federal government seized all of his bank accounts yesterday morning," Olivia laughed coldly.

"Furthermore, we are invoking the 'morality and criminal conduct' clause in the prenuptial agreement that Arthur forced you to sign five years ago."

Emma looked up, genuinely surprised, as she had never actually read the complicated seventy-page document her father-in-law had thrust upon her before the wedding.

"Arthur included a clause stating that if either party is convicted of a felony or brings severe public disgrace to the family, they forfeit their share of the marital assets," Olivia explained.

"He intended to use it against you if you ever stepped out of line, but since Julian is now a named co-conspirator in federal tax fraud, the clause backfired beautifully."

Emma did not hesitate for another second.

She pressed the silver pen to the paper and signed her maiden name with bold, sweeping strokes on every single page.

That afternoon, Olivia Reed walked directly into the cheap motel lobby where Julian was desperately trying to negotiate a room extension.

She slapped the thick stack of divorce papers onto the reception desk, right over his trembling hands.

"Julian Sterling, you have been served," Olivia announced loudly, making sure the few people in the lobby heard her clearly.

"You have thirty days to respond, though I highly recommend you spend that time finding a good criminal defense attorney instead."

Julian stared at the papers in shock, watching the elegant lawyer turn on her designer heels and walk out the door without a backward glance.

He was completely broken, completely isolated, and entirely responsible for his own miserable destruction.
