Chapter 18 - The Predator's Mistake

The highly exclusive, ridiculously expensive Michelin-star restaurant in downtown Los Angeles was nearly empty when Victor Thorne walked through the front doors.
Emma had personally rented out the entire dining room for the evening, ensuring that their dangerous confrontation would happen without any civilian casualties.
She sat elegantly at a corner table, dressed in a sharp, pristine white power suit that made her look like an avenging angel of justice.
Victor walked over with an arrogant, infuriating swagger, casually pulling out a chair and sitting down directly across from her.
"I must admit, Ms. Hayes, I am highly impressed by your courage, though I seriously question your basic intelligence," Victor sneered, pouring himself a glass of expensive red wine.
"You should have just mailed the encryption key to my office, packed up your adorable little daughter, and fled the country while you still had the chance."
Emma casually picked up her heavy crystal water glass, taking a slow, delicate sip while maintaining absolute, unblinking eye contact with the dangerous criminal.
"You have made a very serious miscalculation, Mr. Thorne," Emma stated calmly, her voice completely devoid of any emotion.
"You looked at me and saw the weak, terrified victim who was bullied by the Sterling family, but that woman died on a marble staircase four years ago."
Victor laughed darkly, leaning across the table to invade her personal space with his suffocating, menacing presence.
"Do not try to play tough with me, little girl, because I am not a cowardly fool like Arthur Sterling," Victor threatened, his gray eyes flashing with cruel violence.
"If you do not hand over the digital ledger containing my fifty million dollars by midnight, I will ensure that your precious foundation burns to the ground with you inside it."
Emma reached into her white designer handbag and slowly pulled out the antique silver key he had sent her, placing it gently onto the white linen tablecloth.
"This key is completely useless to me, Victor, because there is absolutely no digital ledger, and there is no hidden cryptocurrency," Emma revealed softly.
Victor’s cruel smile instantly vanished, replaced by a dangerous, terrifying scowl as he forcefully slammed his large fist against the table.
"Do not lie to me, you pathetic little gold-digger!" Victor roared, completely losing his carefully crafted composure.
"Arthur specifically told me that he hid the access codes in a secure, digital trust fund under your name before the federal agents raided his mansion!"
Emma smiled brightly, feeling a massive wave of triumph wash over her as the arrogant criminal finally stepped directly into her perfectly laid trap.
"Thank you, Victor, that was exactly the confession I needed to hear," Emma whispered, pressing a small, hidden button underneath the edge of the dining table.
Suddenly, the heavy velvet curtains at the back of the restaurant were aggressively pulled open, revealing a dozen heavily armed federal agents.
David Vance stepped out from the kitchen, holding a highly advanced directional microphone that had just recorded every single word of Victor’s violent threat.
"Victor Thorne, you are under arrest for federal extortion, terroristic threats, and conspiracy to commit international money laundering," Vance announced, pulling out his handcuffs.
Victor leaped out of his chair in a blind panic, trying to run toward the front exit, but he was instantly tackled to the ground by four massive federal agents.

Emma calmly stood up from the table, smoothing out the invisible wrinkles in her pristine white suit as she looked down at the pathetic, struggling man.
"You tried to hunt a terrified little bird, Victor, but you accidentally walked into the den of a very angry lioness," Emma said softly, turning her back on him completely.
