Chapter 12 - The Final Betrayal

The legal deposition took place in a sterile, glass-walled conference room on the fortieth floor of Olivia Reed’s prestigious law firm.

Emma sat perfectly straight in a plush leather chair, wearing a tailored navy blue dress that radiated quiet, undeniable power.

Across the wide mahogany table sat Julian, looking completely unrecognizable from the wealthy, arrogant man she had once married.

His expensive designer suit hung loosely on his shrinking frame, heavily wrinkled and carrying the faint, sour smell of cheap alcohol.

Julian had dark, heavy bags under his bloodshot eyes, and his hands trembled violently as he nervously clutched a styrofoam cup of water.

He had been forced to hire a discount, strip-mall attorney who looked terrified just sitting in the same room as Olivia Reed.

"Let the record show that we are here to finalize the terms of the divorce between Emma Hayes and Julian Sterling," Olivia announced clearly, turning on a digital audio recorder.

"My client is demanding full legal and physical custody of the unborn child, with absolute termination of Mr. Sterling's parental rights."

Julian let out a pathetic, desperate sob, reaching his shaking hands across the polished wooden table toward his wife.

"Emma, please, you cannot take my child away from me," Julian begged, tears streaming down his pale, unshaven face.

"I lost my parents, my sister, my money, and my home; you are the only family I have left in this world!"

Emma did not flinch, nor did she offer him a single ounce of the pity he was so desperately trying to extract from her.

"You lost your family because they are violent criminals, Julian, and you lost your money because it was entirely stolen to begin with," Emma replied in a voice as cold as absolute zero.

"And when your sister pushed me down those stairs to murder this baby, you did not ask if we were alive; you asked me to protect your public image."

Julian lowered his head in utter shame, knowing deep down that her brutal assessment of his character was entirely accurate.

"Furthermore, due to the morality clause in your own prenuptial agreement, Mr. Sterling forfeits any claim to Ms. Hayes's personal trust fund," Olivia added with a razor-sharp smile.

"Sign the papers, Julian, or we will take this to a public trial and let a jury decide how pathetic you truly are."

Julian’s cheap lawyer leaned over, frantically whispering in his ear to just take the deal before things got even worse.

With a defeated, shuddering breath, Julian picked up the pen and signed away the last remaining piece of his shattered life.

Emma watched him sign the documents, feeling the heavy, suffocating chains of her marriage finally break and fall away forever.
