Chapter 14 - Seven Seconds

The feed returned seven seconds later.

It felt like seven minutes.

Eric was on the ground.

An agent had fired after Eric produced a handgun.

The bullet struck Eric in the shoulder.

Gloria was unharmed.

Agents secured the weapon and loaded Eric into an ambulance under guard.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

I realized I had been holding my breath.

Agent Chen received updates through her headset.

“Suspect stable.”

“Weapon recovered.”

“Recording intact.”

Recording intact.

Those two words mattered enormously.

Gloria’s conversation had captured Eric describing their agreement.

It also captured her denial.

That denial might help her.

But not enough.

She had still asked how much it would cost to ensure Daniel did not return.

She had still provided information.

She had still financed people connected to Eric.

Daniel sat beside me.

“I don’t know what to feel.”

“You don’t have to know yet.”

He rubbed his hands over his face.

“She hated you enough to risk me.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

Daniel frowned.

“She didn’t do this because she hated me.”

“Then why?”

“Because she believed she owned everyone.”

The realization hurt.

Gloria’s cruelty had never been personal in the way I once thought.

It was structural.

Anyone who resisted her became an enemy.

Me.

Daniel.

Even Mark and Tiffany when they became liabilities.

Control was the only relationship she understood.

After Eric’s arrest, investigators recovered his phone.

The device contained months of messages.

Most were deleted.

Forensic specialists restored them.

One exchange between Eric and Gloria stood out.

Eric:

Your daughter is harder than Mark said.

Gloria:

She always gives in eventually.

Eric:

Not this time.

Gloria:

Then make her afraid.

Another message came weeks later.

Eric:

Daniel complicates everything.

Gloria:

Only if he comes back early.

Those words ended any remaining doubt.

She knew.

She had known the entire time.

Mark entered a cooperation agreement.

Tiffany followed.

Both turned on Gloria.

Not because they became courageous.

Because consequences clarified their priorities.

They provided bank passwords, meeting dates, and recordings.

Tiffany admitted creating the fake vendors.

Mark admitted forging Daniel’s military information.

Then he revealed one final secret.

“There’s another account.”

Agent Chen stared at him.

“Where?”

“Cayman Islands.”

My professional instincts immediately sharpened.

“How much?”

Mark looked at me.

“I don’t know anymore.”

“What was the last balance?”

He hesitated.

“Two point four million.”

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Two point four million dollars?”

Mark nodded.

The room fell silent.

Gloria had claimed she was drowning in debt.

Yet somewhere offshore sat millions.

I understood instantly.

The debt had never been the whole motive.

She was not desperately trying to survive.

May you like

She was building an exit.

And she planned to leave the rest of us holding the crimes.
