Chapter 1 - The Door Opens

The front door opened slowly.
Daniel stood on the threshold in full Army camouflage, a dark duffel hanging from one shoulder and a look on his face I had never seen before.
He was not shouting.
That made him more frightening.
Behind him stood a military investigator named Captain Aaron Brooks, a woman in a dark federal-style suit, and Daniel’s commanding officer, Colonel James Whitmore.
My mother’s fingers immediately released my chin.
Daniel’s eyes moved from Gloria to Tiffany, then to Mark.
Finally, he looked at me.
His gaze stopped on the blood at the corner of my mouth.
Something hardened inside his expression.
“Who hit you?”
Nobody answered.
Daniel placed his duffel beside the door.
“I asked a question.”
Gloria recovered first.
She lifted her chin and forced a laugh.
“Daniel, don’t be ridiculous.”
“She became hysterical.”
“We were trying to calm her down.”
I stared at my mother.
Even now, she was lying.
Daniel looked at me again.
“Rachel?”
“My mother hit me.”
The room became still.
Gloria’s face changed.
“You ungrateful—”
“Stop.”
Daniel did not raise his voice.
He did not need to.
Captain Brooks stepped inside.
The woman beside him introduced herself as Special Agent Laura Chen with the Defense Criminal Investigative Service.
That was when Mark’s face lost its color.
He knew exactly what those words meant.
Tiffany looked toward the back hallway.
Agent Chen noticed.
“Please remain where you are.”
Tiffany froze.
Gloria stared at Daniel.
“You brought investigators into a family disagreement?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“This stopped being a family disagreement when money disappeared from my deployment account.”
Mark swallowed.
I watched his hand move toward his pocket.
Agent Chen noticed that too.
“Keep your hands visible, Mr. Bennett.”
Mark slowly lifted them.
Daniel stepped toward me.
He touched my cheek carefully, avoiding the swelling.
“You okay?”
“I will be.”
His eyes remained on the blood.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t here sooner.”
“You’re here now.”
For a moment, everything around us disappeared.
Then Gloria laughed again.
It was thin and nervous.
“This is absurd.”
“I’m your mother.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“No.”
“You’re Rachel’s mother.”
“And right now, you are standing inside Rachel’s house after assaulting her while trying to force her to surrender property.”
Gloria blinked.
Daniel continued.
“You people made one mistake.”
Mark tried to smile.
“And what mistake was that?”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“You thought Rachel was the one I needed to protect.”
He paused.
“She’s the reason you’re already caught.”
Tiffany’s eyes snapped toward me.
I wiped the last trace of blood from my lip.
For three months, I had waited for that moment.
The encrypted records.
The forged signatures.
The loan applications.
The charity transfers.
Every piece was documented.
I looked at the three people who had spent years calling me weak.
“You wanted me to sign papers tomorrow.”
I let the silence stretch.
“That won’t be happening.”
May you like
Agent Chen opened a folder.
“Actually, tomorrow is going to be much more interesting than they expected.”
