Chapter 10 - The Federal Sweep

The sun had barely risen over the wealthy suburbs when a convoy of six black tactical vehicles rolled quietly onto the Sterling estate.
Dozens of federal agents clad in heavy tactical gear swarmed the pristine, manicured lawns, their boots crushing the expensive imported orchids.
Eleanor Sterling was sitting in the grand dining room, sipping her morning tea and pretending that her life was not actively disintegrating around her.
She still believed that her husband's powerful political connections would miraculously clear up this messy misunderstanding by the end of the week.
Her delusions were violently shattered when the massive oak front doors were breached with a deafening crash.
"FBI, nobody move!" a lead agent shouted, flooding the foyer with heavily armed personnel.
Eleanor dropped her antique teacup, watching it shatter into a hundred pieces on the hardwood floor as she screamed in terror.
"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor demanded, her voice shrill and trembling as two agents quickly flanked her dining chair.
"We have a federal warrant to search this property for hidden assets and contraband," the lead agent declared, holding up a legally signed piece of paper.
Eleanor’s face instantly lost all of its color, turning a sickly shade of ash gray.
"You will find nothing here, we are a respectable family!" she lied, desperately trying to maintain her aristocratic posture.
The agent ignored her protests and raised his radio to his mouth, issuing a swift command to his team.
"Team Bravo, proceed directly to the basement wine cellar and check the floorboards under the 1990 vintage racks," the agent instructed clearly.
Eleanor physically collapsed back into her chair, clutching her chest as a massive panic attack took hold of her rapidly beating heart.
She knew instantly that someone had betrayed her deeply held secret.
Within ten minutes, the agents hauled a massive, heavy steel lockbox up the stairs and broke the padlock with a pair of industrial bolt cutters.
The lid popped open to reveal millions of dollars in untraceable bearer bonds, stacks of foreign currency, and a velvet bag overflowing with conflict diamonds.
"Eleanor Sterling, you are under arrest for the concealment of federal assets, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit money laundering," the agent announced, pulling out a pair of handcuffs.
The proud matriarch was dragged out of her own home in her silk pajamas, weeping uncontrollably as the cold steel cut into her delicate wrists.
Miles away, Emma lay comfortably on her own plush sofa in a beautiful, secure apartment that Olivia Reed had arranged for her.
She was watching the morning news on a large flat-screen television, gently stroking her pregnant belly.
Live helicopter footage showed the federal agents carrying boxes of evidence out of the Sterling mansion, with yellow police tape completely wrapping the grand front gates.
The physical fortress of her former abusers was being dismantled piece by piece, broadcast for the entire world to witness.

Emma took a deep, calming breath and smiled as the news anchor announced that the entire Sterling family had been denied bail.
The nightmare was finally over, and she was entirely ready to welcome her baby into a world completely free of monsters.
